Short Assignment #4

Summary

Do you believe banning traffic stops like in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc, will bring positive changes to the justice system and the affected communities? Write your thoughts on this question.

To believe banning traffic stops will bring a positive change in the justice system is idiotic. Some may argue in favor due to racial profiling and systemic issues in law enforcement, but that's an issue within the police department which I agree we should fix and that starts with educating our officers from far behind the academy and while they're in college. Traffic are important for law enforcement and to the local communities to ensure safety, enforce traffic laws, and prevent criminal activity. Banning traffic stops altogether could prevent police ability to control and enforce the laws of the roads and increasing traffic violations. For example, I used to street race on the roads at night away from neighborhoods but I knew people in the same street scene and community who willingly and preferably race in broad daylight in front of schools, houses, and anywhere near local communities with zero regard. They would also go out in traffic and weave in and out in front of cars going high speeds for a rush of adrenaline. A stop in traffic stops would definitely have these people acting out more frequently. A ban might not address the root causes of issues within the justice system and could limit the police's ability to help the communities in a preventive manner. It's important to focus on reform and training to eliminate racism and improve police-community relationships rather than eliminating traffic stops which ensure community safety.
