Watching these videos made me see how humans have no regard for human life. I say this because how could you know there’s a fire you have people in the building and just lock the doors to prevent them from accessing any way to escape. In my opinion, they rather see people jump to their death than help them escape. Fortunately, in the United States, there are laws that are put in place to alert workers when there’s a fire for instance the fire sprinklers but in most countries, I don’t have laws that protect workers from disasters like the one in Bangladesh. I believe people have to fight for what they believe in, for instance, human rights every person should have access to regardless of whether you are in a different country. Also, workers should have access to proper safe workplaces. Workers should not be fear to go to work or even have to choose between work or life. It just blows my mind how these workers had to jump in order for the family to have their bodies so they can get a proper burial and memorial service. NO family should have to ever be afraid or worried that their loved ones will never return home because of the work conditions they have to work at because they’re simply trying to survive or no worker should ever have to fear not ever seeing a family again because they’re simply trying to survive and support their families.

Nia Brown DISCUSSION 8
This week I watch two videos and in the two videos, I saw the comparison of labor rights, the equal rights amendment, and suffrage. Suffrage is when women were fighting for the right to vote in the United States. Labor rights are what I saw a lot of in these two videos labor right is for employees to have a proper and safe workplace which the employer has to provide. The equal rights amendment is the legal right for Americans regardless of their sex. These rights are all related because going out and casting your votes makes a difference on which law/rights are passed. For example, if you wanted to make a difference in labor rights you will have to vote in order to see that difference. Labor rights are also a gender justice issue because within labor right you are also fighting for gender equality. As labor rights are put in place, they work in conjunction with gender equality because the rights are put in place to make sure everyone is treated equally. It helps everyone regardless of their gender expression thrive within the workforce. These historical issues act in today’s society because they have led the way for workers to be treated fairly and equally no matter what gender ethnicity you are you are. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire changed the condition in factories in the United States for the better because protesters, protected for a proper and safe workplace, but it also change for the worse as companies went overseas to produce their products while paying those workers lower wages and provided unsafe conditions in their workplace, for example, the fire in Bangladesh it was very similar to the fire in New York City both places paid low wage and had unsafe conditions and also doors have locked the employers to ensure that none of their products were stolen in the results of doors being locked people jumped out of the window so that families can have a proper memorial service for them when their bodies were recovered. In my opinion, these employers in both Bangladesh and the United States have no regard for human life or human rights. I say this because how could you know there’s a fire and just lock the door because the employers did not want the employees to steal products. As they worried more about material things than human life.

This was one of the toughest readings I have done in this class I was extremely confused but I am going to write what I understood. What I read was about the history of feminism. To my understanding, feminism is described to be a women’s collective activity to advance women’s condition. I understand this meaning to be that feminism is based on women’s business that can help advance in different ways and help have more equity with males.
In my opinion, not all females are feminists. We just want to be treated fairly and have the right we deserve. Again this assignment was very difficult for me to understand.
Nia Brown Discussion 7
This week’s reading “What’s in a Name? Writing the history of Feminism” by Claire Goldberg was very informative about the term feminism. Claire stated that the word feminism has meanings that can change with time and place. To my understanding, this statement means the term feminism has different meaning the changes with time and place. I see where Claire is coming from, but society just knows that the definition of feminism is a person who advocates for women’s rights and equality for both males and females.
To Claire, feminism or feminist is to separate things. Feminism to her is a women’s collective activity to advance women’s condition. While she states that feminism is often assigned to women’s collective that occurs before the word even exists but she believes that the word does not yet exist.

After reading and watching the film “United in Anger” I learned that activism is when you campaign for a cause to bring political or social change. Activism is also about making people listen to your cause. The perfect example of activism is the film I watched “United in Anger”. This film was about a group that goes by the name of ACT UP, the group wanted social and political change on how people in society and the government viewed the AIDS epidemic, which occurred in the early 1980s. The group fought for simple rights that every human should have regardless of their condition. Some of these rights were for those who have AIDS to have access to healthcare, treatment that included medicine, and for them to qualify for social security ETC. At some point in the film, they even wanted the government to acknowledge that it was an epidemic and people were dying from this illness. The group ACT UP wanted the government to stop the spreading lies about AIDS and wanted them to be open with society about the epidemic. This film showed me that activism is a group that won’t take no for an answer, and they will keep fighting for what they believe in and what they know is right. A way I engaged in activism is the Black Lives Matter movement (BLM). I engaged by going to protest and showing my support for the movement. Another way I engaged in activism is going to the National Alliance of mental illness (NAMI) walk. Although it might be a walk it was a way for people to get together and show their support and protest against the stigma mental illness has. A way for me to engage in activism on gender justice is to show my support for what I believe in. An example is protesting to have equal rights for all genders both male and female. In conclusion, this film has really opened my eyes to activism. Knowing how great activism is to get your point across in a productive manner can be more affectionate and can impact any to join a movement.
Nia Brown Reflection 5
The film I chose to watch was “United in Anger,” I found this film to be very powerful and moving and the film also educated me on an issue I knew about but I was not very educated on. This film was about the aid epidemic and an advocacy group that goes by the name of ACT UP. The group ACT UP put up strong fights to make sure that people with Aids had health care, treatment, and overall had rights that they deserve. I found this movement to be very powerful because by protesting and never giving up hope they got their point across in situations that some thought it was impossible to fight for but those thoughts did not stop the group. I feel like ACT UP is a strong group of people that did not give up on what they believed they should have regardless of their illness. My final thought is that this advocacy group did its job by fighting against leaders that did not want to shed light on this epidemic. Today their work is being shown by having access to healthcare, treatment, and housing for people that have AIDS.
Reflection 3 Nia Brown
After the readings, it has given me a better understanding of what privilege is and what oppression is. Before reading these readings I was a bit skeptical to say that I am privileged because I did not have the best understanding of what privilege is. Now that I do have a better understanding of that privilege is, I understand that I am privileged to even in the simple ways. To my understanding, Privilege is having access or advantages that others may not have. I am privileged because I have a roof over my head, I can walk, I have access to education and I have food to eat, ETC. While in the case of oppression, I have always known that I was being oppressed. this reading just confirmed it even more. The reason I know I have been oppressed is because I have been treated unfairly due to the color of my skin, my mental illness, and even where I come from. My reason is a good way to define oppression. In my opinion, oppression means is having someone cruelly mistreating you because of your race, gender, age, or in my case your mental health. Being oppressed is by far the hardest experience I have ever had to go through because it made me very unsure and confused about myself. Not knowing what to define with really made me wonder who I really am. I have learned from these readings and the video never to take advantage of what you have because there are people without and wish they can have access to things that you are taken advantage of.
Nia Brown Discussion 4
After watching this video I can say I am pretty privileged even in simple ways. One way I consider myself to be privileged is being in good health. Being in good health is very important because without help I believe if you can not function physically it will take a toll on your mental. I believe this because physically you are wanting to do stuff like play sports but because of your health you are unable to, then you start to wonder why you can not be like everyone else or be a “normal” person that is when it can start affecting your mental state. Other ways I am privileged are being able to have access to education, being able to walk and talk, having clean water to drink, having food in the fridge to eat, and having a roof over my head. Having a roof over your head is very important because you need it to survive and to maintain good health physically and mentally. Oppression is considered to be cruel and unjust treatment. One way I have experienced oppression is being a biracial child. I have been treated differently by members of my family because I am half black and half Hispanic. To me my Hispanic side of the family I was never Hispanic enough for them to consider me Hispanic. This experience made me very confused and not sure where I stood in life or what others considered me to be. Another way I experienced oppression was due to my mental illness. Not many people would understand how mental illness works. In people’s eyes, mental illness is for the “crazy people.” This unfair treatment tolls me because my mental illness has made me bitter. This is because of the way people define me due to my illness that I can not control. In my opinion, my illness does not define me it is just a part of me that I have to work out. To me, I will define privilege as being able to have access to things that other individuals might have a difficult time getting access to the simple things you need in life. While oppression to me is defined as a long-lasting treatment of cruel and unjust treatment that individuals face due to the color of their skin, poverty, and where they come from. This video and reading have to be grateful for the simple things in life because there are others that do not have anything. Things that we complain about people wish they had, so live life and be grateful.
Nia Brown Reflection 2
The reading Beyond the Gender Binary by Alox Vaid Manon was an easy informative read. After reading the excerpts from the book taught that people in society have no knowledge when it comes to gender non-conforming or non-binary people and when people do have the knowledge it is not accurate information. I felt like Alox just wanted people/society to become more informed about gender non-conforming or non-binary. In my opinion, people that are gender non-conforming or non-binary are humans too that deserve that same amount of respect and rights that anyone else gets. The fact that Alox states that gender non-conforming workers are not protected by civil rights laws really has me thinking about what is this world coming to. I also can not believe that such big departments in the United States like the Department of Justice, Center of Disease Control and prevention, or even the Department of Health and Human Services are all against people that are gender non-conforming and non-binary. If major departments like these are against them what do they expect society is going to be. How could people in this world be singling out others because of their preference for identity is. I find it really troubling and sad that people are really going through this. At the end of the day we are all humans, so people need to start at least respecting other people’s wishes regardless of their personal opinions. In the future before you state your opinions just have some knowledge of what the individuals are going through.

I found Sex and Gender 101 to be very informative as it gave me a better understanding of the difference between both sex and gender. I always wondered the difference between the two terms. Now that I read the article Sex and Gender 101, I definitely got a better understanding. Some information that I found informative was that there are three types of genders: Gender assignment, gender identity, and gender expression. This made me wonder what type I fall into. I believe I fall under the gender expression where I express my gender through the clothes I wear, the make-up I put on, or even the way I do my hair but another part of me is ok with my gender assignment which is female. While defining sex to be more of a scientific outlook. What I mean about more of a scientific outlook is that it explains the XY chromosome which means you will be assigned a male while the XX chromosome which means you are assigned a female. So I understand that sex and gender are two completely different terms. I am extremely excited that I learned the meaning of these terms because now I can inform others in my family that always wondered about the difference between these terms. I can’t wait to see what else this class has in store and the many things I will learn during this class. I will take what I learn and inform my family about the different terms we will continue to learn.
