3.2 module – Estella Bruton

1; A Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) is an institution that helps maintain order and control in society through authority, laws, and consequences. Examples include the government, police, courts, military, and prisons. Althusser calls it “repressive” because these institutions have the power to enforce rules and punish people when those rules are broken. The word repressive refers to the use of authority and consequences to influence people’s behavior. For example, if someone breaks the law, the police can arrest them and the courts can punish them. People follow laws partly because they know there are consequences if they do not. This is why Althusser describes these institutions as repressive.

2; Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) are institutions that influence how people think, what they believe, and how they understand the world. Examples include schools, families, churches, media, and social media. Unlike Repressive State Apparatuses, they do not mainly use force. Instead, they shape people’s beliefs, values, and understanding of what is normal or acceptable.I think they work by influencing people through everyday experiences. Many of the ideas we have about success, work, family, and society come from the messages we receive from these institutions over time.

The main difference is that Repressive State Apparatuses use authority, laws, and punishment to maintain order, while Ideological State Apparatuses influence people’s beliefs, values, and ways of thinking. In my understanding, RSAs influence behavior through rules and consequences, while ISAs influence behavior by shaping how people see themselves and the world around them. One relies more on authority and enforcement, while the other relies more on ideas and beliefs.

One example of ideology is social media content from your peers, celebrities, influencers, or people you are inspired by. A lot of what we see online can shape how we think about success, money, relationships, appearance, and life in general. Sometimes we do not even realize how much those messages influence us. I would consider this an example of an Ideological State Apparatus because it influences the way people think and view the world rather than controlling them through force or punishment. A current example of this is New York City suing Meta over concerns about the effects social media may have on children’s mental health. To me, this shows how powerful social media can be in shaping beliefs, behaviors, and how people see themselves. It is not using force or punishment, but it can strongly influence the way people think and interact with the world around them.

Estella Bruton – Ideology

To me, ideology is a set of values, ideas, and beliefs that shape how we perceive the world and how we think the world works. Everyone’s ideology can be different, even though some people may share similar beliefs. It influences how we think about family, success, government, money, and almost anything that affects our lives. I believe ideology shapes the way we understand the world around us, and because of that, it influences the choices we make and the opinions we form. A lot of what we believe comes from our experiences, environment, upbringing, and the people around us, which is why no two people see the world exactly the same way.

2: The biggest difference I see between conservatives and liberals is how they view the role of government in society. Conservatives tend to believe that government should have limits and that people should have more personal responsibility and freedom. They often see government as something that can become too controlling if it grows too large. In my understanding, conservatives believe government is there to create rules and maintain order, but it should not be heavily involved in every aspect of people’s lives or personal decisions.Liberals, on the other hand, tend to believe government should play a bigger role in helping people and addressing social and economic problems. They often support programs and policies that promote equality and create opportunities for people who may face disadvantages.A good example is healthcare. Conservatives may prefer private healthcare and less government involvement, while liberals may support government programs that help more people gain access to healthcare. The dividing line seems to be that conservatives place a stronger focus on liberty and individual responsibility, while liberals place a stronger focus on equality and social support.

3:The way I understand Althusser’s definition of ideology is that ideology is not just about politics. It is something that is all around us and influences the way we think without us always realizing it. He believed that institutions such as schools, families, churches, and the media help shape our beliefs and teach us what society considers normal, successful, or acceptable. For example, from a young age many people are taught that success means getting a good education, finding a stable career, and working hard. Those ideas can become part of how we see ourselves and the world. In my own words, ideology is like a lens that shapes our perception of reality. It influences our thoughts, behaviors, and understanding of the world so deeply that we often do not notice it is there.
