Food Zheng – Reflection #13

To be able to talk a little about the law of Roe v. Wade, it was very interesting. Since being honest, I didn’t know the story behind this, in a certain way before reading this I was swinging in pro-life. Since, I said that there are many people who resort to sexual relations without preparing well, and without being afraid of what will happen to them, so it felt in a certain way good that they have their baby so that they learn responsibility. But also, I understood that there were situations in which abortion is the best option for these women, since it can create many mental problems and traumas. After today’s material, and thinking about it a little more, I feel that each woman decides what they want to do. I remember that I have heard about how sad it is to have an abortion and that even women can experience depression after having it. That was another reason to be pro-life. But now on second thought, I think there are many ways to overcome this type of depression if your decision is serious about having an abortion. It causes me in a way, to be able to think about preventing a new life from being born, but I fully understand that it is better to abort than to bring in a person you are not going to love. I also feel that culture and religion have a lot to do with this issue, since I seriously feel that my pro-life was created for this. Since they always implement things like “Are you going to prevent the life of a new being, just because you don’t feel ready?” Well, yes, because it is better than the baby being born in an unsuitable environment or being unwanted, or even more. challenges in your life. I agree, that you make the decision at the moment, whether to abort or not and I am very happy to know that there are many ways to carry out this process without hurting the mother.

Food Zheng – Discussion #14

My opinion about the article “Supreme Court has voted to overturn abortion rights, draft opinion shows” was very surprising for me, since being able to know more about the context and the past that all women have been going through during all these times is really sad. Alito’s argument about how they state what abortion is, knowing that many women do not have family support, or even the man who left them in that state, it has to be their decision to be able to carry out an abortion or not. If they are denied this right, we would be accepting that if a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, she will not be able to abort because she is condemned to reject abortion. From what I could tell, is that with the Roe v. Wad Law are keeping all women who do not feel ready to have a child protected and giving them the option of having an abortion.

While in Baker’s “GLOBAL HEALTH NATIONAL Telemedicine Abortion Provider Rebecca Gomperts Gets Abortion Pills Into the Hands of Those Who Need Them: ‘It’s a Privilege” article, we see how she explains more about the means of abortion. The truth is, I admit that I have been very ignorant on this subject and I was really surprised that there are pills to have an abortion and just as Gomperts comments, it is a much more viable and healthy solution for the mother. Since, I remember that in ancient times abortions were completely sad and painful for women. But now with all the technology and medicine, I find it very interesting that they have developed all of this. What I do find sad is that there are not many pharmacies (although I’m not sure if he was only referring to India exclusively) that have the power to prescribe a woman who is in the process of abortion. As Gomperts said, it’s very curious that he says that being able to prevent abortion is so that there are still more poor people and the government can control them. It is really curious, and at the same time correct in a certain way, since maybe that is why they are doing everything possible so that abortion is not a way, to continue controlling the masses.

I would also like to add that my opinion about this is very confused, since I agree that there are situations in which an abortion has to be given by right. But at the same time, I find it very sad if, for example, parents agree to have a child but after 3 months or so, they regret it and no longer want to have it, so they abort it. I feel that this should no longer be accepted, perhaps, since the 3 months passed with the decision to have the baby, then why the sudden change? I also understand that in many cases it is the financial need that they may not be able to support a baby and that taking them to a shelter is worse because it is not known how the babies would be treated. But also, there are many LGBTQIA people who would not be able to rent a womb, they would be happy to adopt (I apologize if it sounds a bit weird, as I did not quite know how to describe this in other words). In this week’s material, I learned that abortion is not a current issue, it is a law that has been around for a long time due to the fact that women were forced to get pregnant. I feel that the most important thing is to be able to let the woman decide, for the first time they should leave the decision of being pregnant or not to the woman. As in the video, we can see how all the women who call talk about not having enough support, or that not even the person who left them in the state is taking care of them. Therefore, the law Roe v. Wade should continue to be implemented, so that they finally give women the right to do with their bodies.

Reading this week’s articles made me see how even without directly participating in activism, there is always a way to show our support. I feel like the “Why Artistic Activism?” All the points listed were very important to understand why this is done, to be able to open new doors to bring out our opinion in an artistic way. I feel that it is something that has been done throughout all these times. Although it makes me very sad that many people who do artistic activism are silent or even ban their art because a larger entity is afraid of this power. Being that artistic activism, as was said in the article, is peaceful, strong images can be shown but even so it is not physically harming anyone. I would also like to say, that many ancient arts you can see a lot of naked women, and I understand the point of why they perform this type of art. But also, I feel a little bad since in a certain way they focus on unimportant things such as the physical. I understand that this is what art is about, being able to show the outside and being able to give an important message of what really matters, but I don’t know if it is because in the art that I saw these men only portrayed the figure of women and perhaps they exist but giving the figure of a man.

I chose Otto Dix’s art “The War Triptych”, since we can see the realism that existed in the time of war. A German artist, who was in the first world war, tried to give the reflections that he witnessed in reality but doing it in an artistic activist way. It is said that he was one of the first artists to be expelled from the Academy for simply doing very realistic, disgusting and dark art. But that is the reason why he does this kind of art, because he feels the need to show the reality of things. He did not try to embellish or show the beautiful things that a war brings, but rather he shows all the bad that it can bring to the country and to all people. Dix created these arts as a redemption to which he denounced the atrocities of wars, if we look at the painting and look at all the soldiers who gave their lives in a senseless war. Everything that all those people had to go through, who had no choice but to fight and defend their country. I understand that many times art is being able to see things beyond the sadness, but I feel that Dix did a great job in being able to show us the bad side of things. Many times we will just want to forget the atrocities, when in part I feel that we can learn from them so as not to repeat them or maybe just to avoid things.

Food Zheng – Reflection 12

In this week’s articles, I was made to feel like in every moment of life women, trans people, or even someone who is a little different, go through unpleasant things just because people think they have the right to make them feel that way. In the “A Birth Story” article I can remember how in one of my classes we talked about how black women say they are prone to taking C-section instead of vaginal birth because of their genetics. But even when everything was explained to me, I still don’t understand why. All women are women, and we can do what we want with our body, right? including trans people, I understand that when they become trans women, I think it is very difficult for them to be able to conceive but it is something that I feel should be investigated even a little more. Since, it is important to be able to enjoy and live our life to the fullest as anyone wants. The video let me know about the ignorance that exists in the world about how many men and women feel ashamed of what life is. Menstruation is not very clear to me, I understand very well that when I was little I felt the same way and I feel that it is something that should be changed. Because menstruation and menopause (which I feel is something that is not talked about much either) is part of every woman and is part of life and there is nothing wrong in wanting to explain it or make it known to every woman or man.

Food Zheng – Discussion 12

In the documentary “Period. End of sentence” I can see how when they ask the girls what the period is, she gets very nervous and shy about it. Even men show discomfort, they show a certain ignorance because they don’t know what it is, they describe it as if it were a disease. It was very interesting how the man showed the girls how to make the pads. But in a way I’m angry, for the fact that we only see women making those towels, the men don’t come close, the only man was the one who taught them how to make the towels. In a way, I’m also saddened by the fact that when they’re introduced to sanitary pads, men think they’re diapers and women think they’re for pregnant women. Being able to show that talking about what menstruation is in front of men should not be a source of shame. One should be proud, because menstruation is a very important path for those who want to bring a baby into the world, it is not something to be ashamed of. While in Diana Tourjee’s article “12 Reasons It Should Be Illegal for Doctors Not to Treat Trans People”, we can see how they talk about the law that was created about denying health care to transgender people. Which I do not find at all, the reason why this was created. Transgender people are people like anyone else, if you deny them access it is like denying yourself access because there is no logic in doing that to them. We can see how each person talks about her point of view about this law, and also each one tells her stories. There are many experiences and opinions about how illogical it is to deny access to transgender people. Each of his anecdotes completely surprised me, but I feel that the one that left me with too much impression was that of Simon Chartrand. Which tells about how he was discriminated against in each of the hospitals, even for things like changing his name. He also tells us how he did not have access to enter an observation room and was forced to be in the ER. But the worst was yet to come, when talking about how he experienced sexual harassment from doctors, where one of them who treated him, was bothering him by taking off his clothes and making obscene comments about his body. I feel that this was not at all ethical from the doctor, it was grotesque and I even feel that I should not practice more, because it assures us that other people are not going through the same treatment. The truth is that his story surprised me a lot, it also caused me a lot of fear since you never know when this could happen to you.

In the article by Dána-Ain Davis, Cheyenne Varner & LeConté J. Dill “A Birth Story” we can see how they talk about the experience that LaConte had to go through in her pregnant state. She had chosen the way to give birth to his baby as vaginal birth, and at the time of doing this process the doctor was completely disrespectful. Starting with the fact that she was given way more doses than usual, the doctor even said to LaConte’s face about how they didn’t force her to have a C-section and how she didn’t want to perform a vaginal birth. The poem that she is writing, we can notice all the sadness that she felt in her time, and how there was no one (besides her family and her husband) who could help her. The connections that she made with the films and the articles, is about how women are very impressed, it’s sad to know that there are even some women who are in charge of making you feel even worse because they feel that way. Every person has the right to be able to decide what they want to do with their body, and it is totally horrendous to know that someone else takes advantage of this or even inflicts his authority on things that he should not.

Food Zheng – Reflection #10

With this week’s articles, I identified too much with Williams’s “Too Latina To be Black, Too Black To be Latina” since all my life I have lived in this same uncertainty, the “Too Asian To be Latina, Too Latina To be Asian”. I feel that I have said many times about my race mix, but when I read this article about how she was, her mother tongue was Spanish and she only went to sit with the Latinas but they began to discriminate against her because of her color . This would have happened even if she went with the black people, since she is not familiar with the language that is why I felt very sad. The fact that many people have had to experience this discrimination, just for being or seeing yourself differently. The political identity would have to be able to catalyze each person as it should or even not catalyze them in general. Only get to know people by their feelings or by who they are has a people and not just by their background or how they are physically.

Food Zheng – Discussion #11

In Alicia Garza’s 2020 book “The Power of Identity Politics” you can see how she focuses more on what “identity politics” really is. It talks about how it comes from the same civil rights that could be seen in the article we saw last week from “Combahee River Collective” where they see how women of color fight for the same rights that every woman needs. I also feel like political identity is based on being able to give a name to all those experiences of people who are not cisgender, white or because of their sexual orientation. Identity politics is being able to let people know how they should be defined and how this has not been possible to state in any country. I feel that these readings broadened my knowledge of identity politics due to the fact that they are necessary things to be able to accept and respect each person in the country. It is very sad the fact of the story about the woman and the man, about how he classifies by how I saw it lightly the “race” of the person instead of saying a compliment correctly. Since, it’s not fair to say that you want to see more black people in the movie, because I feel like it’s an unnecessary comment, maybe, to refer to or emphasize a person’s race (and this is contradictory since when we talk about the racism we refer the people who is being racist “whites” or just by their races). In reading Williams, “Too Latina To Be Black, Too Black To Be Latina” it is very sad to know the fact that they always say that the United States is a country of diversity, where you can be accepted without any complications, but Williams tells us his story, where it is totally the opposite of what it should be. The same is connected with political identity, because many times people are not cataloged by their correct label and only labeled by the way they look.

I would like to explore a little more about mixed cultures, the truth is that this week’s articles were very informative for me and at the same time I was able to connect a lot. So I would like to be able to find out more about this and the different stories of people.

Food Zheng – Reflection #9

After reading and viewing this week’s materials I realized all the work that is needed to be able to change the mentality or change the system. In the article of “The Combahee River Collective” we can see everything that black women had to fight to be able to have even a little right in the world. The how, the freedom for women, was only for certain women and not for all in general or about how not seeing themselves with the necessary support from others, they had to find each black or / and lesbian woman to be able to create this move and get your goal. Also, the same thing happened in the video “Paris is Burning” about how homosexual people, transsexuals or just diverse people, got together to create their own modeling studio where anyone was allowed to enter, do anything and show your fashion or be you. It is very pleasing to be able to see how people who do not feel understood by society, take a step forward to not care what others think and be able to be themselves. Show the world that they don’t need anyone’s approval to be what they want to be, because it’s really sad to have to retain your true self in order to be accepted by society.

Food Zheng – Discussion #10

The quote from the article “The Combahee River Collective Statement”, “We might use our position at the bottom to make a clear leap into revolutionary action. If black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.” It is more about the fact of how to obtain the complete freedom of any woman, since in itself, all women, regardless of race, color, or any other characteristic, have the right to be free. Being able to obtain the freedom of women means that any woman has to be free, since in her time, there was a fight over women’s suffrage, but many of these women only sought the rights of white women, instead of seeking women’s rights in general. Being able to destroy the system of oppression that exists among women is the true meaning of freedom. Being able to do, want or even dream of anything that the man says ‘the woman does not have the right to do’.

I feel that it is more about being able to create a change between societies, in The Combahee River Collective, it is more about how to make others see that black women are also necessary rights as is a white woman. It is to be able to let them know that the community of any person of the same race, background or even religion are united for the purpose of being able to be treated as people with their full rights and not as something lower than that. Since, as the article says, no other race/background/religion will fight the battle for you, but it is important to show them the necessary support to reach the goal. I see this method in “Paris is Burning” for the very fact of the golden age, where people who share the same tastes, qualities, or even orientation, came together to be able to be happy and show anyone or even themselves, that they have the same right to do what others do. As we see in the video, where homosexuals, drag queens, or transgender people came together to have their own method of entertainment, which in the video was modeling. Since, at that time, they were not allowed to participate in a modeling contest, they created their own empire in which they could let out their true selves without being afraid of hearing criticism because everyone there was the same, or shared his own passion. Which shows us that even if any person feels that they do not feel like themselves, they will always see a place for them, to be happy and to be able to demonstrate their passion and enjoy with people who truly accept them. What makes me a little sad is the fact that I understand that they feel comfortable with people who share the same passion, but this should not be the case. They should feel comfortable anywhere, whether with similar people or with totally different people, this is the true meaning of what it really is to be free and not be able to express your true self.

I feel that race and gender have a lot to do with capitalism, due to the very fact that it is not centered on who you are, but rather it is centered on your true work or value. The way I see it, capitalism is more individual, being able to do a business, buy a house or study on your own merits and not because the government takes your things from you to give them to someone who needs it. I see it this way, since I come from a communist country, where it is very common to hear the phrase “take from the rich to give to the poor”. Which in one way can be nice, but in another way it is very unfair, since what happens if the rich man reaches that point because of his work and effort, while the poor man does not want to do anything and just wants to take advantage of this fact. That is why I feel that capitalism does not discriminate, I feel that it is more about minding your own business. However, at the same time, I feel that capitalism on gender and race, can be very discriminatory or at least in the past maybe (since, in the present I feel that they no longer pay attention to this fact, and correct me if I’m wrong, please), because I remember before they wouldn’t let a black person own their property, or someone of any other race buy a house even if they were born in the country. I feel that the capitalism of before was very classifying, where the white will always be the one with the most money and power, while the others only serve to work for him.
