In the film created by kd hall, ” untold stories of black women,” she discussed Ida b wells on her achievements and the fight she went through to get equality for African American women. Ida was one of the founders of the national association for the advancement of people of color. Ida embodied everything that the suffrage movement was especially black women. she later became a co-owner and wrote for the Memphis free speech. Later Susan b Anthony quickly began collaborating on the women’s suffrage movement, which included fighting to end slavery and property ownership of women. Together with women were fighting and demanding change in the system. These past generations of women have come a long way. However, women still face some of the same issues, like holding themselves back, but they are still trying to break the glass and speak their minds.

I’m going to be honest I didn’t get to read the other two complete readings because since I started this one aroused a lot of interest in me was “The male paradox”. This is because Jackson, who is the author, is in charge of showing us everything about the porn business. I learned something new which was that I didn’t know that porn didn’t start with men and women, but with men for men. It is mentioned
“The idea that consumers of porn can masturbate and have orgasms with that kind of treatment of women and that it doesn’t affect their attitudes towards women… in their lives is more of a fantasy than anything the most creative porn writers can conjure” (186, Jackson). This shows how, according to the creators of this content, they say that the viewers only watch porn to satisfy themselves personally and that, for example, if a man watches porn of both sexes, this will not affect his way of seeing women and how to treat her in real life. . It’s true, from what I’ve heard why I shouldn’t say this here but before I used to listen when my cousins talked about it and they themselves said things like “I see them when I get horny but I know that all that is acted”. However, for consumers who do not know that this is not real, it influences them because they create a movie in their head and all of this in one way or another is reflected with women.

Lizbeth Molina Reflection 6

In the video created by KD Hall, “Untold Stories of Black Women,” she discusses the life of Ida B Wells and the great efforts and lengths she went to fight for the equality of African Americans, especially women. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Although born into slavery, she was freed by the emancipation proclamation during the American Civil War and later became a co-owner and wrote for the Memphis free speech and headlight newspaper. A white mob later destroyed the office because of how well known her reporting was becoming nationwide. After 1892, the Alpha Suffrage Club was created in Chicago, the first and most influential black women’s suffrage club in the state. Ida B Wells immediately set out to mobilize and register black men and women voters. When asked to march at the back in 1913, she refused and made her way to the front, taking her place where she belonged. The article /timeline “One Hundred Years toward Suffrage” made me realize how far women have come in their efforts to gain equal rights, but the glass isn’t fully broken. Until 1965, African Americans were granted the full right to vote. It wasn’t until 1923 that the National Woman’s Party first proposed the Equal Rights Amendment, which would eliminate discrimination based on gender. And yet was never ratified till this day. The fight for women has been going on for some time, but it indeed should have started sooner. And yet we are still marching and demanding the same thing.

IMANE CHAABA

I honestly enjoyed the readings of this week, Katz Jackson pointed out chapter ten from his book some serious questions about how the way men in the pornography industry treat young girls and prostitutes influence the way they treat women in general. He confirmed that these types of questions are the ones that most people are not ready to hear their answers to. Women have been objectified through the past and have been suffering in silence while the number of rape is leveling up in our society. Pornography is such a harmful industry where women’s rights are being disrespected. Women’s sexual freedom is being victimized and men are doing nothing but degrading women’s rights. It was very difficult to read about what happened to those young ladies who have been played and scammed by men in the “BangBus” series. It is a shame to see these men taking advantage of the fact that girls are willing to give everything for money and this is exactly what Clair Golberg Moses talked about in her article. Golberg Moses mentioned that women in the past centuries have been socialized separately from men and disrespected by laws. It was no room for women in education, the workplace, or even banks to get some financial help which lead them to sell themselves as an object. It was never women’s fault as many of us think, it was society’s fault for letting this men’s domination take full control. She also talked about how the media played a huge role in this case by misrepresenting the image of feminists. Feminists should be represented as powerful, courageous women who stand up for their rights, not women who are looking for attention or have no future or mental issues.

Aleah Alamo – Reflection 6

This week’s material reflects our conversation about the patriarchy and opression. The 19th-century movement for suffrage was the result of women’s opression. Women were forced to have to fight for equality. Our society was built around patriarchy. Women were restricted and had rights taken from them like the right to vote and equal opportunity. Patriarchy was meant to continue opression and maintain male superiority. During the suffrage movement women rebelled against the patriarchy, demanding their rights and equality. Feminism and women participating in activism popularized. The suffrage movement symbolized a breaking point where women and other oppressed groups were fighting against the system, fighting against their oppressor. Feminism and activism were used to expose, challenge and destabilize hierarchies and fight for social justice. Women rallying together demanding change was an impactful statement, especially during a time where women were made to be extremely reliant to men. The movement was an important stepping stone to breaking the patriarchy system and gaining more independence and rights for women. While there is still more progress to be made, the suffrage movement serves as motivation and inspiration to continue activism and protest.

Reading Reflection 6

The video, ‘Untold Stories of Black Women” mainly focused on the achievements and actions of Ida B.Wells. Susan B. Anthony is also featured. Ida Wells was one of the founders of the NAACP and an early leader in the civil rights movement. She focused on African-American rights, especially for women. Susan B. Anthony is a white abolitionist who fought to end slavery and the property ownership of women, but has become controversial in this day as she had said that women deserve the vote more than black men. Some white women began to draw comparisons between the enslavement of black people and the oppression that women face in a patriarchal society. Which I think is quite an inappropriate comparison.

The first event talked about in “One Hundred Years Towards Suffrage” is the Declaration of indepence. Abigail Adams requests that her husband John “remember the women”, and in response he almost intentionally and mockingly, does the opposite and is one of the men responsible for the Declaration of Independence stating “All men are created equal” Right from the START of our nation, women are being ignored and othered. It’s said that the use of  “man/men” is just a default, but it was insidiously used as a political/legal loophole to deny women of their rights. This exclusive language continued through 1868 with the Fourteenth amendment, which was the first to define ‘citizens’ and ‘voters’ as ‘male’. It isn’t until 1920 that the Nineteenth amendment was adopted nationwide, which granted everyone the right to vote, regardless of gender/sex. But this is just the beginning, as women of color were still not guaranteed the right to vote.

note: i know this is late, but i still wanted to share my thoughts on the article/video 🙂

Kayla Santel Reading Reflection 6

The most interesting piece out of the three readings for this week hands down was The Macho Paradox. The author Jackson goes into grave detail about how the porn industry was initially crafted by men for men, and that even in today’s world women porn directors make up a very small portion of the industry in comparison to men.

“Pornography tells lies about women, but it tells the truth about men” (182 Jackson). When I first read this quote I thought it was more insinuating about the fact that for women both porn and masturbation are seem as taboos, but for men they’re almost everyday commodities and very casual parts of conversation. But as I continued to read I was interested to find out it was actually explaining that porn capitalizes off of this concept of fantasy women. This is something I was already aware of, but in the aspect of body standards and beauty standards. However, the author in this case is more so talking about the treatment of these fantasy women in porn and how that can escalate into real life.

“The idea that consumers of porn can masturbate and have orgasms to that kind of treatment of women and not have it affect their attitudes toward the women…in their lives is more a fantasy than anything the most creative porn writers can conjure up” (186 Jackson). For some reason I never really connected the dots that the way men treat women in porn could have some tie to how they do in real life. Women are more or less almost always portrayed as submissive and subordinate in porn, like they only exist for one thing. To go on further and somehow connect that to sexual violence also made me really sit back and think. “Sexual violence is common in our society not because there are so many sick men, but because we socialize normal boys to be sexually dominant and normal girls to be sexually subordinate” (188 Jackson).

Heylee Soto

After reading the article and watching the suffrage video, the manner of being there for your household, your family, and kid of forget about yourself. Women’s suffrage became a huge priority for women during this time; especially for the right to vote. Women of the middle and upper classes created three groups that were most important to the women’s suffrage movement. thinking about I can’t picture myself being able to be so strong how these women were in this time era. I can’t picture a life where I don’t have anything for myself because I have to live for my family and household and mostly I definitely don’t picture myself being told how to live and being demanded. There are some men who were courageous enough to not act like the majority of men in this era and they actually went out of their way to help out these women. after learning about this era I have learned about so much history nobody ever speaks about. It was truly an eye-opener and makes me grateful about the era I live in today and ton see that we woman now are so much more powerful. we earn our privileges in our own way. y working hard in a totally different way these women did in the past. This documentary shows the oppression of women in our history. Many women spoke up no a=matter the judgment they woul=dve received after. The women were role models to others because they had l=alot of courage and power to do this. We know that some rights haven’t been achieved but with time, progress, and working as a team anything is possible.

Reflection 6

Bearing the whole responsibility of looking after the house and family, women during the women suffrage era must have endured so much pain and some kind of confusion. I could not imagine myself living in such a time. I would have to do what I am told and never have anything for myself. It is very refreshing to find out that there many considerate people including some men who went out of their way to offer help to women who were unable to speak for themselves in such circumstances. Untold stories of women in the suffrage women are truly educative and path opener for others like me who are unaware of some of what are predecessors had to go through to earn us certain privileges we somehow take advantage of today. This documentary digs up details on how women in the past endured oppression. Ida B. Wells, Abigail Scott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton amongst many others stood their grounds and made sure their voices heard no matter the circumstance. I admire such will power and confidence. As stated, that certain privileges and rights are still yet to be achieved, but even with regards to that, it takes time. So much has been achieved, and so much is yet to be achieved but we will get there.

Yin Lin Reflection 6

After finished reading The Macho Paradox, I feel sad for the generations growing up with accessible free porn videos. It is harmful and unhealthy products from the toxic sex/rape culture also it impacts their ideas about sex. Would people learn sex from porn today or people have sex first then they would form the idea about sex? Would they enjoy it naturally or they enjoy it just because that they were being told by the porn they watched that’s the best?

A few decades the mainstream opinions pay more attention on prostitutes, girls who involved with porn or even it is a private sex-tape. The mainstream focus on how girls turning “bad” but never question what motivate the porn market. Because they know the reason–the reason is that there is huge profit behind this industry also men would always pay/welcome it. Wherever the profit is, wherever the market is. Since it is the culture under patriarchy, of course the attention would be removing from men to women as usual. That’s why women became the one to be blaming and taking the shame.

Another concern is, how much influence that these sex-violence content related porn would lead to real sex violence in reality? How much it would impact people’s mind about treating women after watching these dehumanized girls and women porns? Private personal sex life is always a grey zone to discuss about-how to identify the sex-violence while it was happening during sex? And according to the chapter I read, even during the processing of making porn, girls and womens would probably face uncomfortable sex-related acting/actions would cause body pain and mental pain too. How to protect girls and women’s rights in their personal sex lives or when they working at sex/sex content industries?
