Moving Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok means to live in the world as a person who does not belong on a side of the traditional gender binary – meaning strictly a woman or a man. Gender identification may play an important role in the defense of the gender/sex binary in two main ways. First, it may average reactions to different types of policies and practices that challenge the gender/sex binary, and second, it may be involved with gender/sex binary maintaining testament more generally. One way that my gender identity goes against the binary norm is that I believe God made women for men and men for women. That is why adam and eve once existed. Ways it fits the binary norm is that I would never judge someone’s beliefs. I have families who are binary and I treat them with the same respect I treat any other person. They are still human just with a different view and belief.
Hi Heylee!
I really enjoyed reading your post. I was raised in a catholic household surrounded by many binary norms and can understand where you are coming from. I now am agnostic as I believe there is a higher power watching over us all, but not described as a God. It can be difficult to help family members see everyone as equal and human but I do want to note that non-binary and transgender people can have the same belief as you, and still be accepted by God! Adam and Eve were a mere stepping stone in gender- so that the world may progress outside of man and woman, and become more focused on just; humans.
Hi Haylee,
I would absolutely agree with your concluding point, that aside from another individuals differences treating them as if these differences are crucial along side being respectful of who that person decides to be is what truly matters at the end. This to me shows foundations of a greater social structure as far as allowing everyone to feel comfortably accepted. Growing up in church has also impacted my out looks on topics such as gender binary I would strictly come to realizing that the correct way is woman and man, man and woman which in our modern day society just is not the case.
Hello Heylee,
I enjoyed reading your discussion post because I agree with you. For someone like Alok, living in a world as a person who does not fit in with the traditional gender binary is not easy when there are social structures that directly challenge and dismiss you.
I grew up in a household that was Catholic and I was never exposed to the world outside of what we know, regarding the genders male and female. Reading the excerpts by Alok allowed me to understand that the world is much greater than what I have been taught. I feel a duty to work to unlearn what I have been taught and properly relearn.
Hi Heylee!
I enjoyed your post, the part where you mention adam and eve is interesting. I also wouldn’t judge anyone for their beliefs and I also think the way you compare it to religion is interesting. Everyone deserves respect for how they decide to identify, because it’s their identity and no one else’s!
Hi Heylee,
I really enjoyed reading your post. I like your opening when you said “Moving Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok means to live in the world as a person who does not belong on a side of the traditional gender binary – meaning strictly a woman or a man”. We are often taught that certain things are associated to either a female or a male to the point where colors like pink and blue are also used to label whether or not someone is a girl or boy. I feel we should step away from this mindset and allow people to express themselves however they feel the need to express themselves in order to remain true to themselves. Clothings are just clothings and men can wear women clothing just like women can wear men clothings.
