Aleah Alamo – Discussion 7

All of the discussions and material we’ve reviewed so far has really changed my perspective on many things. And opened my eyes to many things as well, like trans rights and activism. Not being part of the lgbtq community made me overlook certain issues. As we discussed in this class, most people don’t think about certain issues unless they experience it themselves. The weekly readings, videos, and discussions made me aware of so many social issues that I’ve never even thought of or considered because they weren’t specifically targeted toward myself. This is so amazing because after being made aware, I can be more considerate and conscious about it in the future. And hearing my classmates perspective and personal experience help to reinforce the materials we’ve gone over. Week six was impactful for me as well. I knew activism was hard work but seeing and reading about the behind the scenes efforts highlighted how hard it really is. Learning about all of these social issues and how intertwined they are in society reflects the hard work that needs to be done to create change.

    Hi Aleah,

    Really important how you mentioned that people don’t care about certain topics or problems if it hasn’t happened to them directly. I think that’s why more uncomfortable conversations must happen in order for people to realize that just because it didn’t happen to you, doesn’t mean you don’t stand up for those who are affected.

    Good morning Aleah, I to can understand what you mean when you say all the social issues, discussions and videos and I have never really experienced most of these issues but when I hear my peers talk about them sometimes I think like how come that has never happened to me, not saying I want it to. What makes me so different from everyone else? I mean maybe that’s not the way to look and things, but I am happy because most of the the stories I do hear are very heartbreaking.

    Hearing my classmate’s perspective on the things we talk about weekly is interesting. We all come from different backgrounds, we have different options on some discussions then there are times we agree with each other and come to the same conclusions. When I’m wrong or I misunderstand things, I appreciate the people who call me out or speak up questioning my beliefs.

    I think that is one of the biggest takeaways from this class and learning about oppression/activism;
    “Most people don’t think about certain issues unless they experience it themselves.”
    very very true. i think there is a tendency to think “well it isn’t bothering me why should i waste my time on that and make it part of my problem?” We need to spread more compassion in this world. where we start to expand our attention to things beyond those that personally affect us.

    Hey Aleah,
    I have to agree with you when you said that the material we were given has changed my point of view on certain topics. I even feel like I have been learning new things and relearning what I thought I knew. This class has opened my eyes to seeing just how powerful activism is and how oppression impacts us. How the power of knowledge and speaking up can bring many together to demand a change that is necessary.
