The story “The Most Handsome Drowned Man” may have been assigned to us because it may set the tone for what other stories are to come. We may read other short stories/ books that have this mythical and scary tone to them. Or maybe this story will help us better understand the stories that we’re going to read. This was a very interesting story, a good first story I may add, it definitely gets you to start thinking. I thought it was cool that the village started to changes after their encounter with this man. It is crazy to think a dead guy could have a good impact on a small village and change their way of thinking. The women of the town started to think deep into Estabans life and even gave him that name. Now thanks to Estaban, they were seeing how dirty their town was and decided to change that. Maybe all of the stories we will read have something that is glorified and makes us snap back to reality?

Hello Justine. I think you are right, I think this story will help us learn to think deeply about a text and get a better understanding. This was definitely a story that made me think a lot about why the villagers reacted the way they did, how their feelings changed so drastically from idolizing this stranger to feeling pity for him, and how they felt so much sadness over his loss although they never knew him.
I wasn’t expecting that the suffocated man could advance the existence of the townspeople since it was a dead man. In my perspective, I believe that a dead man could change a town even a nation assuming it was ahead of development. For instance, Martin Luther King. In any case, the dead man improved their lives by providing them with a more otherworldly perspective on the real world. For me, the lesson of this story, whatever isn’t really great for somebody can be great for another person to bring a change or a change.
I also agree with your answer for the story “The Most Handsome Drowned Man. I think that the first story will set the tone for the rest of the semester. Its crazy to think that one thing like that can change your whole outlook on life. Esteban was just a dead man with impressive features and inspired so many people in the village to change their ways without him saying or doing anything. They wanted Esteban to Rest In Peace even when no one knew who he was.
