Maria Kaye- Strategies

  1. This term although not directing racism or racist slurs, that is what it actually does. It creates a larger on civil rights movements, or communities of color. By using the term “law and order”, it creates this fantasy of the police and the government taking charge in doing what is “right”, regardless of it being true or not. The intensions of this terms does not reflect what it should mean. It gives those using this term the ability to abuse of their power and therefore continuing segregation.

2. I don’t think the Souther Strategy is an influence in today’s politics. One of the many reasons being that in todays politics we are able to have black governors, mayors, borough leaders and let’s not forget, we had a black president elected twice! Now in 2021 we have a women of color as VP of our nation. If the Southern Strategies were still in place this would not be possible. So many things wouldn’t be possible if this were still in effects, schools, transportation, jobs, wages and discrimination towards people of color would be even more present now.

DB 2.2

Southern Racist politician wanted the public to believe that by supporting the Civil rights movement was virtually the same as conspiring to commit crimes, creating the “law and Order” was their way of going against the Civil rights movement . It was also a good reason for them to defend segregation. “law and order” was effective to the white working class in the South who where appose to integration but it ultimately failed to prevent the formal dismantling of the Jim Crow system.

I believe that politician still try to use the “Southern Strategy” as a way to gain votes because it had been one of the most successful strategy in history. During his re-election campaign, Trump made racial issues the center of his message. He delivered two speech both in which he defended the confederate flag. His goal was to encourage white fear and resentment . It was a fail because Our country is changing, it’s more diverse.

Jennifer Louis- Southern Strategy

1.Southern politician chose to frame their defense of racial segregation through the language of “law and order “ to create a strategy that easily turns into the fear of change  and  dissatisfaction of poor and working-class white in both north and south , African American and people who was involved in the increase of crimes with urban riots. When law and order is mentioned politicians are often referring to the policing and targeting of black and brown communities. This works for them because they are able to receive the votes of the “the traditional Republican base, the white South, and half the Catholic, blue-collar vote of the big cities.”  The special advantage in this choice of words gave them an opportunity to target their specific audience while simultaneously not personally commenting on any one racial or ethic group and to not be blamed for unambiguous racism. .

2.Southern strategy is not influencing American politics today to the same extent that it has in the past because the country now is becoming more racially diverse and as years go on people’s opinion on race has been reconstructed. An example of southern strategy not influencing the politics is the trial of Derek Chauvin, a white officer that was guilty of the murder of an African- American man George Floyd. Officer Chauvin kneeled on Mr. Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes during his arrest in May 2020 which led to his death. After this tragedy many protestors from every ethnic-group and race supported the Black community in their cry for justice. The Black Lives Matter movement brought a lot of people together to fight racism and police brutality against black people. The officer was then found guilty by a jury. Of course there will always be slight influences of southern strategy in american politics but the influence is less prominent.

Discussion 2.2

It is evident that different factors including the Negro out-migration would create a favorable condition favorable to political change in the American South. The politicians believe that the language of law and order only applies to the colored population, which mostly does not support their political ideas. This makes race relations more combustible in American South than elsewhere.

Question 2

No, I don’t think that the strategy still exists today. The public is aware and also against any form of racial segregation. For example, there has been a significant number of the U.S. community in the South that was involved in #blacklivesmatters movement.

Linda Li – Thinking about the language of “law and order” and southern strategy

  1. First of all, there’s civil rights movement in the 1950s and 60s against racial segregation, because there were many inequalities led minority people of color living with frustration and anger. For example, people of color were not allowed to go to the same school, the colored kids were not allowed to the same playground, even separate restaurants, hotels and medical care. Laws said, whites can have seats in front of the bus, but black had to stand behind, or they can have seats only after all the white got one. If any people of color do not follow it will be sent to jail. This is the famous law, called segregated but equal. That’s why the civil right movement was widespread and aimed to end the horrible segregation laws. Because they ruin people’s lives, these unjustifiably laws have to be gotten rid of. On the other hand, the Southern racist politicians who support segregation would definitely do something to put down the civil rights movement. But they can’t directly arrest those protestors as they are not allowed because the bill of rights in the U.S, constitution says that people have the right to political protest. But, their strategy is to define civil rights activists to be criminals. By doing this, the law allows the police to get them to jail. Moreover, because criminals are dangerous to society, the politicians start talking about civil rights activists to define them as criminals. By that, they can continue segregation in another way.
  1. The Southern Strategy was a presidential election campaign by the republican party for the 1968 presidential election. Seemingly, the Southern Strategy doesn’t influence American politics because the society becomes more and more democratic, and the system improves. However, is it the reality? In my point of view, the root still influences American politics, it might being less or in other ways to continue. The world is changing to become more diverse, and the new generation Americans are pretty liberal, but we can observe some politicians still using the very similar strategy to win the votes like Nixon promised some certain group and majority to win his presidency. For example, to gain the support of white voters, Clinton made public housing projects exclude people with criminal records and made many people in the drug war that 90% are black or Latino become homeless. Also countless people with criminal records are exiled to mainstream society, where they may be discriminated against in employment, housing and education opportunities, and voting rights. Even today, the last politician promised the majority to consolidate their advantage, and most of his supporters are whites and helped him to win the election.
