Discussion Board 3.2 Ryan Cuevas

1. A repressive state apparatus is something where what needs to be controlled/ conquered is done through force. These are situations where a lunatic can be out harming people and who takes action, police. Any type of force done by police, army, and even courts. It may not always be physical but its a force that punishes. Repressive means to restraint so Althusser calls it this since it restraints us by order/ force. Similar to what we’ve seen with protest today where officers or national guards must contain crowd control.

2. Ideological state apparatus is what shapes how we think and believe. Our mindset. There are factors to these like schools, religion, family, and even media. All these things teach morales, ethics, and values versus repressive that manages through force. Examples of these are schools teaching discipline, respect when talking to a teacher. Gets implemented in further life with your coworker, friends, boss, family, and professors. Know who the authority is and don’t mess up. Even religions like stay clean until marriage with your significant other. Teaches you a value of being cleansed with one person as you grow with each other.

3. Repressive versus ideological is control through punishments and control through implemented beliefs. Major key differences between RSA and ISA are RSA uses force like violence, law enforcements, court systems, and even prisons if you think about it. ISA works through what we surround ourselves everyday with. School, media, and culture. Media is a big part because it feeds us what we WANT to hear and nothing of the other sides.

I chose a music piece called, “Angel Down” by Lady Gaga. This song was famous for the set time and place it was released. It is mentioning the shooting in Orlando a while ago that was tragic and took the lives of many. Its ideological by mentioning symbolism of empathy, anti-violence, and unfair systems that shape us to see the unjust around us. Sympathy we have is for a human life lost, here it is multiple. It should change how we see violence and reflect on social violence.

Okay, let ‘s go to the questions, consider the following:

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example.

2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start us of off by giving an example.
