Jade Pimentel Discussion Post 1

Hi everyone! My name is Jade Pimentel, I use she/her pronouns, and I am a liberal arts major. I am hoping to, later on, get a degree in Zoology and become a zoologist. I like to draw, sing, watch shows/movies, and talk to my friends on the phone. I like taking up a lot of different hobbies. I don’t like when people are rude to me or when I order a package, and it never gets delivered!! (recently happened to me). I am from New York City, but my family is from the Dominican Republic. I value loyalty and truthfulness, I am a believer in God, and I hope to have a good home, marriage, and family in the future. I am interested in creating stories with my friends, and I play a lot on my Nintendo Switch, especially Animal Crossing. My friends and I make a lot of alternate universes while playing D&D, and we learn a lot of new things because most of these things require a lot of research! We spent a lot of time doing improv scenes, and we were all in the Drama Club in our high school.

I’ve started a new hobby, Doll Customization, and I’ve spent a lot of money buying materials. I’m glad I receive the support I need from my family and friends, even though they complain that I change hobbies a lot and never stick to one. I hope to stick to this one, though; I’m in too deep! I hope to make a doll series with these superheroes based on my friends and me and the rainbow spectrum.

I am taking this course because it is a requirement for my degree, but I hope I learn a lot in this class. I’m not sure of many topics to cover, but I hope we watch exciting movies that explain different aspects of this class. Currently, I’m obsessing over Disney’s Encanto. I’ll add a bit of Encanto and how it connects with our Hispanic/Latinx heritage. I think it’d be great to watch in class since it is a matriarchal family, and the women are in control in the town. The men take the last names, surrounded by the women in the family. It’s fascinating, and I hope we get to see it in class. In this movie, Disney explored different approaches in the Latinx/Hispanic community, especially when they learned that the women are in control and not the men.

    Hi Jada,

I enjoyed reading your introduction. Thank you for sharing your cultural background with us. I hope you successfully become a zoologist because I can tell from your reading how passionate you are about it. Hopefully as we go throughout the semester, we will engage with one another and learn more about our Selfs and interest.

    Hi Jade!

You want to be a zoologist, huh? That’s so cool! I love animals (I’m sure you already gathered that from my introduction post, haha). I LOVE animal crossing, too! We’re both into improvising fun things with our friends – we are really similar, after all!

As soon as I read that you’re into doll customization, I squealed in my desk chair. It’s a hobby I’ve been interested in for the longest time – one of my favorite youtubers is Dollightful, you should definitely check out her stuff (if you haven’t already!) – I think it’s super cool that you’re actually doing it. I would absolutely love to see your dolls!

I have literally seen Encanto 5 times. I love it so much! I agree that it would be really great to watch it in class!

I would love to get to know you more and maybe talk (if you want)! It’d be nice to make a new friend, and I feel like we have so much in common! My personal email is paulina.alessandra@gmail.com! 🙂

    Sincerely,
    Paulina

    Hello there Jade!

A career in Zoology sounds incredibly interesting! Have you always wanted to be a zoologist? I love animals myself!
Regarding ordering a package and not receiving it… that sounds awful. I would be upset but one thing that truly grinds my gears is like you said, rude people. Working in the customer service industry made me realize just how many people do not have manners.
The doll customization sounds like fun, and just so you know I think having a plethora of hobbies can allow you to grow to deeply understand yourself!
I am also eager to learn in this course and if we do happen to watch a film, I hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoyed Disney’s “Encanto.”

If you ever want to chat about this class or anything, I’m here!

Jade, it is very nice to meet you. I started playing D&D a few years ago, but I didn’t keep up. It is a lot of research! I enjoyed it and the chance to inhabit other characters, though. Perhaps I will get back to it. What is your major? I wonder because you said this course is required. I’m also thrilled to read your report on Encanto. My 5-year-old nephew went to see it in the theatre as his first EVER movie theatre experience. I think he was overwhelmed by the whole thing because the report he gave me on the movie was mostly about how he ate an entire bag of popcorn. I am thrilled to read about the feminist under (or over) tones in it — that will move it closer to the top of my viewing list for sure.

PS I love the idea of the dolls customized to represent you and your friends as superheroes.

    Hi Jade!
I admire all art forms and am excited to hear you mention your hobby of doll customization. I’ve watch many YouTube videos of this and find the intricacies of it amazingly beautiful. It requires so much patience and skill and that is admirable. I also love your suggestion of Encanto. I like that Diney is making a shift towards more inclusive representation in movie, and expanding their content beyond the narrative of a princess being saved
I saw a video recently that you might enjoy, that includes both of these ideas. It’s a doll customization of Isabel Madrigal from Encanto.
