This is Bantu Embrace by Mikela Henry-Lowe and she is interested in the representation of Black women in society. Her portrait paintings defy the overwhelmingly negative portrayal of Black women in the media. It is very common for the media to portray only Black pain rather than excellence, her goal is to change that. I love the color palette and geometric shapes used, the heart shape lined in her hair is beautiful. The highlighting of the skin tone is so important as well, love the brush strokes and use of texture. I feel like it sends a very powerful message.

IMANE CHAABA

I choose this image specifically because it is related to some of the subjects we learned during the semester. Women are the main character in this piece. This piece was created in 1989 by the artist: Barbara Kruger Untitled ( your body is a battleground). This piece was made for the women’s March on Washington in 1989 to protest against the anti-abortion. This piece describes how women should be feeling and now how the world makes them feel about their own bodies. It gives the confidence to show power and strength.

I like this film and article about “Latinos who were represented in the Vietnam War and their families” because they are fight for what they think are they rights.
Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and others were among the ethnic groups that fought in the war. Ethnic families with a good background, on the other hand, did not have to fight. They registered in good schools and sent the rest of their classmates to fight in the war on their behalf.
Discrimination was felt on the war as well as by veteran families at home. At the battleground, there was a lot of racism. Veteran families are protesting in the streets even though they are at war. Veterans found it difficult to fight militarily for their nations on the battlefield while also fighting for citizenship and equal rights. Even so, the veterans had to return home and continue the war with their families. Latinos began to believe that they were being exploited, which prompted anti government protests in the community.

You should recognize that we all have the same rights because we are all humans, and it now tends to depend on your identity.Your character has advanced.

The fact that they were mistreated and subjected to fighting and colonization of their lands led to this guerrilla war. I realized that no matter what time of year it is, we must all fight for our rights so that we can say in the morning, “I am Latina, and I am proud to be one.”

Pablo Picasso- Guernica

I chose this because it was a reaction to the war that was going on during that time. I believe it was during world war 2. The painting includes a woman screaming, and a dead baby being held by a screaming mother. I feel like this whole painting depicts what it was like to live during the war and how devastating it was. I wouldn’t say it’s disturbing to view but it makes me feel uneasy. Also, the artist chose gray tones which makes it feel more uncanny.

I honestly always found  Rosie the Riveters “ We can Do it Poster “ bold and interesting. I also do have questions about it. This poster was made in 1943 by J. Howard Miller. It was made to boost female worker image & importance. This was also made around the time of WW2. Factories and shipyards during World War 2  had plenty of women helping and taking over positions and roles that men would be doing. I like that they are advertising the point women are capable and strong .. breaking them aways from being seen as a  housewife or not strong enough. I wonder though why the face of the famous advertisement is a white female. it makes me wonder Was only white females helping in the WW2 .. was their women of other race who helped ?

The “What Were You Wearing?” Survivor Art Installation originated at the University of Arkansas in 2013. Created by Jen Brockman and Dr. Mary Wyandt-Hiebert, the project was inspired by Dr. Mary Simmerling’s poem,What I Was Wearing.

I choose this art project because I saw it on news a few years ago and when I read the assignment requirement this week, this project is the first one came to my mind. Due to slut shaming, the society put the responsibility on the victims more especially when it is a girl/women. You can hear something like “She dressed like that” “She asked for it”, but this project makes the fact clearly and direct. Those are what they were wearing, and some even carrying a gun-that still made her a victim.

Museum visitors are invited to share their perspective about harassment and violence.

Art Piece: El Tendedero, The clothesline Project

Artist: Monica Mayer

The piece I chose is called El Tendedero by Monica Mayer who is an Activist and Artist from Mexico City. For this piece, Mayer had many women from different social classes, education, and areas in the city talk about what they dislike about the city they reside in. A common thing that was brought up was sexual harassment many had to face in public. Although sexual harassment was a common thing written on these sheets of paper, there were also other topics that were written about such as cases of racism, classism, and many more that occur in society. The reason why I chose this piece to share is that I think it is such an empowering project. A lot of people can feel alone when it comes down to facing problems and issues. They can feel alone and unheard as if their voice doesn’t matter but Mayers project made it so that many women can write their opinion and their story in a way where many other people can read and become aware of what many have faced and gone through. It is a project that shines a light on many issues and problems that need to change for the better. From writing personal experiences to giving advice to others, this project is such a powerful one that helps spread awareness and give a voice to those who feel unheard.

This is a piece by Marilyn Minter! It’s a part of her “Plush” series. I know it’s very suggestive, but that’s why I chose it. Most of Minter’s work focuses on sexuality and sexual liberation, which I think is very important, especially for women. Although it can seem small and insignificant, this portrayal of pubic hair challenges the beauty standards forced upon women in our society. Hair isn’t dirty or unhygienic, and sex is also a natural part of life for a lot of people — I think it shouldn’t be so controversial, and should also be talked about more openly. Everyone is entitled to do whatever they want to their body!

I know we only had to choose one image but I wanted to shine light on this Æffective power through artistic activism that I personally walk by daily on my way to work in the West Village, NY. I actually don’t know her name but I can share that her instagram is @westvillagefamous and as per her small bio description is a “frustrated designer and serial sign maker. I have been passing by this residence for about a year and a half and even though many times, especially before taking this course, I wasn’t aware of some of the meanings behind her quotes, I have always felt that what she is doing is very important. I send snapshots to my sister who always enlightens me when I’m lost. I think this a perfect example of addressing our current social and political climate in an artistic way
