Merichel Almonte, Discussion 9

I really liked the readings this week I learned new things. As for the concept of a liberated woman, for me she is a very empowered woman, who knows what she wants, likes her freedom without limits, who has her own reasons and knows that she is more than any stereotype created in society because she knows and knows her body does not let anything limit it. However in “The Politics of Housework” she argues “The liberated woman has a lot of sex and has a career, preferably something that can fit in with housework, like dancing, pottery or painting”. This shows that they have a very different idea because It is mentioned that a liberated woman is one who has a career, a very active sexual life, putting women in the sense that this would be bad, they all have the right, just as men do all that women can because both genders have to have the same value.
A liberated woman brings many good things to society, for example, a liberated woman transmits that security to other women, further empowering feminism.

On the other hand, in the article “The Politics of Housework” it is argued “the reason why many parents would prefer to be the ‘fixer’ of the house than to wash the dishes”. In this quote it is observed how it does not only happen in a family but in millions, since the child begins to grow up he is told that “When your wife cooks for you” it is never mentioned “when you cook with your wife or help her to to cook”. It is always about the woman being the one who has to do all that when she is not like that and many men even seeing that the woman is taking care of the children she can see dirty dishes and still she does not do it.
About “The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm” it is observed “the personal is political” shows how many men are unaware of the subject as a woman feels and when she reaches orgasm this is because the man mostly only focuses on himself

In the article “The Politics of Housework” by Pat Mainardi. It is argued about the idea that men have generation by generation that women should be submissive, calm, she should obey her husband and they should take care of domestic work in the house. This is because a stereotype was created that women are the weaker sex and men are the ones who have to be in control of everything, but that is not true, everything can be 50/50 between both sexes. Mainardi argues how the woman is the one who gets the idea that she should stay at home and the man goes out to work hard. My opinion is that everything should be mutual, just as the man can work himself, the woman can work and divide her responsibilities, because it is a union of living together, not of having a burden

Merichel Almonte, Reflection 7.

I haven’t read or seen anything about the fire that occurred at the Triangggle Shirtwaist factory in a long time. I feel not so disappointed because we have made progress in the world in terms of human rights, employee rights and discrimination. However, even business owners continue to abuse their employees, they have better pay but not the one they deserve for the hours and quality of the employees at work. For example, Amazon is one of the largest and most powerful companies in the world. The market has millions of workers who work long hours, they have improved the ground a little but many of them do not have discounts to buy from the same company compared to other organizations whose employees have discounts, life insurance and a better salary.
I think that the workers, when they are employees, must obey the orders because it is the only way for them to be able to bring food to their table. However, I think that they should create organizations to give them more power and help the employees defend their rights because the workers are the head of A company cannot succeed without them

Merichel Almonte, Reflexion 6

I’m going to be honest I didn’t get to read the other two complete readings because since I started this one aroused a lot of interest in me was “The male paradox”. This is because Jackson, who is the author, is in charge of showing us everything about the porn business. I learned something new which was that I didn’t know that porn didn’t start with men and women, but with men for men. It is mentioned
“The idea that consumers of porn can masturbate and have orgasms with that kind of treatment of women and that it doesn’t affect their attitudes towards women… in their lives is more of a fantasy than anything the most creative porn writers can conjure” (186, Jackson). This shows how, according to the creators of this content, they say that the viewers only watch porn to satisfy themselves personally and that, for example, if a man watches porn of both sexes, this will not affect his way of seeing women and how to treat her in real life. . It’s true, from what I’ve heard why I shouldn’t say this here but before I used to listen when my cousins talked about it and they themselves said things like “I see them when I get horny but I know that all that is acted”. However, for consumers who do not know that this is not real, it influences them because they create a movie in their head and all of this in one way or another is reflected with women.

Merichel Almonte, Discussion 8

I was watching several videos this week on the suffrage amendment, equal rights, and labor rights where I learned a lot.  For example, all of them are related to each other because they were concepts that were created due to the abuse that people were experiencing as they had no rights and as their word was worth nothing.  They wanted rights because they were trampled on and had no way to get ahead because they were seen as people with less value or rather worthless.  These movements helped people who lived under oppression, did not know how to get out of it and how they helped them feel more protected with each other.  On the other hand, the movement that would defend labor rights so that their workers have insurance, better attention and respect, allowed genders to be able to unions to defend themselves and be protected so as not to receive any mistreatment.  Similarly, the suffrage movement allowed women for the first time to be heard, that their voice would count and men respect it.  In the video they mention that most of the employees are women, because they are exploited more, pay less and do not give them help.  On the other hand, thinking about those times and today, I think we have made a lot of progress regarding our rights because now a worker is even given medical insurance and has to be treated with respect because it is his right.  Instead, now women have more power and rights, they can have their businesses, be independent without having a man by their side and without having to be a slave to a job to eat.  But this does not mean to say that it has already come to an end, no, but many things have improved.

Merichel Almonte, Discussion Board 7

I learned a lot about feminism, activism, oppression, and women’s history. The one that I like most was Opression because show that a person should not be isolated simply because of their gender, or skin color because that does not define them and then wanting to overcome their identity, how people classify someone depending on their knowledge and social experience. Also the “White privilegies article” because as we grow up we face situations that can alter our impact on life, since the first point of view we have before others choose us coordinates how others judge us and sum us up in any case. Society has “stereotypes” of People who for them belong to the social circle and are considered by whites, without realizing how society includes people of color, given that many of them perceive them as strangers. The assumption about Black people is made by the society that produces prejudices in the new young people who adapt to these prejudices generations by generations, while they live between two universes and have problems with their identity.

Merichel Almonte, Reflection 5

In reading “How to think like an activist” by Wendy Syfert I was able to understand more clearly what activism is because before I only thought that being an activist was to make protests but no, thanks to the reading I understood that it is to make social, environmental and cultural changes for the system , to fight to defend something , to be part of and improve the system of a country .  I am not much of an activist but I like to defend and say things as they are when I understand that there is an injustice. I am in favor of activism because it helps to create a better country, for people to learn, get to know each other and volunteer to help with the changes .  Syfert mentions some examples like the march of the salt were marches of people who fought against a problem.  A video that shows us some ways of being an activist is “Girl Connected” I liked it a lot personally because it is about 5 teenagers who try to do their best to have a better system, fight not to be limited and to have fewer problems both with discrimination as violence.  In addition, it teaches a very nice message that although we can all have problems, we can all work as a group and improve them.

Merichel Almonte, Discussion Post. 6

Activism is to create changes in society such as political, environmental and social.  Activist movements not created for the purpose of defending or changing something are mostly made by people who are alienated or abused from something. I liked and was struck by the video of “Girl Connected” Because it is about 5 adolescents that each one of them does something different and thus a way to improve the system, for example they work on the issues of violence and discrimination so that in tomorrow may decrease.  They want to create and improve security for citizens, take better care of women to prevent rapes of innocent women from continuing to grow.  In the same way, Latifa is in charge of avoiding child marriage because they are children who have not yet experienced that many are abused, others do it out of fear or to seek an escape from their parents.  Ghazal inspires teenage girls that they can be motivated, creative and live with free expression without fear.  Josi directs helping adolescents to avoid pregnancy at an early age, to learn more about their bodies and everything about sexual life.  Michell and Kenya, motivates them to continue studying, preparing and having a good education.  And lastly, Ayesha teaches them self-defense so that whatever awkward situation they find themselves in they can defend themselves.  I loved all of them because we can see the work and dedication they put in and how they do good things to improve.  This leaves a lot to say as the girls worry about having a better system as it is not only the adults who are often.

Merichel Almonte, Reflection 4

Before I had no idea that there was a hierarchy of oppression because they are things that are done as part and custom of society, when we grow up we see them, many times we even see them as normal because that came from generation to generation when it shouldn’t be like that, because if your parents are wrong about a concept, you should investigate so that you don’t do the same thing.  This is due to many reasons, for example, ignorance because it does not have.  knowledge , lack of resources to search for information or they simply adapt to oppression so as not to want to break a scheme created by the system of society .  Similarly, Aidee Lorde in her article “There is no hierarchy of oppression” clarifies many things for us and that it does not exist.  Audre Lorde argues for us as a woman she faces oppression, as a lesbian being a mother and as a woman of dark skin color she faces her own fears and difficulties.  She mentions that no matter where you come from or your status, everyone faces oppression and many identities go through that situation.  Patriarchy is the one who is in charge of having control in society.  We citizens are the ones who have to improve, contribute, volunteer and seek solutions to have a better system.  She clarifies that not only women suffer oppression, but also men because they are all part of the system, many times because women in certain cases have suffered more for being submissive or for supposedly being the “weaker sex” society puts them as that it is the only one that can suffer oppression but it is not true that man too.

Merichel Almonte, Discussion Post 5

Themes such as privilege, discrimination, stereotypes and oppression are very common in society.  For example, the article “Patriarchy, the System: An it, Not a He, a Them, or an Us” by Allan Johnson shows that oppression is not always the concept that many of us have.  He argues how for people as soon as someone mentions the word oppression, they immediately think of the term patriarchy with men.  It mentions “simply the sum of individual failures on the part of people of color, women, and people living in poverty, who lack the right things to successfully compete with whites, men, and others who know how to do something for themselves”.  (Johnson 27). This quote exposes how people of color are attacked, like many women, because they live in poverty both economically and mentally, they get used to living in an oppressive way, all this is due to the lack of resources that many times they lead people to adapt, to have less and to deserve less, this leads the person to live limited and oppressed, this is because many times people get used to it because they think that since they are in poverty they believe that they will never be able to get out of it and that their life must go on like this because they have no choice but it is not true. For me patriarchy was the way in which one person can have influence over another but it is not like that. Patriarchy is a system of society or better said, created by the society when men have the power and women are in large part.  As Johnson says, many times the gender preferences of citizens are initiated by socialization.  One of the mechanisms is when a citizen helps with social problems because he is helping him to get to know more people and himself. To finish this article, it teaches us to see society and patriarchy from a different perspective, to analyze the system we have in society, to volunteer in the system, learn social issues and learn to differentiate gender oppression.

On the other hand, in the essay “There is no hierarchy of oppression” by Audre Lorde, he further develops this concept.  That a person should not be isolated simply because of their gender, or skin color because that does not define them and then wanting to overcome their identity, how people classify someone depending on their knowledge and social experience, he argued “As black, lesbian, feminist , socialist, poet, mother of two children, one of them, and member of an interracial couple”.  This shows that by acknowledging her race and gender, she refuses to ignore the oppression she suffers as a result of what she identifies with.  This helps people know how and when an action turns into oppression , they must know their rights to know how to defend themselves and how not to fall into being oppressed by someone with ignorance .
