I would also like to incorporate more personal reflection in my course prep, as well as in my classroom. I just need to better link it to a purpose for students. Sometimes I think that they think I just assign busywork, especially when a specific task is not graded, like an din class free write.

I appreciate the recognition that our students have come with trauma well before the pandemic. I also acknowledge that it is sometimes difficult to then be taught by folks who are from social categories that have contributed to the trauma and reaped the benefit of the privileges derived from those traumas.

I am considering better ways to include projects that are more applied, and better aligned with the goals of students. In fact, there was supposed to be a Career Institute to help generate ways to include more/better career focused modules, which I imagine might be more applied.

I use PBS video content, although it changes periodically and without notice. The offer some programming with instructor guides, lessons and assessments. Usually they are for 12th grade ad under, but useful to adapt. It’s not an “open” source, but it is less biased and meant to be shared with the world at large.

Agreed – syllabi are not all “just” contracts, but an opportunity to convey ideas and engage students in the overall purpose of the course, and demonstrate a bit of insight into the instructor’s personality. My syllabus sounds a lot like yours. I do like the idea of including a section on why the course, objectives and assignments are relative. I think I may work on one that is designed generally form my CRJ classes, then link that to the specific outcomes in the courses I currently teach. Thanks for the idea.
