Food Zheng – Reflection 8

These readings made me realize the infinite aspects in which women are being oppressed by the same man, even when they already have their rights. Which is curious, since if they were given equal rights, and their rights completely, why are there still these different thoughts and stereotypes on what an ideal woman should be? It is These readings made me realize the infinite aspects in which women are being oppressed by the same man, even when they already have their rights. Which is curious, since if they were given equal rights, and their rights completely, why are there still these different thoughts and stereotypes on what an ideal woman should be? It is very sad to know that women went through all these movements, episodes, and all injustices to continue being treated as servants by men. At first, I was very sensitive to what Koedt’s article was about, as I didn’t see much of a relationship between women’s rights and having an orgasm. But then, after reading the article, I realized that even in intercourse, women are oppressed and even, for not reaching an orgasm properly, they are already categorized as “frigidity”. It makes me very sad to know that this article may have helped many men in being able to please women, but what about those whose sexual partners did not know anything about this information? They just had intercourse without caring if the woman experienced pleasure or not?. It’s sad, knowing that even in things as personal as sexual relations, women still have a disadvantage (created by men).

Food Zheng – Discussion 9

After reading this week’s material, I can say that a liberated woman is being able to do anything she wants, with the person (whether of any gender) who satisfies her. Since, in the reading of Mainardi Pat “The Politics of Housework” we see how men are talked about, they do not take much importance to what housework is. They think it’s not a real job, and that it’s a “hobby” that they don’t want to go through but want their wives to do. That is why it is connected with the fact of being able to be a liberated woman, since these taboos still exist where women and only women must do certain tasks when men see it as very tedious. A liberated woman is able to do anything without it being a duty, that is, if a woman wants to do housework, let her do it, but if she doesn’t want to and wants to work or just wants to let the housework Make her partner, it’s fine too. The liberation of a woman is to be able to have the option to choose whatever she wants without waiting for another person to decide for her, it is to be able to have the right to decide her life path and what she wants to do with it.

Therefore, it is extremely important, because being able to know and see any liberated woman, choosing her own path and options, is being able to realize that genders are now treated equally and not just by stereotypes or categorizations. It is being able to create the change that all women have been waiting for a long time, without listening to criticism of any caliber. Even in Koedt Anne’s article, “The myth of the Vaginal Orgasm” we see how it is being stereotyped, saying that women are more “frigidity” and that she does not reach orgasm because of her own frigidity. We see how they are being stereotyped by the same ideology of what is correct that a normal woman should be and what is not, based on how her level of satisfaction is created by herself, when the man only focuses on his own satisfaction without caring about that of her. It is very curious to me, how even after knowing that the woman has more pleasure when she focuses on her clitoris, but even so there are cases in which the man does not care about that fact and only continues to rely on his own pleasure. It is very sad to know how women can be victims of oppression, even sexually.

This shows that “the personal is political” because as in the two articles, we saw how the stereotypes are mostly based on the fact that a man has imposed these rules for each woman. Despite the fact that it is not a state rule and completely safe, it is indirectly in this way, since if you do not follow this stereotype you will be criticized until you do what the rule imposed. Also, I can say that it is political, as I remember while studying “social studies” on the topic of world war. I remember they showed us the propaganda of that time, saying things like “if your husband goes to war, you should stay home and help him with housework to show your support”. Which gives us a clear example of how politics can also get into the personal thoughts of each gender, implementing this ideology that women should be at home.

Food Zheng – Reflection 7

I was very surprised to read this week’s article “Virginia Just Became the 38th State to Pass the Equal Rights Amendment. Here’s What to Know About the History of the ERA” because despite knowing what the women’s suffrage movement was, I did not know much about this march on equal rights. I was also very surprised to learn that the first ratification failed and how the women did not lose hope to try again and take their rights again. In the same way, the videos about “The Triangle Shirt Waist” surprised me and at the same time it sounded very familiar to me, I’m not sure if I had heard what happened in class or something, but I also remember that my teacher had told me about the fire It started with the same manager who was smoking at that time and since there was not very good ventilation and there was also no option to go outside to smoke, he had the audacity to do it in the middle of the place, which caused not the fire, this is not a 100% certified data but it could have been an option at the time. As well as it could have been some machine that caused the fire or things like that. What made me very angry was the fact that there were 4 elevators but only one worked. It was very sad to know that all those women died due to the same ignorance that existed in their time, for not having rights, for not having given them a better environment and not treating them as human beings.

Food Zheng – Discussion 8

These are related to each other for the same reason that they work together with the objective of bringing justice to the rights of each woman. Suffrage, Labor Rights, and the Equal Rights Amendment are objectives that every woman at the time did not have and that with effort these movements were able to create in order to obtain the justice they deserved. In his time, there was always talk about rights and how everyone should have them, but they always accepted the fact that everyone should have them except women. This is why these 3 movements are interrelated in order to provide them with the rights that every woman deserves. It is to obtain protection for any situation that occurs, such as “The Triangle Shirtwaist ” at that time there was no better condition in the work environment for the very fact that those who worked there were women and nobody cared that women something happens at work, because they have no rights. That is why with these movements they fought so that each woman has this protection of the same rights as hers and that another catastrophe does not occur due to simple discrimination.

Labor rights are also issues of gender justice due to the very fact that at the time, men were paid a certain amount at their jobs while women were given less than the minimum. This is why it creates gender justice, because at the time men were protected by the fact that if they weren’t paid a certain amount they were going against the rules, but if women were paid much less, it wasn’t important or they couldn’t even think of being able to charge the same as the man. This is what happens with the ERA, women realized the discrimination in rights and that is why they started this movement in order to obtain what should be inherited for them by nature. Even if at the time, the first time the movement failed, they did not give up and quickly got back on the road to fight for rights.

I see these historical themes more represented in a more spontaneous way, it is said that women have the right to anything but they are judged as soon as they say they want to work instead of having children. Despite having fought for each of the rights, there are still things that are still being fought for. I have heard many times that they suggest that a woman, when interviewing for an important job, not say that she wants to be a mother soon because otherwise the company will not take her into account. For the simple fact that if she says that she wants to be a mother, she means that the company has to pay her for the rest of the days that she will have due to her pregnancy and it would also be valid for the woman to take the day off in case her child gets sick. Many times, they say that there is no discrimination against women, but there are small actions that show the opposite. Despite having fought for all her rights, there are still things that are still a little out of place.

Food Zheng – Reflection 6

After reading this week’s readings, I’d like to be honest and say that I was completely ignorant about the whole women’s rights movement. I remember in high school I was only told about Mary Wollstonecraft, who thought she was the originator of the entire women’s rights movement. Which in part is so, but Wollstonecraft was not the only one who was in that process but also people like Jeremy Bentham, Marquis de Condorcet, and Olympe de Gouges. Who also contributed their thoughts regarding the movement for women’s rights. As well as the fact that women in her time did not have the power to vote either. Which was something very unfair for the simple fact that they did not have a voice to choose or say what they wanted in their time. Also, I was very surprised by the fact that women’s rights were created by specific areas/states of the country instead of having been given to everyone at the same time. This week’s readings were seriously very informative in explaining to us what actually happened, and what everyone is going through even now. I was very surprised, the fact of what cultural hegemony is and how it is more like symbolic violence, that it is created by the same domination of society, a diverse culture, or even by some ruling class. The truth is that I did not know anything about this term, and it was very interesting to be able to know and read about it, since as I see it now it is something that all people should know so as not to submit to this mistake (to make it).now so as not to submit to this mistake (to make it).

Food Zheng – Discussion 7

After reading this week’s readings, I would like to be honest and say that I am seriously ignorant of the entire women’s rights movement. I was very surprised how the movement is named after waves, and how they stopped counting it that way in the third/fourth wave so to speak. But I wonder why they classify it this way? As far as I know (and sorry if this also happens with other movements) most of the movements are called by their names instead of “waves”. I’m not criticizing the way it was classified, but I can feel a bit out of place that it is named this way. Likewise, reading Katz Jackson’s “Guilty Pleasures Pornography, Prostitution and Stripping” got me thinking about whether porn or stripping itself leads men to take advantage of women? Since in the reading, he talks about how he has seen or even gone to stripping but has never thought about oppressing women, but if we think about it another way, pornography and stripping are a way of oppressing women. women. I know, there is also porn or stripping based on making men more vulnerable, but regularly they only show women in a position of submission. That makes me wonder if this actually affects the thoughts of man, or is it that most of us are capable of knowing what reality and fiction are? I also found Vasquez Tina’s reading “It’s Time to End the Long History of Feminism Failing Transgender Women” very interesting, who explains a very strong reality for women and men, who go through the process of changing their sex in order to feel comfortable with themselves. That she explains, about how transgender people also go through strong moments, where they are discriminated against, criticized, and even attacked for having made this decision. Which is extremely sad, since they just want to be able to be what they feel they really are. This week’s readings were very interesting and informative, to learn more about what happened in history and even today.

Food Zheng – Reflection 5

In this week’s “activism” theme, he lets us see how activism is being able to take action to create change, as well as being able to take a step forward to some injustice that anyone is going through. . In reading “How to think like an Activism ” it was very impressive the fact that they talk about how just by writing or even saying something, you can be a participant in change. That indifference is much worse than insecurity, since many times people excuse themselves for not helping someone who needs it because they are insecure when, in themselves, they are only letting themselves be carried away by indifference. Also, I am a bit disappointed, due to the fact that in the activism or in the movements that were presented, many times it was a person who stood up for a change, when they could do much more. It is true that a leader is needed to be able to make the movement, but it is a bit sad to know that many people would only have stayed with injustice if someone did not take the step to end it. In the film “Girl Connected”, it seemed to me something very impressive, how every woman from any community was helping each other to create a change in her. Despite all the injustices that were happening in her country, they did not give up but took a step forward and tried to find a solution for anyone. As well as, we can also see that despite the fact that these problems that each one of them is suffering are due to the same values that were instilled a long time ago, they continue to be proud of their country and also seek with it a chance to have a better quality of life.

Food Zheng – Discussion 6

After reading this week’s material about activism, I can say that it is a movement where each person in a community or group is willing to obtain a change to any injustice or insecurity that they are having. In the article “How To Think Like An Activist”, we can see how they explain each of the points of being able to be or recognize an activist. They speak to us as in history many of the movements such as “the salt march”, “the revolutions” or even taking some action for a change, is a great indication and a great example of what it is to be an activist. Something that I have noticed in any activist movement is that it always starts with someone who takes the lead in order to create change. That is why it is important to be able to realize the injustice that is happening and take a step forward to show our faces and demonstrate each of our values. Since, in the reading they also tell us about indifference, this more than anything is the fact that many times by the same “defense system” we move away from injustice instead of taking a step and defending or taking action about it. it. They tell us about how even ignoring a fact that you know is being unfair towards a community or person, makes us participate by the same indifference. As well as, it tells us that being able to make the change take effect takes longer than one really thinks, since even women like “Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton” who were the pioneers of the movement to bring women’s rights. They were treated with indifference and even as a joke, in their time only for all the values that had been instilled. That over time, even a little difference could be seen in what concerns women’s rights, it was not something overnight for this to take effect.

in the film “Girl Connected” we can see how any woman from any country, are united in the movement of supporting each other, I could say that they were more aware of a feminist movement, but what I saw more was the fact of how all these women try to inform and help anyone with different goals. For example, the one in Peru was focusing more on the fact of being able to let the people gathered know how important it is to be able to prevent and find out how to protect themselves when having sexual relations. In India, there was more talk about physical defense, since we can see how they teach us about the importance of taking a little into account the fact that every woman should have some knowledge in defending herself. In Jordan, we can see how they are in the movement of being able to reuse and recycle, how with simple things we can create something totally new, either as decorations for your home or even to use in your life, I would say, it is more about how we can take advantage of everything we get along the way. In Kenya, we can see more the issue of families as they also focus on the power of women, they talk about how many women have difficulties in being able to raise their voice and make each of their rights known, as well as talk about the many family entities that are present in Kenya and how many of them do not have sufficient support. In Bangladesh, we can see more the issue of marriages, as girls are forced to marry just to be able to provide more monetary value to the family or even just because it is a tradition that has been done for every year. As we see different themes, these are interconnected by the simple fact that we focus on the vision and work of women, each of these themes were presented by women and as each one of them has an impact on the lives of all the women around. As well as, we can connect with each of these problems because they affect us in general to any woman from any country. They indirectly come together to create a change in the values that were created long before, in order to make a difference to the lives of the next women or even to their own.

Food Zheng – Reflection 4

In the readings we do this week, we talk about Johnson’s “patriarchy the system”, where In the reading we do this week, we talk about Johnson’s “patriarchy the system”, where we can understand how many times we blame society for every bad thing or every injustice that happens when we ourselves were what gave him the right to society to do this. I’m not saying that we created society, we are society, but many times we do not agree with the regulations that it violates, as well as indirectly contributing to this injustice. The fact that there are times when people, due to their own system of defense mechanisms, do not interfere in an unfair situation of others, makes us part of the problem also because if we have even a little power to end the injustice, why not? we did it?. Similarly, we read of Audre Lorde in “There Is No Hierarchy of Oppressions”, where she talks about how identities and their aspects can be a very complex topic for each person. We saw how she is trying to give that encouragement to anyone who feels insecure, through her own experiences. I really admired the fact that she gets in the way, and talks about how the system criticizes any different person now but she emphasizes how after she is finished (or in general anyone) can destroy the person who supported. Many times we let ourselves be guided by what the system has for us, we get used to classify ourselves by everything that happens to us, we want and even what we like, that we did not realize what we should really focus on or who we should protect . That is why in the past, many people suffered trying to hide their true selves.

Food Zheng – Week 5 Patriarchy

In the conference “patriarchy the system” we can see how Johnson does a great job explaining what patriarchy really is and how it originated. He explains how many times we blame society for why they are so sexist or because they are so discriminatory, but society itself is us. We created society so intent on criticizing anyone who is different, by the very fact that we grew up and felt it was right to criticize and follow the crowd. It is the same system that created society, that gave it the right and power to affect us whatever they want to criticize, instead of stepping forward and being what we actually feel we are or want to be. With this, he directs us to what patriarchy really is, as the system itself, we ourselves were what allowed men to have any right and women not. it is extremely sad, the fact that in his time and even some other person, a man is applauded for having had sex with a girl and then leaving her, but he is criticized for a girl having sex with a boy and then I left it. This is the same side of the coin, about how it is said that there is currently no patriarchy, when in our system we continue to do this. The fact that we have to see patriarchy as a system that encompasses any society, culture or even religion can show us how damaged and harmful society was and is in its time. I say the fact that the system is still harmful, despite all the movements that exist to have gender equality and not a system that focuses on the man being the only one with rights.

The very fact that a while ago in high school we talked about patriarchy, and the teacher brought up whether we agreed that a man hit a woman for not doing “household duties for women”, and two girls raised their hands saying yes they agreed, at the time what I thought was a joke. But you saw the absurd reasons that the girls gave that surprised me and made me feel so sorry, the fact that the same cultures and the system they are developed, got used to seeing women in an inferior position than men. I see this case similar to Lorde’s reading “There Is No Hierarchy of Oppressions”, because it tells us about how she feels oppressed both by her race and her gender. He tells us about how everything is fine today and many people help change, but in his time this distinction did not exist and they only threw you at the stake for being different. I feel that the same system did a lot of damage to both women and anyone who is different, because in their time women may have felt that they were okay with the patriarchy, because of the same system, but now today I also feel that we are being more sensible in our decisions. As now we concentrate on being able to create a change and focus on what is more important, what the individual really wants and not what should be “right”. Because from everything I’ve seen, nothing is right or wrong, everyone has a way of seeing things and it’s better that they learn it their way and not exercise a vision of how it should be. I understand the fact that individual identity, I participate in creating society and the system, but for that very reason we have the right to be able to destroy it.
