1. The word Faction reminds me of social class. The word faction is a group of people who share the same interests or beliefs. These group of people can come together due to either money, power, or even opinion. James Madison worried about the faction causing fights between different groups. He thought a section of a group will only do things to benefit themselves. So that reminds me of today. The rich only think of benefiting the rich and how they can make more money.
  2. In Federalist #10, James Madison says wealthy comes from owning multiple properties. People have different abilities and talents. Due to this some people earn more money while others can earn less. He believed this wouldn’t change no matter what generation it will always be there. This why we always have some people who are rich and some who are just poor.
  3. I don’t agree with Madison’s idea. I think some people aren’t just rich because of talents, but it’s due to past down wealth. Being born into a wealthy family already gives you that advantage. Some people can fight so hard to reach to the top as well, but still end up struggling. Racism, education, and your environment can affect the circumstances as well. Our social system makes it harder for the poor to get ahead in life.
  4. Madison said U.S. government was to protect property and wealth. This means the government first goal was to always help the rich and keep what they owned. This didn’t surprise me but I believe we should protect everyone equally.
  5. I’m not surprise that federalist #10 didn’t support democracy. Madison was also a wealthy man so all he could really do was just use his words but his actions didn’t align with what he preached. Including the farmers. They all didn’t want the poor to have so much control. Afraid that the poor will take land and money from them.

  1. Hi Rosie! You made a good connection between factions and social class, which fits well with the warning issued by Madison about “competing interests.” I also agree that inherited riches, rather than merely talent, contributes significantly to who is successful today. Your argument of government defending all of us equally reflects my personal philosophy of what the genuine democracy should be, providing equal opportunity and fair-mindedness to everyone.
