Hi everyone. My name is Miranda(pronouns she/her/hers) this is my third semester at BMCC. I am a mom of 1 and work full time. I am currently in pursuit of my associates degree in liberal arts (should be human services) something went wrong with my advisory. I will fix the situation shortly. I do believe the classes I am taking need to be taken anyway so I am not wasting time at-least. I work as a para for the DOE and am required to go to school to keep my job in good standing. Eventually, I would like to venture out of my current job and do something human services related. Family , education and honesty is what I value most. I dislike blatant disrespect more than anything. Currently I am taking this course as a requirement in pursuit of my degree, it peeked my interest most. I hope to learn many new insightful facts I can grow from and take with me on my life journey. One thing I have learned about college is you learn so many things you never would know went on in the world because no one ever talks about it. Looking forward to learning a lot!

    Hello Miranda

I am a case manager full time but on the days I am off I am also a sub para, i just recently picked the job up and expected it to be a walk in the park given my work background, Boy was i wrong, i feel i am consistently learning new ways to work with young people and it has been a challenge to work with children who are used to expressing themselves in a harmful way. I would love some types if you have any. I have a new found respect for DOE workers and even larger respect for mothers. Nice to meet you.

Hey Giselle. I agree, being a para is not a job where you can just take it easy lol. As a sub it is a shock because you just learn as you go. I wish I could give you specific advice but every kid is different and it would never cover all of them. I try and approach them optimistically its also hard as a sub if you don’t really have a relationship with the child and their use to their regular para or always seeing different sub-paras I will say while you are there for support there are staff trained to help with harmful behaviors (guidance counselor) and when it is beyond your control for sure have the teachers, office or whoever contact them!! Also pick and choose your battles with the kids as to not over exert your patience because it can be a lot for sure. I hope this helps! Nice to meet you too!!

Hello, I have worked with a 7th grade student who has behavior problems, which was my first time and I just started working with the DOE last month. I don’t know how long you have been a para I just gave him his space. I knew beforehand he was subconscious about having a para. I am no expert but try to find out what the behavior triggers are to see if that helps or if there is a behavior plan in place.
