Food Zheng – Discussion #14

My opinion about the article “Supreme Court has voted to overturn abortion rights, draft opinion shows” was very surprising for me, since being able to know more about the context and the past that all women have been going through during all these times is really sad. Alito’s argument about how they state what abortion is, knowing that many women do not have family support, or even the man who left them in that state, it has to be their decision to be able to carry out an abortion or not. If they are denied this right, we would be accepting that if a woman is raped and becomes pregnant, she will not be able to abort because she is condemned to reject abortion. From what I could tell, is that with the Roe v. Wad Law are keeping all women who do not feel ready to have a child protected and giving them the option of having an abortion.

While in Baker’s “GLOBAL HEALTH NATIONAL Telemedicine Abortion Provider Rebecca Gomperts Gets Abortion Pills Into the Hands of Those Who Need Them: ‘It’s a Privilege” article, we see how she explains more about the means of abortion. The truth is, I admit that I have been very ignorant on this subject and I was really surprised that there are pills to have an abortion and just as Gomperts comments, it is a much more viable and healthy solution for the mother. Since, I remember that in ancient times abortions were completely sad and painful for women. But now with all the technology and medicine, I find it very interesting that they have developed all of this. What I do find sad is that there are not many pharmacies (although I’m not sure if he was only referring to India exclusively) that have the power to prescribe a woman who is in the process of abortion. As Gomperts said, it’s very curious that he says that being able to prevent abortion is so that there are still more poor people and the government can control them. It is really curious, and at the same time correct in a certain way, since maybe that is why they are doing everything possible so that abortion is not a way, to continue controlling the masses.

I would also like to add that my opinion about this is very confused, since I agree that there are situations in which an abortion has to be given by right. But at the same time, I find it very sad if, for example, parents agree to have a child but after 3 months or so, they regret it and no longer want to have it, so they abort it. I feel that this should no longer be accepted, perhaps, since the 3 months passed with the decision to have the baby, then why the sudden change? I also understand that in many cases it is the financial need that they may not be able to support a baby and that taking them to a shelter is worse because it is not known how the babies would be treated. But also, there are many LGBTQIA people who would not be able to rent a womb, they would be happy to adopt (I apologize if it sounds a bit weird, as I did not quite know how to describe this in other words). In this week’s material, I learned that abortion is not a current issue, it is a law that has been around for a long time due to the fact that women were forced to get pregnant. I feel that the most important thing is to be able to let the woman decide, for the first time they should leave the decision of being pregnant or not to the woman. As in the video, we can see how all the women who call talk about not having enough support, or that not even the person who left them in the state is taking care of them. Therefore, the law Roe v. Wade should continue to be implemented, so that they finally give women the right to do with their bodies.

    Hi Food,

Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed reading your response. I had the same reaction towards the article, very surprising and disappointing above all. The Roe v. Wade law is one that is necessary in this world, not every woman who gets pregnant planned that child or planned on ever getting pregnant. From what I’ve gathered, every one has their own story; they have their own life; they have their own things going on therefore, who is anyone to judge? Who is anyone to decide whether a woman should keep her baby or not? I feel as though, people seem to forget especially men, how hard it is to raise a child and even bare a child in the womb.

Thanks for sharing, this Roe v. Wade law can not be overturned there are to many women that depend on it regardless their circumstance. Plus who gets to tell women what to do with their own body? Why would they want to take our rights.
