A repressive state apparatus focuses on maintaining the normal reproduction of the means of production and in that manner assure the hegemony of capitalism, its leadership, and the corporate control. Althusser call it ‘repressive’ due to its application on marginalization among the working class -fisherman, construction workers, migrant workers – to benefit the dominant rich.

Ideological state apparatuses are school of thoughts, where different ideologies are learnt. The students are confined and taught to accept similar ideologies that only apply in their classroom.

Repressive and ideological state apparatuses are different from each other. Repressive uses intimidations, therefore restraining an individual’s right to exercise personal freedom. It is different from ideological state in that it prevents expression of own ideological thoughts and ideas.
