My name is Veronica and my pronouns are She/Her. I have been married to my husband for 2 years (but we’ve been together overall for 7 years). I am an NYC native, grew up in Spanish Harlem my whole life. I moved away from NYC during COVID and lived in New Mexico from May 2020 to June 2021.
I have a cat named Cayde, I adopted him in New Mexico, he is a rescue tuxedo cat. I absolutely love cats, I don’t mind dogs but they’re not my favorite.
My major at BMCC is Communication Studies. My hope is to graduate next year and then attend Brooklyn College or Baruch. My ultimate goal career-wise is to work at a community college upstate either in; the Student Activities, Residence Life, or Diversity department. I want to be an advocate for inner-city youth who go through a constant struggle in higher education. I want students to understand that they have rights and show them how to exercise their rights in college. I have seen students of color often get mistreated or dismissed because of personal prejudices by people who work in administration and I want to be that person students can go to when they are mistreated and I can be an ally in the staff for them. Whether that means giving recommendations on behalf of the student to disciplinary committees or even helping the student through the process of filing a complaint against a professor or administrator.
I am actually retaking this course. I attempted to complete this course last semester but was not able to. I know that I love the content in this course however which is why I chose to retake it with the same professor (Hi professor Waychoff!). I hope to be much more involved when it comes to completing my assignments. Having the opportunity to take this course Asynchronously gives me much more flexibility with my new work schedule. I will miss class discussions though.
Suggestions I have for this course are; YouTuber Contrapoints. She creates video essays on YouTube and I enjoy her content. I would also love to dig deep into the representation of women in fantasy films/literature.
I am an active nerd/geek and I play Dungeons & Dragons. I have received nothing but amazing openness and acceptance into the nerd communities that I belong to. However, I know that it hasn’t always been this way for female nerds. I would love to look at the growth of nerd culture when it comes to girls getting into video games both professionally and recreationally.
