Yin Lin Discussion 14

I feel upset, disappointed, heartbroken after I knew the leaked document about Roe v. Wade. It shows us that what the reality is and as people who living in New York City, an liberal place, we only see how New York City is but we forget how the rest of United States is or even how the rest of the world is. How we thought and how we behave and how the world really is are different things. And actually there is only 6 countries can be considered gender equal and United States of course is not belonging to any of them.

What makes me angry also that people consider themselves Pro-Life but they just care about the existence of the babies, if the babies is not dying by abortion, that is good enough on their ends; but if the babies didn’t have a well environment to grow up or if the babies didn’t have well health care technique to be born, they don’t care. Which is ridiculous for me also make me doubt about that how much they care about life.

It is important that to have the right to abortion, and at the same time, we can’t just let women to take care of the responsibilities. Their partners also need to help and take care of it and protect them.

We fought for the rights so many years and we shouldn’t let it back to the old days. Yes birth rate is dropping, but if only forcing banning the abortion right instead of offering a better environment, better deliver health care conditions plus well grow up places and education resources, I do really doubt about what good this would bring to us. It would increase illegal abortion accident and it could cause more people pass away due to accidents. It also would cause other health issues caught by unsuccessful pregnancies—pregnancies are complicated and it could cause different illness for the mothers. Even for people who want to be the mothers sometimes they have to choose abortions due to the pregnancies could bring more risky accidents for them.

Lizbeth Molina Discussion 14

My initial reaction to the leaked document about Roe v. Wade was that I felt heartbroken. I was genuinely so upset because I felt hopeless, and like any time women take a step forward, we’re dragged 100 steps back against our will. After crying on and off, I felt nothing but anger, especially after reading other women’s stories online about their abortion experiences and their thoughts on the injustice it would be to take the right of abortion from us. It takes a lot of courage to share your story online, but I’m thankful to every woman who has done so because it’s helped me understand people’s pain in different situations. Whether a woman doesn’t want to birth a child or can’t have one because of medical reasons, or whatever the reason may be, women should have the right to decide what they will do with their own bodies. And I believe that what I do with my own body is my own business, and if I choose to share my story, I’m allowed to do that too, but that does not entitle others to share their opinion on my body.

While reading the “Brief History,” I learned that the ban on abortions dates back to times of slavery. If these women had children, they would be considered property of the enslavers. This makes the recent news even more disturbing. In “Helpline, This is Lisa,” some really upsetting stories were shared of women who could not afford to pay for an abortion and called a helpline for funding. “Abortion funds nationwide struggle to fill the financial gap for people affected by the Hyde Amendment.” It’s very cruel that abortion can seem like an option only for the wealthy. In the Ms. article, Rebecca Gomperts talks about her work to provide women with safe abortion medication. In my eyes, she is a hero, willing to dedicate her time and life to helping people. She’s ready to fight for something she wholeheartedly believes is a human right. Aid Access was created because the request for help from women in the U.S was overwhelming. How wild that we are meant to be “free,” but that doesn’t seem to apply to women, or at least it doesn’t apply to the non-wealthy ones. Since it was founded in 2018, Aid Access has cared for 30,000 people. It is legal for Gomperts to prescribe abortion pills as it’s also legal for them to be shipped from India to the U.S. She mentions, “one of the problems in the U.S. is that there’s so much legal injustice anyway. Many people are in jail despite their innocence because they are forced to admit to something they never did because they know they don’t have a chance to win a court case. So all these things are intertwined with each other.” And I agree entirely with this statement; the system seems to be designed against us, we’re constantly set up for failure, and I’ve had enough of it.

Kayla Santel Discussion 14

I remember originally when I found out about the Roe v. Wade leaked document it was on twitter through the trends, and then on Tiktok. But for some reason both times I just assumed that it was fake news, that there was a typo somewhere, that maybe some professional photoshop major had created a fake document to generate some interesting news.

“The immediate impact of the ruling as drafted in February would be to end a half-century guarantee of federal constitutional protection of abortion rights and allow each state to decide whether to restrict or ban abortion … No draft decision in the modern history of the court has been disclosed publicly while a case was still pending.” One thing about this whole situation that has left me confused is how did anyone even get access to a top secret drafted document and upload it for the whole internet to see? I also can’t grasp any understanding as to why all of a sudden in the year 2022 we’re trying to delegalize abortion. It seriously does feel like we as a human race are taking a huge step backward rather than forward and it’s also somewhat comical in a very synical way because America is known for being ‘progressive,’ however you choose to define that.

One thing I learned about is the Hyde Amendment, I had no idea there was a law in place to prevent government funding for abortions for women, although it doesn’t necessarily shock me because even getting affordable and helpful health care is a struggle for most people. Another thing that was newly introduced to me was the concept of an abortion hotline, of course I’m familiar with suicide hotlines but this concept is very different.

At this time, I think it’s really important to keep in mind that there will always be ways for people to get abortions, even if it’s not always necessarily legal. I just think it’s ridiculous to take away the right for someone to be able to obtain the help they need because of the opinions of someone else who’s not even going through the same thing as them. In both the short film and documentary, all the people who were against abortion had never actually been put in a situation where they would need to consider getting one. So it felt very ingenuine to hear people speak about problems that they’ve never had and try to force their own input on the situation.

Merichel Almonte. Discussion 14

In the article “Roe v. Wade” it is mentioned that the issue of abortion will be an issue that will not finish being debated because it has a lot of pros and cons. Telemedicine abortion is protected by the Dutch doctor Rebecca Gomperts. Which is used to provide help to girls and women who in other hospitals are denied an abortion to unwanted babies. This has created so many opinions because some are against the fact that it is killing an innocent baby, others that it can affect the mother regarding her health and others that yes because if they are products, for example, of a rape, the girl or the woman yes. You don’t want to, you shouldn’t have it because it will remind you of that painful moment in your life. A viable fetus is said to start from 24 weeks, which is equivalent to 6 months. Some even claim that a fetus can survive to 22 or 23 weeks.

The documents show that the Supreme Court could overturn Roe vs. Wade. They have an article that protects a pregnant woman’s freedom to choose an abortion without excessive government restrictions. I think this is good in a certain way because that way many raped girls will not bring unwanted children into the world and moreover both being children, the mother inexperienced. However, with legal abortion, many women who did have sex with its consent abort simply because they do not want responsibility, to continue with an active sexual life without the commitment of being mothers.
In the documentary, “Vessel”, it is observed how they are in favor of it being legal because each woman does what she wants with her body.

DISCUSSION 14

IMANE CHAABA

I started off with the short documentary video “Helpline, This is Lisa” about abortion and it seems phone calls from women who need financial help don’t stop at all. There are plenty of women who are seeking medical funds to end their pregnancies. This is a very clear message from the government that only wealthy people have access to abortion and that’s the reason why half of the people in the country are living in a poor conditions with their kids. Now, I understand clearly how bad is the hyde amendment in the U.S and how it made a specific condition on when the federal money can be used for abortion. As I read, federal money must be only used for abortion if the woman is at a risk to die or if she was raped. The question here is, what if the women commit suicide after they find out that can’t afford an abortion, or what if they will die later or sooner with their kids because of hunger. There are many consequences that laws and rules like this can cause and it is not only financial issues but psychological problems that can play with women’s minds.

Learning about the supreme court and how it has voted to overturn abortion rights has opened up my thoughts about how the decision was first made. In my opinion, Samuel Alito is very strong about his opinion and what he is bringing to the court as evidence and consequences of the Roe v. Wade decision by saying that Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. We can’t deny the fact the unborn baby has the same right that must be protected as the alive babies or people in general. It is the same thing that happens in cases in which the parents murder their child and that’s because they were never feeling as if they are ready for parenting. From that point of view, I can see why they want to change decisions in order to prevent accidents like this. The unborn child has no voice and the government and people are his voice. Babies must be protected and at the same have the minimum conditions at least to grow and live better. We don’t want a world where any woman will have sex with no protection outside the marriage life and then blame the government for not funding her abortion. This is my opinion and this is how I see things. I want to end the discussion board with an open thought.

I think it always depends on the situation. Let us see first if both lives of the mother and child will be put at risk, so it needs immediate action to save lives. It’s a Yes, However if the reason is too personal and does not want to carry the responsibility as a mother, I do condemn that action because we are not in the position to take away someone’s life little whether it is a small or big life. And it is a form of crime.  Our decisions will always be reflected in the end. We may not be able to see God physically, but I know every action we made surely accountable on the day of judgment. The legalization of abortion has been a hotly debated topic for many decades. Many
people are either for the legalization of abortion or against it, there are not many people who are able to see both sides of the issue. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary abortion is defined as “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.” Most abortions happen within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is during this time that many people believe that a woman is carrying a fetus and aborting the pregnancy during this period it is before any crucial development begins to occur. However, I find this not to be true. A baby’s heart begins to start beating just after 6 weeks of gestation. It is at this moment that there is a true living, breathing human inside of a woman, feeding off of her in order to survive

Salima Zack – Discussion 14

Decades after, the fight regarding whether abortion should be legalized continues to have us on our toes. The case of “Roe v. Wade” is one may have predicted would resurface because, as far as society is concerned, the issue with abortion is going to be a continuous debate with opposing yet somehow reasonable views. Telemedicine abortion, seemingly an aid heavily backed by Dutch Physician Rebecca Gomperts serves to provide services to women/ girls who are been denied the access to legally rid themselves of unborn babies that are mostly unwanted. In the documentary, “Vessel”, we observe some chaos as a number of people protest to have women abort their babies at their will and most importantly safely. It is described as a symbol of freedom and human rights to have women take these actions.

From the times of our forefathers, abortion has always been branded as a sin/ a taboo and illegal. I am not trying to be condescending but both sides have truths to their story and will be considered as one of the many reasons why this debate is still ongoing and will for a long time be. People say abortion is bad because it is seen as a crime, as lives of fetuses are being taken. It is said that a viable fetal starts from 24 weeks, which is equivalent to 6 months. Some even state that a fetus may survive at 22 or 23 weeks. “Having an abortion is the same as committing murder”, especially if the fetus exceeds 20 weeks. The other side also have very valid points as to why they would support abortion. Every individual knows what is best for their bodies and would go extra miles to see to that expectation. If an individual has a sexual intercourse but did not have any plans of having a child, she might want to have an abortion, that’s if she gets pregnant as a result – to rid herself of the pain of having to change or even ruin the plans she must have set for herself.

Daily, women are seeking help to have access to medical procedures to safely remove fetus from their wombs because as we observe from the documentary, the women are broken and are still trying to find themselves, their situations do not favor them having kids. The Hyde Amendment has caused a lot of disadvantages, in the sense that enough funding is not put in place to help these women who are in desperate need of financial support, they are fully certain of. The Abortion Helpline, “This is Lisa” sought to provide as much funding as possible to women who would like to have abortions. Women who holding onto their sad stories and unfortunate situations.

Finale! This was such a great class and I am honored to have experienced it with you all. Special thanks to Prof. Waychoff for providing us with heavy yet enlightening readings and films to further our knowledge on these essential topics. But let’s get into this week… I wanted to start off with Bell Hook’s stance in which she states “One cannot be anti-choice and feminist.” Simply because women’s rights are the foundation of feminism, I am angry and fearful of our government’s control over women’s bodies- and this does not only account for cis-gendered women. There is a major lack of trust between citizens of the United States and the supreme court in general but now regarding reproductive rights, the people who are implementing these decisions are taking it too far.

I believe my initial reaction to the leaked document was the literal fact that it was leaked. The Politico article we read states “No draft decision in the modern history of the court has been disclosed publicly while a case was still pending. The unprecedented revelation is bound to intensify the debate over what was already the most controversial case on the docket this term.” It is not fair that the supreme court works in such secrecy when finalizing cases before they are released to the public eye. The person who leaked this is a hero- because they knew that what was going on behind closed doors is deceitful and dangerous. I am angry and scared. There are so many complications that can happen during pregnancy and no man could ever understand the physical and mental pain a woman experiences during this.

In the film, we see the people working for the abortion hotline trying their best to provide funding for women who cannot afford the procedure, and they will help cover as much as they can (especially because insurance covers nothing). It pains me to hear that these women already have such limited access to resources, and have to go to third-party operations in order to be truly helped. I want to state again that insurance does NOTHING, in other countries, there is access to free if not universal healthcare for citizens to be protected. The last thing anyone should have to worry about is meeting deductibles, or to refrain from calling an ambulance because of the cost- but in this situation, no woman should have to let financial hardships control their decision for their body.

We also read about Rebecca Gomperts and Aids Access- which is a sigh of relief from our other reading and the video. Gomperts provides contraception from outside of the United States legally- helping over 30,000 people safely complete an abortion from the comfort of their own home. I am inspired by her strength and compassion to help those in need and hope that overturning Roe v. Wade does not affect this.

I know a lot of us are scared right now, or maybe optimistic that the people in charge will do the right thing. Regardless, it is classes, communities, lectures, and groups similar to GWS100 that are setting the tone for our futures. The more we talk about our rights and reproductive rights, the more room there is for real change. As Bell Hooks said, anyone, can fit feminism into their existing lifestyle. We must continue this conversation with our friends and family, and do more than repost an Instagram infographic. Change starts with a controversial conversation, followed by activism, therefore we should not be afraid.

Discussion 14 / Finale

Hello classmates and professor it was a wonderful semester discussing different kinds of topics and learning new things. Seeing things from many different perspectives reading our weekly discussions. For some reason I had a feeling for the  grand Finale We was going to have a discussion about Abortions. As the professor asked, I will try to stay away from proselytizing.

Well starting off with Roe vs Wade. According to Politico Information about Roe Vs Wade has been leaked. It’s not the best information either. Its information that could separate the people cause a lot of emotions like OPPRESSION. The leaked documents show that the Supreme court might overturn Roe vs Wade. According to the article “the 1973 decision guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights” this protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction.

My reaction to the leaked documents in the article is feeling Fear for women. I’m Surprised. I find it unfair that women are being oppressed and losing rights to make their own decisions about abortion. The things I learned in the Opinion of The Court it seems like they feel like ‘Roe was abusing Judicial Authority”. The court also feels like the constitution makes no reference to abortion. So now the Conversion of Roe vs Wade has to be brought back up. It’s basically Reviving old problems and making them worse to me. In 1973 I felt like they came to an understanding and slowly we made regulations to make things not as gruesome and inhumane to a Fetus life. Anyways these views from the court leaves things unsolved and still a hot topic in 2022. If Roe vs Wade get overturned things will not be good. I think a lot of women will be furious, it won’t really stop abortions as people will find a way. It will be illegal, but someone will open an office somewhere private and try to continue giving women Abortions. With that being said I don’t even think its a safe idea to go on with over turning abortions.

I then went on to read another article that’s almost like a solution or another option to take.  A lady named “Rebecca Gomperts Gets Abortion Pills Into the Hands of Those Who Need Them.” She provided many women with apparently safe abortion pills. The organization is Australian based but works in the united states. It is affordable being 150 dollars. She has a long history of providing these abortion pills to many women.. Sadly as time went by in 2019”, the Trump administration’s FDA sent Dr. Gomperts a warning letter demanding that she stop mailing abortion pills to people in the U.S.” Now she has a problem but doesn’t wasn’t to stop helping people access to her product. Gomperts provided medication abortion to over 30,000 people in the U.S. since 2018.  Many people found her product beneficial and safe. Imagine the people who could need it in the future or how bigger it would have grown. Carrie Baker then proceeded to have an interview with Rebecca Gomperts. Asking her interesting questions to understand her intentions, goals and future plans and how her product works.

I found the 13 minute  Abortion Helpline video informing. Focusing on many sad aspects of not even being able to afford an abortion. How some try to help and how deep it can get when their only an amount of time.

From reading all of these articles, watching the documentary and the announcement the professor wrote.  The government is trying to make decisions for what a female chooses to do with her uterus. Women are basically at risk of losing rights to certain options in healthcare. If one right is taken away, who knows what other things they can be stripped of. It’s important to keep in mind how women feel these decisions the government is trying to make is Oppressing women.

Aleah Alamo – Discussion 14

The leaked document about Roe v. Wade was shocking but at the same time not! Abortion has always been a hot topic in America and very polarizing, either you are totally for it or totally against it. You hear a lot of the time that illegalizing abortion is part of the Republican agenda, but I don’t think that is completely true. Yes, the majority of Republicans and red states are against abortion, but political party is not the only thing that dictates this opinion. Religion, moral beliefs, and misinformation are big factors that affect people’s opinions on abortion as well.

More recently after Trump’s election into office, the republican party became extremely illiberal and extremist. Corrupt, racist, sexist, and misogynistic views and opinions were overwhelmingly forced into politics and media. Heightening these shared views and making the discussion about abortion hostile again. We’ve gone through this before with the feminist movement and the passing of Roe v. Wade. The current social and political climate is causing many issues to be brought up, re-opening the wounds in our country and government. (*Also, not all republicans support Trump or are against abortion, I wanted to mention Trump because his run in office kick-started this re-discussion of Roe v. Wade)

As this week’s reading and Professor Waychoff’s announcement pointed to, the main issue that is being overshadowed in the Roe v. Wade debate is that abortion is a right. The argument should not be about whether it is morally right or not, the only focus should be on whether or not it is a right the government should be able to strip away from people. We have to keep in mind: abortion being illegalized will not stop abortions from happening. Abortion being legal ensures people will be able to safely get the procedure done. The reversal of Roe v. Wade is absolutely oppressive. The government knows this would put many people’s lives at risk but is continuing the discussion to cater to the corrupt and sexist people in office. There is no law that holds power over a man’s body so why should it not be the same for women.

This current Roe v. Wade issue makes me think – why do women have to fight so hard for rights, safety, and respect. Roe v. Wade is meant to protect women and those who need access to a safe medical procedure, so why is the government trying to reverse it. Things like this make it clear and remind us of how oppressive our government is. Its current structure was built to oppress and the efforts to reverse Roe v. Wade show how hard this system is trying to stop progress and liberation.
