SHEENA SANCHEZ – READING REFLECTION 7

in this reading reflection I’m thinking of everything I learned so far in this class, how much women have tolerated in this past century and how we still have this issue going on till this day. while reading how Virginia was the 38th state to pass the ERA amendment I’m still thinking how much we still have to fight to hav equal rights in this country, some people thinking that we are never comfortable and that we always as for too much but some women are still out here who was denied good wages, or denied maternity leave or being paid for it , or some women are still not treated good in their work environment. looking back on how many women risked their livelihood so that other women can have that too amazes me, how much this amendment was denied by other state because they don’t believe women should be given these rights Is just crazy to me as a women I’m glad these women fought for me to be where am at , to be able to get an education and being able to work and provide for myself as well is a blessing. reading on that factory incident made me sad because those women had to suffer because of greed that could’ve been prevented and this case reminds me of a movie called radium girls when women in the 19 century were dying because of radium and they were being lied to for the sake of the company, these places knew the dangers on radium and lied to these young girls anyways, in my opinion both of these cases were tragic and these women were failed completely , but all thought its sad it was used for a way to make laws to protect us today. it was used as an example for all of us.

the suffrage , labor and equal right amendment are all related in a similar way, examples are the suffrage amendment was passed because women had no right to vote, same with the labor right this was a huge part because of the incident in the triangle shirtwaist factory that had killed 146 workers because proper precaution was not taken to ensure the safety of those women, lastly the equal right was also proposed to make sure that both sex had equal right which brings us back to the right to vote, this law was passed because us women did not have any rights and when we did we were not protected and still not. I believe that labor right is a matter of gender because if we look at what had happened to those women in that factory that is a prime example as to why gender plays a big role, women are always overlooked and never cared for, we are ignored till we fight. some women are also not paid as much as men or have the same rights as men in the workplace also lets look at how some women are not given full maternity leave or none at all, some are required to come back to work three days after given birth and ya don’t think this is a gender thing? I mean there’s only one sex thats able to giver birth. many women were forced to stay home and not do anything till women fought really hard to be equal and till then women were not protected and still not till this day, men are still earning more than women. looking back at the factory fire that situation could’ve been prevented but since were didn’t even have rights back then the owners didn’t care enough to provide a safe environment for those girls back then. lastly I see this historical issues enacted today this way, in 2019 Virginia was one of the states to pass the ERA amendment which give equal rights to both sex, this is something that still very much an issue till this day because just not so long ago women were denied the right to an abortion and also women are still not given paid leave in some companies for maternity leaves or they are required to come back to work right away among other things. this issues are still much relevant and will continue to be if we don’t fight back.

in this weeks reading “what’s in a name? on writing the history of feminism. from my understanding of this reading is that historians took it upon themselves to name everything women do in the name of feminism , its true that we been fighting for the longest to have equal rights because for as long as we can remember women been treated even worse than animals, we been beaten , abused, raped and killed for absolutely no other reason than because we women and its unfair to think that these called historians love to try to shame us with that word by saying that everything we do is feminism. but in the other hand because these women had come up with the word feminism a lot of change came with it, women were allowed to do things they never thought they could, they could open banks and go to school and have equal opportunities as men and that’s something we thought we’ll never see happen, any aggression against women is also illegal which is amazing because this was not a big deal almost a century ago. but now women are struggling even more because we are seen as do it all and some women are struggling financially and these are problems that are overlooked because if we fix one thing another collapses , in a way we still gonna be fighting this battle for.years to come because we are seen as beings who are here for the well of others but not for our own , we are here to make others progress but we cannot and when we do we our put hundreds of obstacles in our way.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – DISCUSSION 7

when it comes to writing freely I honestly don’t know what to write but what I can say is I’ve learned so much from this class when it comes to feminism and oppression and privilege. when I first came to the United States I had no idea the meaning behind this words and even when I asked people the would give me their definition of it. but the older I got the more I understood what each of this words mean because I came face to face with it. I had seem some privilege first hand and racism and all sorts of things , I had come face to face with misogynist people and their taboo ideas and it hit me like wow this sort of things is what feminist fight for. I wanted to take this class to learn more about women and I definitely did, I learned from our beginning when we started fighting for our equal rights , and what other women from all over the world do as well to fight for this on a daily basis till this day just like In the reading ” what’s in a name? on writing the history of feminism how we been fighting for equally since the 60s and we would continue to do so till we are treated with equal love and respect .

SHEENA SANCHEZ – discussion 6

Based on the questions I believe that activism is a starting a movement to change something. it could be a social problem, a law , injustice of any kind and so on. I had seen activism in videos and basically our whole society is where it is if it wasn’t because of someone taking the initiative to fight for change. just like one day a women decided we should all vote, we should all go to school and study the same as everyone else we should all work equal jobs with equal pays. one day someone had enough and that’s what I think its the best part about it. I was watching the film Girl Connected and it was very emotional , inspiring and sad all together. through the film we see 5 girls from 5 different countries fighting for a cause some of them with help and some alone. the all fighting against the discrimination of women, one of the girls from Bangladesh tries to fight against young girls getting married to older guys without their consent this specific topic had me emotional because no child should ever go through that kind of traumatic experience. I see another girl trying to educate and involve others on practicing safe sex and how to use protection even at a young age. another girl trying to go to college despite being told that girls don’t study engineer. after reading the text and watching this film I opened my eyes more the many injustices going on but not only that I was inspired to find ways to support it as well and I think that’s the magic of activism . these girls have more than likely inspired me to support them In this activism and that’s pretty much what it is, is to fight for a change and inspire others to join and do the same . I had shared some post and talked to others about injustices that goes on around the world and I try to educate my friends and family about it so they can help as well, although I have not marched or gather up people and go to people’s houses and tell them about this fight ill like to think that in a way I was part of an activism movement just by sharing a few post and inspire others to do the same. I’ll like to think this is my tiny portion of help.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – READING REFLECTION.

Before this class I had heard of activism, I feel like have heard of this word at least once in our life. many of the things we have today like laws were all passed because of an activism movement. just now in my English class I’m learning about the activism movement of Martin Luther King, rosa parks, and many more. how in a time of segregation he fought to have that law lifted cause we should all be treated equal no matter our skin color. in this class reading the excerpts from “how to think like an activist” made me think more in about what should be done and what it takes. many women have taken the initiative to start a movement to fight against something that doesn’t seem fair. in the reading it talks about how activism is different and in a way better now because we have social media, we can post photos or videos and we can use hashtags like the BLM movement . I was thinking how this reminded me of the activist movement that’s going on in Mexico , these are women fight for a cause , they fighting against femicide. in Mexico hundreds of women go missing everyday, some days they turn up dead , rare times they come back alive and most likely they would never be found. many women are using hashtags and peaceful protest for the government to do something about this, many times women who are protesting whether is peaceful are not end up in jail or detained just for being there. every year on women’s day thousands of women march for a cause and that’s the mind of an activist , educating others on topics the have little to no knowledge of and try to come all together to fight injustice. that’s what I understand that an activist Is.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – READING REFLECTION 4

reading this two text opened my eyes a little. I had an idea of what oppression was from our last few readings but reading about someone’s experience hits different. when she explains how it is for a black and lesbian women in the 80s its a hard world because just then some things were still not acceptable for black people let alone lesbian. same with the text by Allan G. Johnson when its explained how patriarchy is a system and not a single person kind of problem . I mean yes sometimes we like to believe that a single men who’s misogynistic is “the ” problem but its bigger than that . it’s the system that taught this “man” that acting the way he does its okay.

Allen G. Johnson says “In general, a system is any collection of interrelated parts or elements that we can think of as a whole” I was taught that men are this perfect humans that we have to worship just like we worship our god, and that us women have to follow along and listen. just now I learned that this system its different parts of a whole car in a sense. our personal acts and believes makes a part of it, the way we think and act puts a part into that, the institutional part of it that consist of laws and whatnot. the cultural one where we were taught since we were children how male and women are supposed to act a certain way and if that’s not the case we would be judge by those around us.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – DISCUSSION 5

before I read the text by Allan G. Johnson I had this idea that patriarchy was solely blamed on men only. I had my suspicion that some women had misogynistic mentality based on the way they was raised and how it was implemented on them growing up which has a lot of similarity to some of the text by Johnson. so why is it important to view patriarchy as a system and not as an individual identity. its important to view it as a whole and not as a piece of it for many reasons starting with all of has at least once contributed to it , whether we realized it a the moment or not we was once a tiny piece of it just adding into it more. its important to realize this because the patriarchy its a big system that was accustomed into our lives a long Time ago. if we only look to blame one individual as the problem we forget to hold accountable the millions of not only men but women as well for their contribution to this systematic problem.

if we only blame men alone we are enact on it as well. we are letting women believe that only the men are the problem without looking at the bigger picture and we are letting them believe that only men can and are misogynist when in fact some women are part of the problem as well. don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that women are the problem but some are taught from a very young age that acting a certain way is lady like and we should do as we told and some of those women judge other women who don’t do the same misogynist idea that were taught onto them.

as it was mentioned in the reading many things that are happening right now contribute to it. movies and shows and news , pretty much everything around it. its like Allen G. Johnson said ”

The key to understanding any system is to identify its various aspects and how
they are arranged to form a whole.” it’s not just politicians and movies is you and me and everyone who sees a women being yelled at by her husband and we do nothing about it cause we don’t want problems. its also acknowledging that our personal feelings and thoughts also contribute to this system, its when we judge women for getting abortions, or when we judge mother’s who are tired but not the father for helping. if all of us contribute to make a difference in this ideas we can all bring down this system.

I realized it was bigger than us when last year a law was passed that women who are more than 6 weeks cannot legally get an abortion in the state of Texas. that not only older man had a say in this but women as well who believed that women didn’t have the right to do what they pleased with their bodies and other people did.

Sheena Sanchez – reflection 2

before today I had never heard of alok Vaid manon but I had always been aware of the struggles that people from the LGBTQIA2S+ faces, I had many friends from a very young age who were afraid of what people would say if they ever came out. it was sad because I could in a way feel they terror. reading some parts of the books made me remember those awful moments that my friends experienced. I also agree on many parts that in today’s society everything is about control and how we are seen as rule breakers when we do something outside of the box, I say we because I am bisexual and from my experience when I came out to my mother she looked at me like I was a disgrace it felt awful and I couldn’t understand why she felt that way when nothing about me changed but only the people that I liked. and that’s something that’s explained in they book. often times people from older generations are not used to the idea that some things change and the believe thinks should be the same way even for us who are growing up with more freedom than ever, but we are still forced to act a certain way and dress a certain way to prove that we are worthy of acceptance . I disagree I agree that people should do whatever makes them happy as long as its not affecting anyway In a negative way. I believe this book its a good way for people to think a little outside the box and see things from the community’s eyes.

Sheena Sanchez – discussion 2 –

before I read a chapter of the book feminist politics I had heard of the word feminism before I heard of definitions of it but never truly understood what it meant as a women. I come from a women and I am a women yet I was never sure what being a feminist meant. then later on I heard someone say that feminism is basically a word made up by women who started to fight to have equal rights as men. that women thought that if we both are humans why should men be leaders what gave them the right to decide that we women are weak , that we should follow the man and never be a leader that women we born to breed and cook and take beatings from their husband because they took the bread home and all they did was sit home all day. what I understood from this quote ” a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” is that being a feminist is a movement to end being judge because of our sex, being exploited because we are women and being oppressed and told what to do with our own bodies because we were born with a female genital at least that’s what I’m getting from this quote. what this quote and the definition of feminism means are kinda different to me now because before my definition of it was different I thought that it meant just being allowed to do the same thing that men do but its not just that, is being able to being free and do as we pleased without the judgement that we can’t do it simply because we women. how we have to dress a certain way to be respected , how we gotta talk a certain way if we want to be listened . everyday we combat sexism and we try out best to end it . how we fight to be equal in a way that doest let men determine our worth. lastly reading sex and gender 101 made no different as I had already an idea of what gender was excluding pansexual and cisgender those two definitions is definitely something new to learn because I had always heard of those words but not the definition of It . I also learned that gender doest necessarily means that’s who we are It just defines our sex but not our personality , how even if we have sex with the same gender doesn’t mean it changes out sexuality its just something some people like to try at least once in their life.
