Dashira Del Rosario Reflection 1

In the reading “Sex & Gender” indicates that in most cases society defines someone’s biological gender based on the appearance of their external genitalia. External genitalia is the male’s or female’s reproductive organs. There are medications that a person can take to change their hormonal chemistry or suppress puberty. Hormonal chemistry are hormones are  chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the body. After being made in one part of the body, they travel to other parts of the body where they help control how cells and organs do their work. Now when it comes to men and women there’s a difference. Men have XY chromosomes and that develops to the male sex hormones, the testosterone, and male reproductive organs like the testes and penis. Puberty for men develops secondary sex characteristics such as facial, pubic and body hair and a deeper voice. For us females we have XX chromosomes, this develops the female sex hormones for example estrogen, and female reproductive organs like the ovaries, uterus, and vagina. Puberty for women is a bit similar to puberty for men, we have secondary sex characteristics such as breast development, pubic and body hair and wider hips. People have one mentally about gender, but “Gender refers to the social and cultural roles that males and females are expected to subscribe to based on their biological sex”. Gender identity only use to be two she or he but now we’ve became more opened minded , if someone identifies themselves as not in line they can go by transgender or gender non-conforming. When I was reading Raising Them informs on how gender is defined and how many people identify themselves. How they are put in groups as soon as they are born, boys play with cars and girls play with barbies. Society makes people be categorize each other. When I was reading “Feminism for Everybody passionate politics” in chapter 1 the author goes into how people are sexist and are not aware that they are. Many people agree with the idea of gender equity in the workplace equal pay for equal work.

Discussion Post #1 Prompt

Hi Everyone my name is Dashira Del Rosario, I’m 20 years old, Dominican and born and raised in the bronx. From kindergarten to 8th grade I went to school here in New York but then I moved to Connecticut and did my 4 years of High school over there but when I graduated I came back to New York for college because I didn’t like Connecticut. For my free time I work at Zara in 42nd & 5th Ave I spend most of my time there. I Would like to get into the gym for this semester to keep myself really busy because it keeps my mind busy from thinking so much. Some things I like to do are, spend time with my boyfriend, my family and my friends. I like to try new foods that I’ve never had before. Some accomplishments I had in 2021 I had set for myself that I accomplished was getting my first job. Getting a job during covid was exceedingly difficult, not many were hiring and if they were requiring experience. But once I got the job, I felt like I finally had an actual responsibility, that gave me strength to get motivated to try my best to get into college. College was my second accomplishment. I graduated from high school in 2020, but I applied to colleges late, so I was not able to start in the fall semester. I almost did not make it for the spring semester either due to my high school not sending my transcript on time but luckily, they received it on time. Once I started college, I felt proud of myself because I did not have the actual college experience everyone had because of covid. I have not been in school since March of 2020. It has been two years that I have been taking classes online, I finally got that college experience I wanted. This is the most important accomplishment I had in 2021 because in my family no one had made it that far, only my mom, but she only stayed for one semester and dropped out after. This is my third semester. One future accomplishment I have for myself is being able to get into nursing for pediatrics or becoming an ultrasound technician. But overall being able to experience being in college and studying for the major i want is my biggest accomplishment so far. The pronouns I use are she/her/hers. Im taking this course because i’m curious to learn cultural and historical production of sexual difference, and the impact of feminist research.
