Jessica Tapia Discussion 7

Reading through the articles thus far has truly helped me better understand the struggle for equality. From the “one hundred years towards suffrage” To the “untold stories of black women in the suffrage movement.” The stories of these women fighting to be heard and given the right to express their opinion. The accounts of women just being settled as homemakers isn’t all that they do. There is much more intellect in women. Black women that were slaves turned activist is genuinely inspiring. After all the mistreatment they faced, they still managed to find a will to try to change what they had experienced. They were placed in a predicament to be oppressed, but they did not do it. Women like Sojourner Truth delivered one of the most famous abolitionists and women right’s speeches in American history, “Ain’t I a woman?” She was later turned away from voting in 1872. We have another inspiring women Harriet Tubman who was known as an emancipator who led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the underground railroad. Tubman was a supporter of women’s suffrage, giving speeches about her experiences as an enslaved woman. She was the first to push forward the women’s right to vote. Women need to continue to inspire each other and join forces to seek the change that needs to be done to find equality to live a prosperous life.

I agree, one of the things I find most admirable in these activist movements is their ability to persevere and push through defeat. I feel in my own life I am so easily defeated at times. I don’t know that I have the spirit to aggressively push through the way those on the forefront have. Perhaps it’s my impatience, hoping for immediate change. I guess for these people, they see no other path forward for themselves or the world, but it’s still something I find slightly intimidating.

Hello Jessica! I completely agree with you. It is admirable how although these women were in a oppressive situation, they were able to make their voice be heard and fight for black people and women rights. I feel that they had a very strong mindset because even though society was against them, they converted the negativity and rejection towards them into determination

Hi Jessica, I agree with you that women are much more than just “housewives” and I am surprised by this very fact that women in their time despite being oppressed by the system. They realized that they were worth the same as any man or person, so they opened their eyes to be able to fight to obtain what should be theirs naturally. That is why women had the mission of being able to unite and seek the justice they needed. I really liked how you explained your thoughts and the articles, it was really very informative.

Hey Jessica, I like how you specifically mentioned two Black Women who played a major role in the women’s suffrage movement. Such as Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, I could not agree more with you, women do need to motivate each other in order to create a better future.

Hi Jessica, Thank you for your comments, I love the discussion you sparked.
It is so true that it seems unfathomable the will that people have to continue pushing forward. On one hand, I can never imagine what’s it’s like to be in those situations, so maybe you can’t help it when you been through what they went through. On another hand, I am sure there are some people that just have that extra ounce of will and those are the heroes and the legends that lead some of these great revolutions that changed the world we live in.

The stories of both, Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth are extraordinary. To think these were people who were not even looked at as Human, because of the color of their skin AND their gender, is some true brain washing. There is more to go, but it is hopeful to see the insermountable progress that has already taken place!

    Hello Jessica,
I appreciate the great women that inspired such a big movement and made history. When it comes to the freedom of women i do not know if i would have been able to push through as hard as women back in the day would. Maybe it is all about perspective and perseverances but it is truly inspiring.
