Salima Zack – Reflection 13

It will always be a wonder as to why people could not just do “the right thing”, but a question I have been asking for who knows long is, “What is the right thing? do we actually know what it is, or we just pretend to?” Like the issue of the “Hyde Amendment”, Mr. Henry Hyde probably thinks he is doing a just word by having federal funds seized in accordance with safe abortion. There is a saying that, “what might work for me, might not work for you”. Some individuals may not get the abortions for one of many reasons and indeed learn to love the decision of not going through with the procedure of medical termination, whereas it may hell for other individuals. Using the documentary as a reference, a woman states that so many children live in poverty, without efficient and accurate care. If kids are going to end up living regretfully and sadly, would it not be better to give the mothers the option and right to take action in preventing calamities like this, that in instances, many foresee.

The Supreme Court voting to overturn abortion rights is considered very serious as its decision most likely is going to affect the chances of the entire nation. It is depressing, to even think of the notion that, future of many young and middle-aged women lies in the hands of the decision makers in the country who are not completely considering how vital the situation is. The only stance of argument used in opposing legal abortion is that “It is a taboo”.

Salima Zack – Discussion 14

Decades after, the fight regarding whether abortion should be legalized continues to have us on our toes. The case of “Roe v. Wade” is one may have predicted would resurface because, as far as society is concerned, the issue with abortion is going to be a continuous debate with opposing yet somehow reasonable views. Telemedicine abortion, seemingly an aid heavily backed by Dutch Physician Rebecca Gomperts serves to provide services to women/ girls who are been denied the access to legally rid themselves of unborn babies that are mostly unwanted. In the documentary, “Vessel”, we observe some chaos as a number of people protest to have women abort their babies at their will and most importantly safely. It is described as a symbol of freedom and human rights to have women take these actions.

From the times of our forefathers, abortion has always been branded as a sin/ a taboo and illegal. I am not trying to be condescending but both sides have truths to their story and will be considered as one of the many reasons why this debate is still ongoing and will for a long time be. People say abortion is bad because it is seen as a crime, as lives of fetuses are being taken. It is said that a viable fetal starts from 24 weeks, which is equivalent to 6 months. Some even state that a fetus may survive at 22 or 23 weeks. “Having an abortion is the same as committing murder”, especially if the fetus exceeds 20 weeks. The other side also have very valid points as to why they would support abortion. Every individual knows what is best for their bodies and would go extra miles to see to that expectation. If an individual has a sexual intercourse but did not have any plans of having a child, she might want to have an abortion, that’s if she gets pregnant as a result – to rid herself of the pain of having to change or even ruin the plans she must have set for herself.

Daily, women are seeking help to have access to medical procedures to safely remove fetus from their wombs because as we observe from the documentary, the women are broken and are still trying to find themselves, their situations do not favor them having kids. The Hyde Amendment has caused a lot of disadvantages, in the sense that enough funding is not put in place to help these women who are in desperate need of financial support, they are fully certain of. The Abortion Helpline, “This is Lisa” sought to provide as much funding as possible to women who would like to have abortions. Women who holding onto their sad stories and unfortunate situations.

Salima Zack – Reflection 12

Through condescending communication, art has served purging and striking influences in its domain. Spreading intense messages through its magnificent images as well as speaking volumes of truth without having to say much. Art is such that, an individual could take a look at it and would perfectly understanding the message it is trying to adhere. Same goes for it through activism, art has served its purpose in the world of activism. As foreknown activism is the act where higher authorities and oppressing laws, and policies are challenged. Including the will desires to have amendments which benefits some to others to be reformed. Art being a way of expressing thoughts and imagination through creative skills like paintings, sculptures and all kinds of artifacts goes hand in hand and perfectly supports the sensation of activism. Art can be used to strategically design monuments which helps to visualize concepts and ideas that needs to be targeted.

It is such an emotional excitement to learn of amazing artist who have used their arts in the forms of paintings and object to spread awareness of incoherent government and matters of intersectionality. Maria Evelia Marmolejo’s art indeed caught my attention with the abstract notion of environmental concern including the analysis of earth cleanliness. Joan Jonas, with the art of reflection and approval (at least that is the message I got from the image). Tania Bruguera, amongst many others who capture intense emotions and insight in their monument and paintings. I am mostly excited about these works because the artist are women. I always get excited to see women thrive.

Art is like the emblem of soul speech. It always exudes contents which is always hard to express through words. This image was made by a street artist so the isn’t known, however I have attached the link which will assist in giving answers to what you may want. I really like this art; it displays delicately a moment during which Americans had it tough. It depicts a time when Americans were battling for rights and the end of police Brutality. Of course, not all police officers react or settle issues as badly as in the case of George Floyd, however that is the stigma that has been branded to the cops. The people really are not to blame, the number of cases with such similarities is overwhelming. The image, this art has a deep meaning and a revolutionary story behind it. A very impactful message that draws attention wherever.

The development of this documentary from beginning to end is worth praising. Initially, the reactions and concept towards menstruation was said and a bit infuriating. When asked about period and pads, the females both young and old were shy or embarrassed to give a response. When the men were asked, its either they did not know or had some absurd idea or stigma relating to it, that it was an illness mostly associated with females, and so many other inaccurate information about it. It is obvious in ancient days; women were not taught of its acknowledgement. They did not what it, why it came and how to go about it. Ad one lady stated she kept changing clothes because of it and because of the constant stress, she stopped schooling as a result. If you access this situation with your heart and not your mind, you will get infuriated by the circumstance. However, let’s look at it this way, in India, technology has not or did not advance as compared to nations like the United States or Europe. In times like those, to prevent confusion and discomfort, people regarded to things that were not of their knowledge as taboo. Nevertheless, as seen, progressing things begin to waver and change. People, especially the women begin to be curious, women learn how to make pads and educate others on how to use them, instead of the usual unsanitary cotton clothes. This is also enacted the will to learn something whilst earning money. “A lot needs to change”, indeed it does but it does not occur overnight. It happens through consistency and I am glad some individuals are taking steps towards that change.

Embarrassing and disturbing, LeConte’s experience is a sad and not so shocking incidence many black women as well as women of color experience while receiving medical treatments be it for neonatal, postpartum, or whichever. Racism during birth, who would have thought amongst the many posed disadvantages to blacks and other people of color, obstetric racism would be thing. In the beginning of the Article, I thought the story would have been of a particular person who had disrespected and inflicted pain to a patient, but to recognize that at least three medical staff had neglected and degraded LeConte is beyond horrifying. The situation of LeConte is one I hope would bring awareness to similar situations. In the birth mom’s situation, she had her husband, two doulas and even an OB-GYN team. My point is, imagine someone, for instance a single mom who does not have much connection nor the people and most importantly a woman of color, she would have a very terrible experience. LeConte had to endure disprespect and abuse, she spoke up when pain was been inflicted on her but that did not reduce the level of coercion she received. Worst of all, after having to endure the severe pain of getting injected with too much epidural and two days of induction, she had to walk herself with her newborn to the postpartum room. How disgraceful of professional worker who have licence and sworn in by the state. It is quite shocking to discover, also discovering it is as a result a lot if women lose their lives is very heart breaking. Nobody sincerely deserves to endure abuse of this sought. Glad this brought to light, although LeConte had mix of emotions through her experience, I cannot say the same for other hospitals. I remember about a year ago around this time, my sister gave birth to my beautiful niece. I could essentially proclaim my sister had quite the opposite experience compared to what the main character of this story went through. My sister was a month late and her hospital advised it best she settled in the hospital and have her baby induced. This was during a time when Covid rules were still mandatory. They treated my sister with immense care, she could barely feel pain when she was being injected, had several nurses who constantly came to her aid even when she did not need it. She always rode in stroller, before and after birth and even had to beg them to let her be for some time to exercise. I sincerely hope there’d be medical staff as good and professional as those who attended to my sister.

In matters of identity politics, circumstances of people not being aware of their default in cases like that of the blond lady is indirectly common. It is a bit a similar to instances where people or specifically white people stating that they are unaware of privileges only made favorably to them. The blond is proclaiming her views about how we should avoid bringing the identity of personalities into issues, whereas it is undoubtedly visible, and that society treats people differently based on those identities. Our identities are what determines are roles in society whether we want it that way or not.  Its by which some individuals are treated as very important people and others treated as nuisance.

“Too black to be Latina” explores many instances where black people are being doubted if they state they are Hispanic or Latina. They are asked very insensitive questions and, in some situations, make reprimands which puts them in very uncomfortable situations. Also vice versa, when a Hispanic or Latina says they are black, it comes off as a shock to so many. To some it may come of as genuine curiosity and to others they just pass off offensive comments in states of not understanding how and why it is possible or so. It is heartbreaking to see people go through the emphasis and frustrations of constant negligence relating to incidences like this. Ordinary people and celebrities all encounter people who have no sense of dignity, such people sometimes even come up with scenarios to justify the things they say.

Discussion 11

It would not be an exaggeration to state that individuals classified within a specific range of identity encounter incidences which deprives or reduces their senses of dignity and pride. Identity politics consists of composite situations that builds upon its comprehension. In our current community, there are people who perfectly fit the norm, whereas others must somehow denounce or change who they are to be accepted in such category. What it is to be black and/ or a person of color, a woman, a member of the LGBTQ community and so on. For instance, miss blonde lady at the bar who was not in agreement of “diverse group”, and very much did not appreciate the fact that an actor was identified as nonwhite. In many circumstances, there have been people with characteristics like our said female who have more or less failed to acknowledge that different groups continue to experience varying influences. we subsequently reside in a society so many enforced and or implemented laws have been segregated and only benefits certain individuals whilst others indeed suffer from them, protects some and directly or indirectly puts the rest in danger. Garza Alicia simultaneously concurs identity politics to power and authority as she furtherly explains that in as much as society degrades people of color, they regardless possess “power” to make certain decisions although larger forces and/ or people with higher positions in society create those options from which we choose from.

“Too black to be Latina” has similarities with assuming an Arab cannot be Christian, or a Muslim cannot be black. Countless people on a daily basis experience such blatant ignorance in accordance with the race or inclusively the identity of a person. Nevertheless, when it came to matters like this, people were always faced with the hard on decision to pick an identity over the other. For instance, “you cannot be Latin and black”, “you are either black or Latin”. People are expected to deny a part of their identity and fully embrace the other. According to the article, the author states of an incidence where two different groups were going head-to-head with one another, she stated that during the she was very perplexed as to which group to side on. There are moments where people receive unnecessary complements for not being “normal”. In a posted YouTube video, a black girl shared her experience of how different she is treated whenever she tells people she is Hispanic.

Reflections 9

Paris is burning encompasses passion, hope, beauty and even depression. Adults, middle aged people and old people who feel dejected from society form an alliance to create events amongst themselves to relieve themselves of loneliness and make meanings of incidence while there is little to no chances of acceptance. The film is a very touching journey of people who wish to live normal lives just like everyone else, even though our community may regard them as mentally unstable and uniformly fragile. Tragic to discover that a Drag queen who dreamed of having a family passed away. She was strangled and left under a bed in a hotel in New York City. My guess is that it was either a hate crime or a lover. A person who had dated him without knowing his original gender but finding out later. The balls and numerous events have been going many decades and have provided solace to these individuals. They created a world, a place to suit their desires and fill their frustrations. The balls and events with classy varying themes have been moved on from generations to generations. Sad to know that even underaged children leave their homes to find comfort elsewhere because their parents or family refuse to accept them for what they chose to be.

The Combahee River Collective Statement strives to provide essential support to people who have been oppressed by the system, by the manipulated enforced policies which degrades the potential and capabilities of people especially people of color.

Discussion 10

The Combahee River Collective Statements consists of a group of feminists who dedicate their lives and time to the betterment of society. To assist people with issues of racism, sexism, oppression and so on. The movement collaborates with other organizations to set and combat policies which favors some and not all, to create and establish situation to which helps the circumstances of people of color.

Paris is Burning incorporates balls which were formal events to showcase costumes, the applause and having to be the center of attention. Watching this film, I was reminded of the show “Pose”. Pose seems to be an enactment of “Paris is Burning”. Grand events are organized for Drag queens embodies a kind of new world for them. There are underaged kids, some abandoned, some that had left home found solace and joy in participating in the events. They are of their own will to portray whatever they pleased and will not get discriminated. To them, the balls events are their “Oscar” or “Grammy”. They are praised while on the stage and that makes them think highly of themselves. This is a place where people can be whatever they wish to be.

The ball is used to focus on very specific themes, but as time went on- the themes were made more diverse to increase the involvement and number of participants. Kids who aren’t fully matured, even at tender ages were aware of the kind of life they would face against society for choosing to be different. Lucky enough, for those whom that decided to leave their homes or get abandoned get to be taken in by owners of houses – who had experienced similar circumstances and would like to offer a helping hand. The houses are named after people or persons who had first gained access to it. Winners of the events and/ or ball competitions get prizes, could be a trophy or money. When it comes to competition, the executives always change the theme for the competition, it could be modeling, thus, reading which is like throwing fun shades or voguing, a form of dancing and whilst posing at the same time. Aside from having exhilarating joy from being in the spotlight and enjoying the contemporary freedom, the drag queens have their own hustle, a job on which they depend help support their lifestyle. Drag queens have dreams they wish to obtain which includes getting Famous, to be wealthy, and in general to live freely and happily.
