If you are using weighted totals, you will need to set up Categories to house the assignments within the weighted section. For example, Discussions, may be 25% of your overall grade and Discussion 1, Discussion 2, and Discussion 3 would be Items under that category.
This video and written instructions below will help you set up Categories and will show you how to use Bulk Edit features when using Weighted totals.
To create a new category:
- Go to Grades tab on the navibar and click the Manage Grades tab.
- Create a Category by clicking on the New button and selecting Category.

- If you are using a weighted grading system, include the weight (percentage of final grade)
- Decide how you would like the grade items in that category to be distributed. Items can be weighed evenly, with varying distributions and possibly drop a lowest grade. You can make those selections here.

- Be sure to click Save once you have made all the selections for your Category.
Once you have created your Grade Categories, you can move existing items into those categories or set up new items in categories.
