1) Select 1-2 paragraphs from The Subtle Evolution of Native American Education OR “Facts About American Indian Education.” Summarize them and respond to them.

Native American children were educated in a variety of ways. Some tribes had formal schools run by the government or religious organizations, while others relied on informal methods such as apprenticeships and storytelling. Native Americans educated their children through ceremony, story telling, and observation, teaching them about their cultural heritage and a spiritual relationship with the earth and all beings. I understand that back in the days, boarding school attendance was mandated. American Indian children were removed from their families, for months or years at a time, and placed in the boarding school where a harsh indoctrination occurred. The primary focus of these schools was to assimilate Native children to dominate the American culture’s language, values, and behaviors through a process of deculturalization and they taught their children about their cultural heritage and a spiritual relationship with the earth and all beings.

2) Discuss something you learned and/ or can relate to from one of this week’s videos.

The portrayal of Native Americans in K-12 textbooks can impact how they feel about their Native identity. For example, someone whose mother is Navajo and whose father is white might check the white box on paper. Instead of building cultural and social capacity or teaching Native students to adapt in culturally responsive ways, the American education system was designed to suppress tribal identities.

3) Share your source on this topic–let us know what it is, why you selected it, and why it matters.

I am sharing a source because I think it is related to the topic. It is a source which I picked from “NATIVE HOPE.” I choose this site because it has more information about Native American Education and some of the issues surrounding it. I believe that it matters because it has every information and lets us know about the problems facing us so that we will know how and a way to face it and make it right for everyone and for the country because i know that the problem we are having is because we do not know what the problem is so we do not know how to put an end to it but if we know what the problem is then a plan on how to end it will be mapped out.
