I really enjoyed reading the “Feminist Politics where we stand”, because it taugh me alot about feminism that I did not fully understand. For instance, during reconstruction many white men in America accepted women into the workforce. Nevertheless only because it was either the women or the black men. The tale as old as time, whites did not want blacks involved in anything. I found this to be interesting because there are two issues people in America have to face. The equality of race and women. The most important thing I learned is that being sexist does not define feminism. I think that many of us fail to understand. Being a feminist doesn’t meam anti men or showcase why women are better than men. However it is more about showcasing how women are equal to men. “Sex and Gender 100” is more like a knowlegde refresher. I think the most important concept is to understand that sex and gender are different. Sex is someone’s biological identitation, in regards to their chromosomes and sexual organs. How a person physically appear from birth. Gender is how a person views themselves in a social setting. The sex of a person may be different from their gender and that is ok.

After reading this piece about feminist politics, the word means to me that women who want equality to do anything a man can do. Whether it be in the workplace, in the house setting, or politically. Over the years, the word “Feminism” has been altered to different meanings. Everyone believed that a feminist needs to hate and be angry with men, or that it had more to do with being sexist, which is not the case at all. The article states,”as women realized that males were not the only group in our society who supported sexist thinking and behavior that females could be sexist as well.” This proves that feminism has nothing to do with sexist men, because women can also be just as sexist as men. Before reading this book, my definition on feminism has completey shifted. I thought being a feminist means to one up men in any chance I get. To showcase why women were better at being the breadwinner of the difficult situation. I believe men should be subordinate to us, being we are the important and smarter human beings. When in reality men and women should be equal in everything society has to offer us. There is no superior gender.
The reading “Sex and Gender 101” was kind of was I thought. Sex and gender are completey two different definitions. The article states, “sex refers to anatomy and pshysiology.” My definition was sex refers to our bioglocial body parts. A penis meant a person had female sex chromosomes. Gender to me means how a person wants society to identify them as more importantly how they view themselves. What I learned from this article is the word “Intersex”. The text says, “There are several different sex chromsome variations that intersex persons can have” I find this to be very interesting, for the simple fact that a male can have xx chromosomes and reproductive organs but has male parts. I never thought this was possible or even real. I heard stories about it from people, however, I did not believe it. I also find it fascinating and I have so many questions. How does this come to be or is it hereditary. What are daily struggle one has to experience with being intersex person. Can this stop them from doing certain activities or being able to have children the natural way? Overall, I enjoyed reading these two pieces, it taught me the value of what it means to be a feminist and the difference between Sex and Gender.
Discussion Post 1: Shanice Peters
My name is Shanice Peters. I am 19 years old and this is my second year at BMCC. My pronouns are she/her. To be honest, I don’t like Bmcc, so far my experience has been a never-ending list of horrible professors. I received my first F in college last semester and I was feeling down about it. Especially since it was out of my control. Nevertheless, I was not going to let one F keep me down any longer. I cried about it but now I am ready to kill education with my brilliance. I believe one of my best qualities is that I am known as a social butterfly, who comes home to be alone just to listen to music in my thoughts. I love to engage in interesting conversations and make others laugh. Someone once told me “ Shanice if you don’t become a comedian then I don’t know” Music is probably the best thing humans ever created. It tells stories of people who go through hard times or good times. It is like therapy for not only the mind but the soul. My life long dream has always been to become a Nurse Practitioner. Especially for children and mothers. Which brings me to Bmcc and to this class here today. GWS 100 is one of the courses I need to be one step closer to becoming a nurse practitioner. I am not familiar with gender women studies, however I hope to learn more about the study of women. How we think, why we think the way we do, the importance of what makes a woman, etc. I’m more of a visual learner, very hands-on down and dirty type of gyal. I don’t believe I am the smartest person but if I keep a positive attitude and work hard, I can be on the level of whoever the smartest person is. I also want to major in psychology and English. Growing up I’ve had a passion for creative writing and writing poetry. I am currently in the process of writing my first ever poetry book. Becoming a therapist is kind of new to me. I enjoy listening to others speak when they feel like no one else hears them. I want others to have me as a listening ear. I hope we all pass with flying colors, Good luck to everyone!
