Discussion 1

Good evening fellow classmates and Professor, my name is I’tanisha Lewis and I do allow most people to call me Nisha due to a lot of people mispronouncing my name. I was born in Philadelphia, raised in the South Bronx and the third oldest of six siblings and a mother of two pretty amazing kids. I enjoy quality time with my family, yoga, meditating, watching YouTube to learn how to maintain my naturality of my hair, watching the ID channel, Chopped, non-fiction and fiction movies and online shopping. I am almost sure this is the last year of school for me as I am working on obtaining my Associate’s in Early Childhood Education.

I currently started working at the DOE as a Subpara which is pretty challenging, challenging meaning the bouncing around from different classes, but have worked with some amazing children so far. My ultimate goal is to continue my education at Hunter College after I graduate and to become a full-time Paraprofessional with the DOE. I hope to learn more about sexuality and culture, overall, just how women are overlooked when it comes to certain things, listening to different views and opinions from my peers in class while sharing my own and have a better understanding of thw course.

Rutdany Peralta – Discussion 1

Hello everyone! My name is Rutdany Peralta and I am 19 years old with a couple of tattoos that I love and believe show my individuality. My family immigrated from the Dominican Republic when I was 6 years old and we’ve lived in the Bronx ever since then. For 2022 I decided I wanted to travel and really get to know myself more. So for January break, I went back to visit my family in Bonao, Dominican Republic for the first time since 2012. It was such an amazing and humbling experience in which I realized just how American I’ve become. It was shocking, to say the least, how disconnected I was from my roots and how much I couldn’t relate to certain things. Going to a new place everyday and meeting a bunch of wonderful people made me realize I have to step out of my comfort zone and really try to make friends; friends are such a huge part in our lives as adults because they contribute to our happiness. Those 2 weeks in DR taught me more about life and myself than the past 2 years have in the Bronx and to me that says a lot. I can’t wait to learn more about myself.

Currently, I am a Liberal Arts major who’s still undecided as to what I really want to do. I’m a really indecisive person so my academic and personal interests are always changing and make it hard to choose what I want to do/study for the years to come. However, in the next couple of years I hope to see myself making a difference and helping children in need whether they’re in the foster system, a bad home or just need care. I’m super passionate about this and it’s unsettling to me knowing there are children without a home and in much need of love and care.

I’m looking forward to taking this class and learning more about the reasons and theories women are so marginalized in various parts of society and how possibly about myself.

Discussion #1

My name is Vitória Moros, and I’m working towards becoming a modern-day renaissance woman. I’m 19 and studying to get a degree in Liberal Arts. I have interests in politics, writing, philosophy, and art, so liberal arts was a perfect major that allows me to indulge in all of that. I was born in Recife, Brazil, and migrated to America when I was about seven years old. I’ve lived in New York City since, but I always go back and visit and miss my homeland every day. I’m in love with music, art, photography, writing, and fashion. When it comes to music I listen to pretty much everything but my main rotation is mostly indie rock and bregrafunk. The main form of art that I enjoy the most is digital art, different forms of animation created graphically. I feel like it just looks so cool and realistic and there is something about creating a fantasy with such vivid colors that you can see on a big screen or interact with or even become a part of. I just find everything about it amazing. When it comes to photography I have been doing it since the age of 12. I love calling my friends over and using them as a subject and just having fun. Photography gives me the ability to create a different reality from reality. With just a few props and good lighting, my friends and I can be anything we want to be. It’s just so fun. to capture and experience, a person, or just a setting from a certain place in time. Photography can even be utilized for historical purposes. It’s just a multi-use kind of medium and I appreciate that. I’m very passionate about writing and it’s where I best common irate my thoughts. I hope that in the nearing future I’m able to publish at least two books. At last, we have fashion and it’s just something I admire and pay attention to a lot. I like to see how other people put certain items together and how they express themselves. Essiantely I believe that if you are into fashion you are aware of how what you wear sends out a certain expression about yourself. I think it’s something people can have fun with and fluctuate around different esthetics. In the future, I want to make enough money so I can live a life where I mainly focus on creating new things. I’m taking this class not just to learn something new, but I feel like it is pivotal to understand what being a woman in society means.

Nasser Ali Discussion 1

Hi, my name is Nasser Ali, but I usually go by Nas with people I know personally. I like to read, and I love art and music! I enjoy writing and playing the piano. I value personal relationships, forming connections, and working to positively contribute to the community. I hope to find a career that fits me, one that supports my dream of making life and the world easier for current and future generations. I go by he/they. I’ve always wanted to take this course and I would like to expand my knowledge and be more conscientious regarding different genders. Some examples of things I hope we cover would be the gender identity of intersex individuals, the sexualization of female ethnic groups in the United States, and the gender spectrum of Indigenous groups. a film that I know of that could be helpful in this course is called “The Hunting Ground”.

P.S: For some reason, my original post wasn’t published, so I went ahead and re-published it.

Jocelyn Alonzo Discussion 1

Hello everyone, my name is Jocelyn Alonzo. I am 18 years old. My ethnicity is Ecuadorian. My pronouns are she/her. I’m from The Bronx, I have lived in New York my whole life. This is my second semester at BMCC. I am majoring in liberal arts. I really value my relationships with my family and friends. I disliked when people feel the need to bring down people just to feel better about them. I like listening to music because its kinda an escape from reality and it makes me feel relaxed and at peace. I like to make people laugh because I feel like we should always try to bring the positivity in life. I like the idea of traveling around the world. I hope that some day I would be able to travel around the world and see how beautiful different cultures and country are. I love taking pictures of the sunsets and how the beautiful colors bounce of the tall builds in New York. I am excited to have deep conversation in this class and see how I could incorporate some topics into my life in the future .

Frankie Moure II Discussion #1

Hello everyone! My name is Frankie Moure Ii. I’m 20 years old and this is my third semester at BMCC. As of right now I am majoring in liberal arts since BMCC doesn’t have the major that I want to pursue. The major I’d like to pursue is Sports Management. With the Sports Management degree I hope to get a job in the sports world whether it’s for a professional team or behind the scenes on tv. Once I graduate from BMCC I’d like to either transfer to a school in a different state to get the going away experience or I’ll go to a four year CUNY school to get my bachelors degree. My pronouns are He/Him and I was born and raised in The Bronx besides a short period in my life when I lived in Florida. Two things I value the most are respect and trust, I feel that with those two things you’ll be able to live life easier. I love to travel and drive to places because I find that the road is peaceful on long trips, especially when you have music playing. I also love to take pictures and go to sporting events. Life is short so I like to have fun.

I’m taking this course because it was recommended to me by my sister. I hope that I’m able to learn a lot in this class. I am very open minded so I’ll enjoy being in this class learning new things. I might be one of the only guys in here so I hope that gender equality is covered as I think that it is something that we should’ve had a long time ago. I would also like to learn about women’s history and the many influential women that have roamed this earth. Off the top of my head I don’t have any recommendations of movies, books, or podcasts but I’m excited to see what everyone else has to say. I hope you all have a great semester!

Jesica Rodriguez Discussion #1

Hello everyone, my name is Jesica Rodriguez. I am 21 years old and Mexican/American. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. My pronouns are she/her/hers. I have a dog. His name is Salchicha. My outside interest is taking a walk with my dog at Prospect Park. Some of my other interests are traveling, spending time with my friends and family, and music. Well, traveling is something that I would like to do more going forward in my life because it is something that I will enjoy. Like exploring new places, trying new things, different activities, food, learning about other cultures.

I am majoring in early childhood education. The reason why I chose to major in that major is that as I grew up I have been babysitting up until now and on my siblings. I have a total of four younger siblings. I have always wanted to know more about children and other skills as becoming a teacher I will need to use one day when I’m in a classroom full of kids. As well I always like seeing children smile, laugh and I want to make a change for the children and teach them the right way.

I’m taking this course because it’s a requirement for my major but overall I’m excited to take this course and to learn more about women and their history. To hear and learn more about other women whose voice was not heard or maybe someone who I might not know about, or learn more accomplishments others do and hear what was the reason for them to speak up and make a change in this world.

Clare Kutsko Discussion #1

My name is Clare Kutsko. I am in my final credits at BMCC towards a AA in Psychology. I am majoring in Psychology with an end goal of being a therapist, which has been a dream of mine for many years.

I am in school part time, taking anywhere from 1-3 classes a semester, as I am already in a career as an Interior Designer. Which I have been doing for 10+ years now. I have had some amazing jobs and have learned a lot in this field, as you do with any professional experience. One important thing I have learned is how to connect the dots to understand what lead me from one interest to another, and how to identify those strengths that can be utilized to help me in my next chapter.

Working with others and developing the ability to communicate, pay attention to people’s needs and wants, and have a genuine desire to continue to improve upon what you bring to a work environment are all extremely valuable skills that I can apply throughout my life.

I also have really enjoyed being in school, I love to learn new things, and I especially love to hear how others think and feel about topics. I am looking forward to this class!

Alexandra Diodonet’s Discussion Post 1

My name is Alexandra Diodonet. This is my last year at BMCC and I’m transferring to Lehman College in the fall of 2022. I am a psychology major (who’s planning on minoring in English). I am hoping in the future I get to work with children and youths with their mental illness or be a forensic psychologist. Either way, my goal is to achieve my master’s. I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, and moved to Manhattan when I was four or five years old. My pronouns are she/her/hers. I have a lot of things that are passionate to me such as skateboarding, talking about conspiracy theories, everything from horror, true crimes, and anime. When it comes to conspiracy theories, one of my favorite topics to talk about are the hidden messages in shows, also cartoon shows, the Simpsons predicting the future, and the meaning behind childhood shows/movies. My goal in life is to help people struggling with depression, anxiety, and other serious illnesses to give support to people that they’re not alone and that should not be afraid of getting help, not a psychiatrist but possibly a social worker or a forensic psychologist. I am the first person in my family to head into college and I am so excited to be the first generation in my family to graduate from college. My parents are United States citizens however my grandparents were born and raised in Puerto Rico. I am also Italian from my mother’s side of the family. Puerto Rican and Italian are the only cultures I represent in my family.  The reason why I am taking this course is to learn more about women and gender studies. Most of the time I’ve learned some stuff from TikTok, such as feminism and heavy topic that is based on women’s rights, also learning the history and the presence of gender studies and women from other countries not only the United States. Most of the time I learn about women’s rights through social media and sometimes on the news. I feel like once I take this class, I’ll learn more facts about gender and women’s studies. At first, I had no idea it was a class and a major when I first came to college. Once I found out about this class, I decided to see what topics people were going to discuss and the courses if you’re majoring in gender and women’s studies

Melissa. Valle Discussion 1

My name is Melissa. I am majoring in Nursing i will be transferring for my next semester to a four year college so i can get my Bachelors Degree in Nursing. I use the she/her pronouns. I am from Brooklyn, I have lived here all my life but at the age of 10 went to North Carolina until i was 13 years old. I am a singe mother of three children ages 24, 19 and 14. I have worked for the NYC Police Department for the last 18 years. I have always wanted to be a Nurse but my job was convenient for me while raising my children.  I was able to take them to school and be home in time to be there for them to feed them and help them with their work. Now that they are older now i can continue my studies and accomplish what i started out doing and paused.

I love to travel out of the country, so during the pandemic it was hard for me not traveling.  But during this time i watched lots of movies and read lots of books.  Family time became more of a special moment for me.  When your children get older one think that they kind of  stray away but i believe it made the bond stronger.  i am  great full for that. I dislike math. The reason i am taking this course it because it is required. But i am a person that looks into what is subjects are about and it became very interesting to me. I would like to understand and learn the meaning of some words that are new to me. Especially in a world where there are people who don’t want to understand that we are not all the same. But that we are all human and that is the most important thing. I care a great deal about how people feel and how they think and if learning something new can help me understand then i can pass that knowledge forward. Cant wait to see what is ahead.
