SHEENA SANCHEZ- REFLECTION 13

the news about abortion being banned like I said in my previous post made me heartbroken. I know how little support us woman get with everything going on this is as bad as it can get. I hope this doesnt become effective considering many lives will be at risk if it do. I wish other people would put themselves in these woman shoes and try to feel their pain. no woman wishes to abort a child and I speak on personal experience as well, it is a sad situation to be in but it sometimes needs to be done. other times woman may have stillborn wich is still considered an abortion althought women can not control the outcome. many women get abortion from different reason but one of the mains one would be religion among other reasons as well. many young woman also go through horrible life experiences like S/A that makes them seeks this kind of procedures. reading about rebecca gomperts made me so happy I was happy for her and I felt happiness for the woman she was helping this cause is a very thoughtful one because she donates a lot of these medication to woman who cannot pay. shipping and making its way to the womans house is a beautiful way to help our sisters who are going through difficult times to try and get these procedures done in a safe enviroment. as well as the abortion line who tries to help woman come up with some of the money to get it done and its usually women of lower income.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – DISCUSSION POST 14

this weeks reading is something I been waiting for us to discuss and im glad that we are able to before the end of this class. hearing the news about this decision thats about to take place really broke my heart. millions of women right now are scared because is still very difficult to get an abortion either way because the cost is outrages but to being scared to be prosecuted as well is something women do not need to go through because I believe we all have the human right to do as we please with our body. my reaction was sadness I felt for our women who will have to fight to have some rights in this country as discussed in our previous post women who are denied these rights are not considered citizens but half citizens. I have been learning about this news thankfully to all the women in my social media who have been sharing post, signing petitions and going to protest. I believe abortion should be a right that everywomen deserves. we are not only allowing women to make decisions for themselves but we might be saving their lives along the way. many women get abortions for many different reasons like the women in the video on the abortion line many of these women are in abusive relations who do not wish to bring babies in this world to suffer others might bring sick babies into the world to suffer as well and many suffer from medical conditions that might result in their death if they proceed with the pregnancy. the part that really left me speechless about this whole situation is the last few mins of the video when hyde confirms that he wants poor women to give birth to babies because they are defesenless but what about the millions of children who are in foster care? what about their life? this is just something to think about. right now the united states is going through a shortage of baby food which is something to think about before banning abportion how are these women supposed to feed their babies if they are not able to breast feed? many women cannot medically do it cause it can cause harm to the newborn. bring a baby into this world is just someting that needs to be carefully thought about because its a big responsability for many women who are for exmaple in college or underage girls navigating thought life.

Sheena Sanchez – reflection 12

in this week’s reading I learned about the actual meaning behind artistic activism. I had heard this wording before but I didnt know what it actually meant considering I learned about it when I was In high school. art is a way for artists of all kind to express themselves and like it was explained in the reading sometimes its hard to understand them or see their point of view but depending on the arm with sometimes feel how they feel wether is joy or pain, whatever the case might be. reflectin on this readings I understand better that a simple thing can be considered artistic activism. I see a lot of them on my instagram sometimes when artist talk about an active problem through their drawing and I would understand it without even having any words. now days is simple to come up with something and share it on social media and it could be a drawing or video or a poster just talking about a problem you wish more people would know about. back then about 70 or 80 years ago when our ancestors were alive the only way they would see this kind of art would be through newspaper or in a march where people held posters expressing their feelings and how it can be changed. now days with all this technology is so much easier to share with all these social media apps. whenever soemthing is happen I quickly get updated on it because of social media because tons of my friends share it, its amazing how technology can be so helpful when it comes to fighting for a cause. I always loved art but unfortunately I am not gifted enough to come up with something on my own to express my feelings about the situation us women are going through.

this picture was taken by artist marilyn minter in 2020. to me its an artistic activism because this was made by her to target the problem women are facing today when it comes to a right for abortion, the wording its a bit vulgar but for those of us who understand knows the meaning behing it. right now the supreme court has overthrown the right for an abortion. abortion is more than just getting rid a of fetus, is healthcare and it shouldnt be overthrown by men because they dont own a female reproduct organ to begin with. I sympathize with this topic because getting an abortion saved a friend’s life, and women should feel safe enough to do whats best for them physically and emotionally as well as mentally without the goverment intervening.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – READING REFLECTION 11

This week reading reflection was so sad for me and it opened my eyes to the reality around the world. sometimes we are so lucky and privileged to live the way we do that we often forget how good we have or at least thats my case. while watching the documentary period, I was sad to see how many women did not know what a pad was. its mainly because in india periods are not a topic of concern for women. I believe all women around the world should have the. right to education and proper hygiene. we did not choose to be born with a uterus so why should women be punished for it? as for the readings, I have always heard stories about african american women experiecing racism in the medical field which is why we should advocate to have more african american doctors and nurses etc. I have always heard about this taboo that doctors believe that african Americans dont feel pain as much as other races and it sounds absurd and racist to even think about. everyone should be entitled to proper care and not to be scared that someone might be killed because of negligence. to finish this topic it was even more absurd that transgender people were experienceing this kind of things because all doctors swore an oath to protect people no matter their race or gender and to think that because of religious belief these people are being denied medical is horrible and sad we all deserve the right to medical care.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – DISCUSSION 12

this weeks reading was a little sad and overwhelming because I had to learn about other peoples struggles that were not as known to me. I for starters want to commment on the readings as well as the films and to begin one of the things that surprises me the most about it was about learning and how they struggle with their periods and how taboo it is in india. it was sad to see how women were dropping out of school for something so simple like getting their period. second while reading a birth story I was also surprised on how the staff treated the patient and made her walk it was for sure unethical and disrespectful to let a women who just gave birth just push her baby and IV, as a mom I myself gave birth via vaginal and I remember who I couldnt walk for three dues and it was all natural and no C-section so I must imagine how humiliating and painful that experience must have been for the mother and her husband. and as for the third story I honestly find it surprising that this law is being considered at all because for one trasgender people still human beings, they are somene’s daughter or son , someone’s brother or sister they still human beings why are they being treated like outcast is horrific. I believe we all deserve some respect and given the right treatment we all deserved despite our race or gender. one connection I can find is the descrimination african Americans and the LGBTQ community faces in the medical field. while reading both articles I learned about the disctimination and racism they face, women in the medical field are dismissed when they shared their concerns while people in the LGBTQ community are also dismissed and denied medical help simply because of their sex. also the film and the labor story both have something in common and is that women experience discrimination for simply being women. to finalize the format in which these stories were shared felt surreal watching the documentary and seeeing the women’s reaction to seeing a pad the first time felt heartbtreaking because sometimes we dont know how hard other’s have it. and the birth story being ilustrated as well was sad seeing how african american women are treated in the medical field is horrific. lastly seeing comments from transgender people from all over the country was touching because we got to read their experience first hand.

SHEENA SANCHEZ- REFLECTION 1O

in this weeks reading I came to learn what power means in this country and how we are mostly ruled by people in higher power who are mostly white. in the reading by Garza she talks about power and how power rules this country. but this power comes mostly from white men. identity politics is a way for a certain group to identify themselves based upon their gender or any other factor that comes into play. now thinking things throughly we see how finding identity is important in many ways because when William’s went to school and didn’t made friends people assumed her race because of her skin color and it just seems that in the United States , color and race are a big thing and people seem to care a little too much about it. back to the reading by Garza she talks about how women of color had to find a way to find freedom because no one would fight for them considering other groups found benefits in their oppression like black men, white women and white men, she explains “identity is the elephant in America’s room” (Garza, page 189) . it seems like its not a big deal but it is , its a way for them to classify people for them to see who’s valuable and who’s not. black women in specific had the worse response to this considering black women are seen as the Lowest of the lowest in the pyramid. she continues to explains how the freedom of slaves benefited men more than it did to women but black women had to still experience both racism and sexism from both white and black men and white women. power only benefits one group which is white and while other’s like to make it seem like its a matter of blame who and things are been a little reached it is not.

SHEENA SANCHEZ – DISCUSSION 11

this weeks reading opened my eyes to some things, now I have read last weeks reading on women of color who decided to come up with their own group to fight against racism and sexism and its kind of what this reading talks about. now in these reading these ladies talk about the importance of identification when it comes to politics and whatnot. the reading by Garza was interesting in a way that she explains why as black women is important to identify themselves from other groups, back when they first stated the feminist movement black women were not welcome by white women because in reality white women were only fighting for themselves and not for all women. she explains how in order to understand what identity of politics is we first have to look at what power is and how its all connected in the same way. moving onto the next reading by Williams and how she talks about the racism she faced because people believed she was black and not hispanic because of her skin color and some thought she was too hispanic to be black because of her culture and language all these combine expanded my knowledge a bit more that in this country identification is a big thing. although we don’t feel the need to be put in an specific group we oughta to because thats what most people are accustomed to , that in order for us to been seen or heard or understood we first have to explain our identity.

SHEENA SANCHEZ-REFLECTION 9

This weeks readings was really interesting once again, I Never knew that black women had their own separate organization for feminist back in the 70s although I’m not surprised, but one would think that since all women are fighting for the same cause , white women would put aside their ignorant mentality for something greater, reading that essay made sad as well as proud of how much black women were and continued to accomplish till this day. I had read and also seen something about black women working with the panthers but I wasn’t sure if it was within them or a separate organization. black women being victims of both sexism and racism is something that breaks my heart these women had endure the same fate that black men did and yet there were no sign of respect given to them by the same men that saw them being tortured and abused. seeing how despite the disrespect given to them black women still fought besides black men is something be admire because that takes a lot of strength to fight against your own enemy In Times of needs and when I say enemy I mean it in the way black men show sexism toward black women. this also leads me to burning in Paris seeing black gay men fight for their own battles agains homophobia in NYC, not only this but as well as the epidemic of HIV/AIDS that was going on in the communities . these people were not given the resources they needed for their own protection which could’ve been somewhat prevented, but again some communities don’t always receive help from others especially an all black community .

SHEENA SANCHEZ- DISCUSSION 1O

the combahee river statement left me a lot to think about, discussing how black women went through a lot of struggles back then and still do now is something to think of, you would think back then because women were all fighting for the same cause some sort of respect would be given to all but I guess that was not the case for back women. they still had to fight for racism as well as sexisms. the following quote ” we might use our position at the bottom to make a clear leap into revolution action.  If black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all ” to men this quote symbolizes how black women where seem to be placed at the very bottom of everything , they would still fight to make sure that those women who were placed last had someone fight for their right as well. black women who were victims of racism from white men and women and also were victims of sexism from their black men had no one to fight for them till a black group of feminist came along considering white women were fighting for the rights of their fellow whites. to answer the following quote “identity politics”? I believe it means that women identify themselves within politics meaning they called themselves the national black feminist organizations to have their own way of being represented to the public while they were fighting for thousands of black women all over the country, and I see this too in the documentary Paris is burning how black gay men found a way to identify themselves as drag queens among other things so they public knew how to and how they should be addressed and not how everyone decided to called them. not so long I go I too watched a tv show very similar to this documentary that show how many gay black men struggled a lot with racisms and oppression back in the 90s as well as disgust from their family members because of what they chose to be, also not to mention how many people in the community died and struggled with HIV/AIDS. I believe race and gender have something to contribute to capitalims if women hadn’t fought for their rights we wouldn’t have women working which adds more to the capitalism of this country as well as race, why? because if it wasn’t because of black people that were used as slaves this country wouldn’t be where it is right now which again contributes a lot to the capitalist of this country. our economic system relies heavily on African Americans and immigrants.
