I feel like privilege is something given to us without having to go through the obstacles and earning actually earning it. It’s something that many people have and don’t deserve and it’s also what many people don’t have and do deserve it. Privilege is a benefit that many people take for granted and some actually take advantage of (if that makes sense). It bizarre that privilege is defined by the color of our skin, when in fact we are human yet unique in our own ways. Peggy went in depth about white privilege as a white women herself with these benefits. She mentioned that white people don’t believe themselves as oppressors. We need to understand our privileges and take advantage of what we do have no matter the color, race, or religion. A privilege i would say I have is definitely having good education. My parents did the best they could to support 4 of us from the roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on the table, which a lot of people may not have any of these things. Which always reminds me to be grateful for what I do have now and not what I wish I had.
In the reading “Oppression” by Frye, I feel she made good points. For example, she went and mentioned on how from childhood to men not to cry because it makes them masculine or weak. I understand now that oppression really does exist in our society and being catagorized by who we are and what we choose to be whether that’s by our color, ethnicity, and gender. Oppression is exertion of power and or control by a group or individual of power to those who don’t.
Hi Jazmine, I agree that privilege is given to those who don’t deserve it, and many take advantage of it. I agree that privilege shouldn’t be based on skin color. White people who aren’t aware of their privilege are part of the problem. It’s like what Donny Miller said, “In the age of information, ignorance is a choice.”
Hi Jazmine, The truth is that I think the same as you about how privilege is a benefit that very few people take advantage of, since many times they focus on the bad things that are happening in their lives. I say the same, sometimes the privilege is not having to oppress any person, it is like something in your life that appears without having made an effort to obtain it. Yes, every person who feels that he has everything he needs in her life, should feel grateful and not just think about what he lacks. Society is a part of life that focuses on suffocating and oppressing anyone who is different, because they feel they have the right to control or exercise power over someone they shouldn’t.
Hello Jazmine, I can understand the privileges that some of us have in a suitable living space. Many people aren’t aware of this privilege because they might not see it that way. Taking the initiative to become more self-aware is a step that some of us can take to understand better what has been handed to us without any efforts to obtain what we have. Not all of us see it just one way. Thanks for Sharing, Jazmine.
Hi Jazmine, thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like you make an effort to be aware of the comforts you have and to make sure to be grateful for them. A roof over our head, education, and health is something that everyone should have and does deserve, but sadly a lot of people do not. Thanks for your point of view!
Hello Jazmine, I understand what you’re saying about privilege, where privilege is guaranteed for advantages and some take disadvantage of it. People use what the real definition of the word privilege is and they abuse it. I believe everyone deserves privilege no matter what race, gender, or sexuality you are.
Hello Jazmine,
I understand your thoughts on what privilege is, i definitely agree that it is absurd that privilege is define by the color of our skin. I believe that privilege and oppression go hand in hand because some people do not believe they’re privilege so they never see the struggle of one that actually is not privilege and those who oppress do not believe they’re oppressing someone and never think of those that are being oppressed. Most of the time both subjects are ignored for ones own benefit.
Hello Jazmine,
I agree with one of what you said that “privilege is something given to us without having to go through the obstacles and earning it”, totally agree because privilege is free and we take advantage of it not knowing that other people don’t have the privileges we have. As I do agree with that even in today’s society oppression exists.
