There is no hierarchy in oppression, Lorde shares her personal struggles and all the many oppressions she had to go through. Going into patriarchal cultures and how it’s put us where we are living in today’s society is sad and terrifying. Patriarchy is just men making any and all decisions towards women. Many believed and still do that women should not be equally superior. Which isn’t fair we all should have the ability to have freedom and achieve what we want equally.

Reading the articles and video really made me sit and be aware of the privilege I do have and that I should absolutely be grateful. Not everyone has the same experiences as me. Privilege is earned not given (for some). I’ve faced oppression and mainly by my age and race. Both authors were very detailed and really pinned pointed all the facts of what’s really going on presently. Men and women face oppression daily and this is something that we need to fight for, equality. Authors like Frye and Peggy are true definitions of educating us and impacting us in hopes that one day this something that can make a huge difference.

The Gender Beyond by Alok was very enjoyable. I like the way he expressed who he truly was. It’s sad that many people don’t see others perspective in situations like this. We live in a world full of hate crime, and for what? I related to Alok when he mentioned he was bullied for being who he was, because as a young girl (generally speaking), growing up I didn’t really dress feminine and was always questioned and picked on as I was in a catholic school the majority of school years so I definitely felt like an outcast based on how I dressed and expressed myself. It pains me to see that there are people out there that really view these great people simply for how we choose to express ourselves.

Medical oppression is still a problem in today’s society. In the end it falls under gender and race. For example, the Minnesota story by Prairie which I found absurd yet shocking. He was being questioned to confirm if he was trans or not, and even mentioned that he had to wear a ”EMS DO NOT RESUSCITATE” bracelet and carry a physician order in their bag. I feel like it doesn’t matter what race you are, the color or your skin, what you identify as, everyone should be entitled to healthcare and feel safe that they are going to be taken care of not afraid. Which also goes into the film “Period. End of the sentence”, which I found absolutely shocking and very inspiring to watch. It’s crazy to think they knew what a period was but their reaction to seeing a pad and having questions were just shocking. Another part was when they question the men what is a period and some didn’t have a clue, which I love that they didn’t make it seem uncomfortable rather they seem like they wanted to know what it really is. In the film these ladies were able to make and sell their own product which I found so beautiful. I feel that everyone should have access to these types of products, everywhere. I also believe everyone men and women should learn about what women go through, because it’s not embarrassing, it’s nothing to be ashamed off, and it’s natural. This is something that should be spoken more on.

This weeks reading was very interesting. According to the reading by Williams and being a black hispanic women could fall hand in hand with identity politics. Aleichia actually mentioned how moving from the big apple to a smaller town was a very drastic change for her at least culturally. Williams stated other girls didn’t like her and she spoke in their language towards her. Here is how identity politics fall in place, as the story goes on Williams continues by explaining how no one believed she was latina because of her skin color. Not to mention she was despised by women like her just for the color of her skin. In my opinion, identity politics main focus is based on your race, sex, culture, and religion. As the second reading “Identity Politics” by Alicia Gracia , she spoke on her perspective on this topic. She mentions a blonde girl that she had seen in the same bar as her intoxicated and speaking to people in the bar to get her thoughts out on how we should all be equal and forget oppression. Now, in this chapter she explains that it’s not something we can move on and forget that it happened. As a matter of fact it isn’t spoken about very often, in which it should. It was and is a big part in history. You have to understand the story behind black oppression and work together to have that equality.

After reading the text “The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm” it became interesting to me. Author Koedt goes to mention women’s vagina’s aren’t sensitive and can’t orgasm by the vagina and. The assumption of men believing they have the power to give us the satisfaction which in case is true but women can also. Pleasure is pleasure according to Anne. Even though the clitoris is a women’s pleasure, sometimes we can be left unsatisfied just for a man in which the make as if they came. Where as Mainardi argues the same within her own article and personally I feel that today’s society is really all about men satisfying themselves through sex and as women we are the ones to go through the consequences and still do to this day.

I believe liberated women are those who refer themselves as feminist who support and fight for equality for women. The second wave women’s right movement impacted in women’s experience such as work, family, sexuality and politics. The women liberation increased their fight in the 1970 gender discrimination is banned in most education departments. Liberated women worked more on freedoms that were based on desires. Women protested ideas that were traditional as pants, natural makeup, and beauty. The meaning to “the personal is political” is that women liberation isn’t political because of men. A liberated women is free from societies sexist being enforced. Both articles were interesting, “the Politics of Housework” is more of personal and sexual view in households which is “personal is political”. They did what they pleased and what they did what was best for themselves. In article “The Myth of Vaginal orgasm” Anne explains women having orgasms. While men have way more satisfaction than women who have more steps to being pleased.

I feel like privilege is something given to us without having to go through the obstacles and earning actually earning it. It’s something that many people have and don’t deserve and it’s also what many people don’t have and do deserve it. Privilege is a benefit that many people take for granted and some actually take advantage of (if that makes sense). It bizarre that privilege is defined by the color of our skin, when in fact we are human yet unique in our own ways. Peggy went in depth about white privilege as a white women herself with these benefits. She mentioned that white people don’t believe themselves as oppressors. We need to understand our privileges and take advantage of what we do have no matter the color, race, or religion. A privilege i would say I have is definitely having good education. My parents did the best they could to support 4 of us from the roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on the table, which a lot of people may not have any of these things. Which always reminds me to be grateful for what I do have now and not what I wish I had.
In the reading “Oppression” by Frye, I feel she made good points. For example, she went and mentioned on how from childhood to men not to cry because it makes them masculine or weak. I understand now that oppression really does exist in our society and being catagorized by who we are and what we choose to be whether that’s by our color, ethnicity, and gender. Oppression is exertion of power and or control by a group or individual of power to those who don’t.
Jazmine Hernandez- Reflection 6
I feel that feminism is not a fixed meaning. Granted, every generation changes the way feminism is viewed. I thought feminism was just was fighting to have equal rights like men. I do believe that sexism, violence, discriminating women fall hand in hand. I read a classmate state that feminism can be used by women in other cultures. This video about women suffrage showed me and gave me view in their foots and how they fought for what was right. I agree with many others that believe these stories should be taught more, it’s impactful, motiving and inspiring. These women deserve so much credit and respect for standing up for what they believe in and bringing other women together to do the same.

I think its important women are still getting paid way less than men in most industries, because women get only 3 months of maternity, no months for when have a miscarriage, and because sexual assault in offices are a huge problem still and because 1 in 5 women in America alone get assaulted, and because its the system that allows this to run rampant in this country even though individuals fight against it. Women will have work harder for bigger opportunities as men wouldn’t and that is on way patriarchy exists.
