Bio

Brianne Waychoff, Ph.D. is an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, activist, and educator, living in New York City where they are Associate Professor of Speech, Communication, and Theatre Arts. Brianne led the creation of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program at the City University of New York, Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), and has directed the program for a number of years. They teach courses in Gender and Women’s Studies, Performance Studies, and Communication Studies. Brianne is an Open Pedagogy Fellow, creating materials and training other faculty to teach through a social justice lens with a commitment to open access.

Brianne has published in scholarly journals such as Text and Performance Quarterly, Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies, PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, and Pacific Affairs. They danced professionally with the Joffrey Ballet as a teen, and have trained in a variety of performance styles with Anne Bogart and the SITI Company, Augusto Boal, Goat Island Performance Group, and with a range of practitioners in the Japanese Avant-Dance form, butoh. Brianne is a former member of the NYC-based International WOW Company. Their performance work has been presented at professional venues and festivals throughout the United States and abroad. As a resident guest artist at schools throughout the USA, in Russia, and India, Brianne has taught workshops on creating scholarly performances, presented solo performance work, and advised students on incorporating gender-justice activism and digital technologies into their performance work. Their commitment to gender justice was acknowledged nationally in 2016 when they were invited by the White House to participate in the United State of Women Summit, celebrating the accomplishments of women and girls and making plans for the future.
