Troubleshoot Brightspace Email and Notifications

Brightspace is configured to send email to the user’s @login.cuny.edu address. You may not be familiar with this as an email address, but it should forward email generated by Brightspace to the preferred email address listed in CUNY First. For a small group of people who have email addresses at multiple CUNY campuses, the CUNY First preferred email address is bypassed and email from your @login.cuny.edu address is instead sent to a different CUNY email address. Here are some steps to take if you are not sure if you are receiving Brightspace notifications and emails sent by students through Brightspace:

1. Check your Brightspace notification settings

Your Brightspace notification settings control what types of actions within Brightspace trigger email notifications, rather than in-app notifications. Check the notifications widget on your Brightspace homepage to review and change your notification settings. If you are not receiving copies of emails that you send to students, you may need to change your email settings. If you are not receiving the email notifications indicated in your settings, proceed to step 2.

2. Send a test email to your @login.cuny.edu address

If you receive your test email at your BMCC address (or the CUNY address where you expect to receive it), no additional troubleshooting is needed – you are receiving all emails generated by Brightspace.

3. Check your CUNY First preferred email address
  • Sign into CUNY First, click on the three dots at the upper right, and select My Preferences.

  • Select Campus Preferences from the menu on the left.

  • Click Edit Email Addresses. You will now see a screen where you can view your current email address(es) and add a new one if needed. Select your preferred email address. If you change your preferred email address, send yourself another test email as indicated in step 1.
4. Search for other CUNY email addresses

Log into Microsoft Office 365 at https://www.office.com/ using your CUNYfirst (@login.cuny.edu) username and CUNYfirst password. After signing in, you should see an icon in the upper-left showing a grid of nine dots. Click this to reveal available apps. If Outlook is listed among the apps, click on it and check to see if your mail is there.
