Anna Serbina Discussion 14

My initial reaction to the leaked document was irritation and anger. I thought “Well, this county is really going back in time now.” This is one of the very few topics I’m opinionated about. As a woman, I care about my rights. But also as a human, I care about having a choice. I am an immigrant in the US for this reason. I think a lot of immigrants come for freedom of both expression and choice, because of how diverse this country is, and how abundant its market is. So the news made me quite sad and also, confused. I could not understand why would they go back to review something like that. Aren’t there enough issues that are more important?

I learned the details of the draft opinion and the reasoning of the people behind it. They claim that Roe decision conflicts with the Constitution because it “invented a right mentioned nowhere in the Constitution.” They suggest that the decision caused a negative demographic effect, since “a highly disproportionate percentage of aborted fetuses are black.” I wonder if the author of this statement is aware of why it is the case. Speaking of this, I also learned from the short movie “Abortion Helpline, This is Lisa” why exactly reproductive rights are a privilege. The issue is not really about the morals behind abortions, but more about the financial toll of it. People with money can afford to pay out of pocket or to travel to another state/country for their medical services. People who can’t – would become ever poorer. It seems like the whole abortion controversy is not about religion, morals, or principles, but about maintaining and expanding the financial gap. The poorer the nation, the easier it is to rule them how you want.

I think it is important to remember that politics in the US is a pendulum, and at some point, the decisions and laws will go back to being in favor of the opposing group. But we also need to remember that we as a society have the power to either accelerate the change or help to withstand the current conditions until the change is achieved. Rebbeca Gomperts and Women’s Medical Fund are examples.

It’s scary to think if the document wasn’t leaked, no one knows what could happen to woman’s lives. It’s disgusting that they tried to hide it behind our backs not caring about the lives they will kill. It’s beyond disgusting and I feel horrible for the woman who isn’t mentally or financially prepared for a baby.

Hello Anna, I completely agree with you. I’m also an immigrant who came to the U.S. because there’s more freedom and opportunities than in my origin country, there, abortion it’s not legal. Even a law was passed criminalizing abortion, good that it was taken down days after, but the majority of the politicians there are against abortion, which is terrible because there are huge levels of poverty and many people don’t have sex education. Therefore, more young women are likely to have an undesired pregnancy. I hope that there’s a resolution soon and that abortion stays as a constitutional right in the U.S. because women should be able to decide about their own bodies.

Hey Anna, I agree with you able the leaked information, truly disgusting. My thought is that we were moving forward and being better but time and time again we see society trying to back track and it is not okay. There are plenty of cases of women terminating a pregnancy for not being capable enough because their finances. No one should dictate what a women should or shouldn’t do. It baffles me.

Hey, Anna. I had the same reaction. I’ve realized that unless you’re a cis-gendered straight white man, America isn’t the land of the free. We’ve come a long way, but now we’re going back. I agree that it is not a moral issue. The government anticipated a large baby boom as a result of the pandemic, but then that didn’t happen. I think this is their attempt to force people to have more children.

Hi Anna! everything that you just say was right for me, there are people who come to this country to be able to have freedom and express themselves in any way, which could not be seen in the countries where they were. It is so contradictory, that they say that today there is a lot of freedom in everything, but they still continue to exercise power over women. I also agree that the more poor people there are in the country, the easier it will be to exert power over them which is what I feel they really want with this repeal. It is true that laws eventually change, but we must also pay attention and be able to continue fighting for women’s rights.
