Jazmine Hernandez Discussion 3

Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon, was very interesting and detailed. I’ll be honest growing up I only thought there was only male and female. I honestly didn’t know that non-binary and non-conforming people were to different type of people. Non-conforming can be used to describe people by actions, dress, ideas and yet you could be non-binary.

What I learned from Alok Vaid-Menon is that there are more than one gender. With that being said Vaid-Menon also mentions banning them to healthcare, some outings, and I didn’t even know they banned them from donating blood. I feel that at a young and mature age children should know the difference and understand all gender roles. People will always have an opinion for everything and will pick you apart no matter what, that is just life.

How does my gender identification differs from the gender norm ? I like to dress comfortable in baggy/men’s clothing. Which means I’m not a very big fan of dressing girly, or wearing makeup often. Even for events I’d prefer to wear dress pants rather than a skirt and some say I don’t dress like a female should or I’m too masculine. I like the way I am, I’m not too feminine nor too tomboy or masculine.

Another way I go against the norm is I’m very straight-forward about what I want or don’t want and what I like and don’t many have told me I come off as an asshole or too demanding but I’m not. Yet, if this was vice versa and a man has the same characteristics he’s confident, bold, and some may even say attractive.

Jazmine Hernandez- Discussion 2

What I understood from the quote “a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” is to fight for equality. hat I didn’t know was that there was more to that such as establishing a political, economic, personal, and social equality. between both sexes. Although it’s about having equal rights and opportunities, it’s about having a level of respect for our experiences, identities, and empower women of all rights. Personally, I feel no one is better than the other. Therefore, men and women are capable of doing anything. We all deserve to be equal no matter who we are. After reading Sex and Gender 101, I had a better understanding between them, such as ” there are several different sex chromosome variations that intersex persons can have.” I believed choosing a gender was just based on personality and how you portrait yourself. I also think society pressures us at a young age to act the gender we are assigned with at birth and in many cases can be uncomfortable for many who don’t accept how they are born. Many of these problems wouldn’t be an issue if things like femininity wasn’t assigned sex of masculinity as well.

Jazmine Hernandez – Disscussion 1

Hello ! My name is Jazmine I am a Liberal Arts major, a sophomore at BMCC , and my last semester with BMCC. (If it works well for me ) I am turning 21 in May, I am a full time student and full time worker. I currently work for a hospital Mount Sinai and it can be very over whelming and frustrating when trying to balance school and work. On my free time I’ve decided to read more books in a year, I recently read “Where the Crowdads Sing” by Delia Owens 10/10 great book! I am currently now reading ” They Both Die in the End” by Adam Silvera. This year I want to have more goals such as being more organized with things and manage my time better, (in which any advice is would be great). As a liberal arts major I’ve been deciding on changing my major to Criminal Justice or Social Work due to my experiences. I’ve been working in medical fields since I started working and decided helping people is something I enjoy doing and still trying to find a passion within Criminal Justice and Social work. I am taking this course because I want to learn more about gender and women. In today’s world this is a big topic and I’m interested in having a deeper understanding and perspective.
