Yin Lin-Reflection 13

Abortion Hotline let me know that how abortions could be something unaffordable in the states, so that women have to call for funding. States seems making things related to abortion unaffordable for these poor women. Plan B is like $40 -$50 dollars and only 2 kinds of plan b selling-$40 or $50.   “When somebody can’t get abortion pills on their own terms, that is a human rights violation. It doesn’t matter what kind of obstacles there are, whether it’s legal, financial, logistical, personal, private, preference—it doesn’t matter. Abortion should be available on your own terms, however you need it, whenever you need it, and in whatever way you need it.”

It makes me very upset also the most important is only women have to take the responsibilities, and the person who causes them pregnant is disappear here. I only see women seeking helps and women can’t afford it but it is unfair that in these cases, another genders can be invisible even they share part of responsibility to it.

Yin Lin Reflection 1

From the readings these week, I learnt that gender is who we are that is socially created by the characteristics of being a man or a woman, referring to the roles that each gender plays.  There are three types of genders: gender expression, gender assignment and gender identity. Gender is not just about who we are, how our bodies are, it also related to what society think the gender role should play.

People feel it is easier if there is a label so that they would use gender to label a baby since there is nothing they can talk about. Once they know the gender of the babies, they can come up with other labels very quick—for example, pink clothes for baby girl, blue or green clothes for baby boy. Barbie for girls, cars for boys. In many places, they are comfortable for these concept and stereotypes. If you tell them that is a concept and human beings can choose which gender that they think is more close to the real selves, that would be a difficult idea for them to receive since they get used to these stereotypes for many years.

Yin Lin Discussion 14

I feel upset, disappointed, heartbroken after I knew the leaked document about Roe v. Wade. It shows us that what the reality is and as people who living in New York City, an liberal place, we only see how New York City is but we forget how the rest of United States is or even how the rest of the world is. How we thought and how we behave and how the world really is are different things. And actually there is only 6 countries can be considered gender equal and United States of course is not belonging to any of them.

What makes me angry also that people consider themselves Pro-Life but they just care about the existence of the babies, if the babies is not dying by abortion, that is good enough on their ends; but if the babies didn’t have a well environment to grow up or if the babies didn’t have well health care technique to be born, they don’t care. Which is ridiculous for me also make me doubt about that how much they care about life.

It is important that to have the right to abortion, and at the same time, we can’t just let women to take care of the responsibilities. Their partners also need to help and take care of it and protect them.

We fought for the rights so many years and we shouldn’t let it back to the old days. Yes birth rate is dropping, but if only forcing banning the abortion right instead of offering a better environment, better deliver health care conditions plus well grow up places and education resources, I do really doubt about what good this would bring to us. It would increase illegal abortion accident and it could cause more people pass away due to accidents. It also would cause other health issues caught by unsuccessful pregnancies—pregnancies are complicated and it could cause different illness for the mothers. Even for people who want to be the mothers sometimes they have to choose abortions due to the pregnancies could bring more risky accidents for them.

Yin Lin Reflection 12

I inspired a lot by these readings and happy to discover more arts and artists through the readings and other classmates’ posts.

After reading 10 Female Performance Artists You Should Know, from Ana Mendieta to Carolee Schneemann, I am attracted by Wilson’s artwork and what she said in an interview. “As women, we find ourselves performing all the time to meet society and the culture’s expectations about what we’re supposed to do, how we’re supposed to look, what we’re supposed to think,” Wilson explained in a 2015 interview. These become the reasons that Wilson doing her artwork or it is the core value and idea that motivate her to do her arts. She is using role play to discover how others invasing female’s self identity.

That’s the topic and thought that what I am being interested in-I feel like women are being required to fit in too many roles but there is no role for her to only play her true self. Most roles are under other people’s gazing-“good wife””good mother””good daughter”, they are all belonging to someone’s wife, mother or daughter but not herself. A woman’s whole time is being seperating and chopped to serve others depends on the relationships but never for herself. The society doesn’t want to give back the right to women-they dont want a woman can charge for herself and can take care of her own time. She is being considered to be thoughtful, caring, kind and willing to devote herself in a family-from her own home to others’ home, from daughter to wife, from wife to mother, she switching her role but it is difficult to see a place that she can play her own self by her free willing.

The “What Were You Wearing?” Survivor Art Installation originated at the University of Arkansas in 2013. Created by Jen Brockman and Dr. Mary Wyandt-Hiebert, the project was inspired by Dr. Mary Simmerling’s poem,What I Was Wearing.

I choose this art project because I saw it on news a few years ago and when I read the assignment requirement this week, this project is the first one came to my mind. Due to slut shaming, the society put the responsibility on the victims more especially when it is a girl/women. You can hear something like “She dressed like that” “She asked for it”, but this project makes the fact clearly and direct. Those are what they were wearing, and some even carrying a gun-that still made her a victim.

Yin Lin Reflection 11

Through the readings and film this week, we can know more about what kinds of medical oppression exist when it comes to different groups. It makes me feel sad that there are still so many unfair situations occur because of people’s identities. Through A Birth Story we can know how risky the birth delivering procession could be for a black woman. It causes by racism but it is difficult to prove or have evidence.

From 12 Reasons It Should Be Illegal for Doctors Not to Treat Trans People that is how terrible and dangerous that trans people facing with their lives. Due to new rules that HHS made, federally funded healthcare providers and insurers to legally deny care to transgender people. This rule put transgender people’s lives in a risky position and they shouldn’t face that because of their identities.

After watching Period. End of Sentence. I see the hope that once girls and women have chance, they can release their power and they can do it well also help others out-which is beautiful. It also reminds me of some experiences that how embarrassing or the culture makes you feel embarrassing if you are having your period. It is the same in my hometown that women during period considered dirty so they are not allowed to go to the temple.

Yin Lin-Discussion 12

Among the readings, it is sad to see women of color and trans people facing unfair medical treatment experience even they are living in a first world countries. In the film, I was surprised that one of the girls had to drop off school because she had to go far away to change clothes during her period.

Through the readings and film, we can see women from developing countries and women of color and trans people in developed countries all facing unfair medical treatment because of their identities. Also they can not have enough rights to live as a normal being due to their identities.

Watching the girl had to drop off school because she couldn’t have solution during her period time makes me sad. What was worse, menstruation is a taboo in India. Which means, she probably can’t even explain to other people around her or even just in her family that why she had to drop off school. This girl is one of the girls and women who could have to give up chances of education, career due to their normal bodies’ conditions. Her stories meant there are more girls and women would have the similar experiences in India. They have to give up what they want, what they expect in the future. I believe in other countries would happen similar things. It also reminds me of when I was in middle school, our school uniform pants is white, which could be problematic for girls who were having period. Because without a good sex education, people still treat menstruation as a taboo not just in India. It also makes girls/women feel shameful for their bodies even it is something normal. Something normal becomes taboo or a shame that depends on the standard. Among the readings and the film, what we can see is only straight men can be survived in this medical oppression. There was a joke, said if men would have menstruation one day, they would make it become something proud-which I can see that in the patriarchy system.

Even though, I do like the documentary Period. End of Sentence. It makes me proud while watching how hard that the girls and women in the village working together making pads, earning money also solving the problem cause by period, which putting women in an inconvenient situation. They use their women power, setting other women free, help them to “Fly”.

In the end I would like to point out that sanitary products in the states or other countries could be very pricy-that is another pink tax women are paying. In this case, menstrual cup is wonderful product-you can use it multiple times, it is environment friendly also save your pennies!

Yin Lin Reflection 10

I like this week’s reading materials. It taught me that how to stand with yourself while outside/mainstream standard against you. Identity politics is about empower, is about how to tell your own stories, your own background and your experience. As the example that Garza used in The Power of Identity Politics, the blonde hair girl thought actors would be in a movie it is because they are good not because of their skin color. Personally, I also heard of a white man said this to me, “I don’t think there is a problem that if a country uses the majority race as the actors/actress on TV ….”. In my opinion, the blonde girl and the white man are the same because they choose to ignore the fact that people of color given less chance to be seen in TV or other industries, not just that, they also want to use the standard look like equal to apply for everyone such as “actors should be chosen because they are good”. But that is not the fact, the fact is people of color have to work much harder, try much harder to prove themselves to be considered as good as the majority race even they are already good enough.

There are stereotypes for different races but you won’t see it as much when it comes to white people. It looks like white people could be good and could be bad; but this is what we ask for. Because human has good sides and bad sides but never only has one side. Considering asians work hard or good at math-also bring this kind of stereotype when it comes to work and expect asian employees work more than other employees are harmful. That’s why identity politics matters, and why personal is political. We ask for to be treated as the same-just as a human that would make mistakes also could makeup the mistakes.

Yin Lin-Discussion 11

Identity Politics matters-it changes a way that we get use to see through people or how society labels them. By defining who you are and what culture influences you so that you can introduce yourself to the world. There are lives for majority/mainstream lifestyles which is also how society considers as normal, usual lifestyle. That’s why Identity politics matters because in this way, you will let other people know besides the mainstream lifestyle, there are other lifestyles; besides straight women and men, there are gay, bisexual, queer and lesbians. And by defining us more clearly, can give us the power also take back the right to label ourselves.

Aleichia Williams’ article “Too Latina To Be Black, Too Black to be Latina” reminds me of HAPA group. HAPA is a hawaiian word to refer to people who are mixed races and ethnicities. Among the HAPA reddit forum, I read their experiences like they feel like either of the races group don’t consider as their people since they only have half ethnicity and the race group doesn’t feel like they are pure enough, always think they are different. HAPA kids feel very confused when they were kids because they don’t know why people don’t hangout with them. Certainly once it is becoming common or a city is international enough to see people with different backgrounds and races , HAPA kids would know that they are welcomed too.

For the coming weeks, I do like to learn more economy about feminism, and how society discipline women and other minorities.

Yin Lin Reflection 9

The Combahee River collective, it said, “A Black feminist presence has evolved most obviously in connection with the second wave of the American women’s movement beginning in the late 1960s. Black, other Third World, and working women have been involved in the feminist movement from its start, but both outside reactionary forces and racism and elitism within the movement itself have served to obscure our participation. ” It was very unfair that during the second wave of the American women’s movement, black women participated in the movement but didn’t gain enough credits for it. Also there is no policy changed for their situations. When I was watching Mrs. America, it addressed this part too. Black women who joined the movement was disappointed to notice that white feminists fighting for feminism, female right but even though, they didn’t consider black feminists’ right. That’s why it matters that to have your own foundations, your own community. That’s why Combahee River bought up the concept “Identity Politics”, and it is important to know about your identity, to tell your stories and engage with people who sharing the same experience, and empower from them. It is a long journey and long fight, know how to gain power and find people you can fight with together matters.

By watching Paris is Burning, I can know the queer history and culture at that time. It enriches and inspires other industries and artworks. For example, Madonna’s song Vogue is impacted by it. But unlike Madonna that she can perform this song multiple times on different stages also earn money. The original vogue creators and other queer are still struggling about their lives. The mainstream is curious about their lives but just want to take a look but not really want to care about it. The film was shooting at 1990 and till today, we still can witness queer community especially black queer community are still being attacked because of their identities.
