The quote ” “a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” Meant that he defined feminism as a movement that aims to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. Feminism is a collaborate approach to issues of equality and equity based on gender and gender expression through social hypothsis and political activism. Before reading the 2 articles I belived sex and gender were in the same definition. Sex and gender can be two complicated topics. Now I understand that Sex is a biological sterotype, while gender is a social sterotype and refers to the social and cultural differences a society defiene people based on their sex. Many biological explanations for gender roles do exist, but sociologists believe that culture and socialization are more important sources of gender roles rather than biology.

    Hello Heylee,
I would like to say that I truly found Bell Hook’s essay to be insightful because she immediately clarified what the definition of feminism is, in light of the misconstrued ideas about what feminism is. She made it clear that we must first understand before we can act. Feminism is meant to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression because these are issues that are holding us back and preventing progression. Like you, many people have not always known that gender and sex are not one and the same, which is why “Sex and Gender 101” was so interesting. She made a point that sex is typically assigned based on the external genitalia, which is why some intersex people can go their entire lives without knowing they are intersex. The importance that society places on sex and gender makes situations like that occur because an individual who is intersex has their sex chosen for them at their birth. It just does not seem entirely fair. What did you find the most interesting about these readings?

Heylee, I find the definition of feminism from Bell Hook is well summary! I also agree with you that “Feminism is a collaborative approach to issues of equality and equity based on gender and gender expression through social hypothesis and political activism. ”
I am glad that after you read Sex and Gender 101 you found sex and gender are different. As you said, sex is biological and gender is more defined in a social way.
