Ayleen Zapata- Discussion #7

Before, women were taught to be housewives. They had no say in what went on. Since society looks down upon women having a voice. This led to women having to be quiet. If they even thought of going against that, it wouldn’t be good for them. I was born where I have the liberty to vote, go to school, get a job, have a voice, and so on. Yes, there still are things that are unfair in this society. The women’s suffrage movement was a decades-long struggle to give women the right to vote in the United States. It took over 100 years for activists and reformers to obtain that right, and the fight was not easy: disagreements over tactics threatened to derail the cause more than once. The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, however, was eventually enacted on August 18, 1920, enfranchising all American women and stating for the first time that they, like men, deserve all the privileges and duties of citizenship. Some proponents of women’s suffrage thought that this was their moment to lobby politicians for really universal suffrage. As a result, they refused to endorse the 15th Amendment and even joined forces with racist Southerners who claimed that white women’s votes might be used to cancel out African Americans’ votes.  This information was surprising but then again one would do anything to have rights. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony established the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. They began to campaign for a universal suffrage amendment to the United States Constitution. The liberties we enjoy today are a result of all the women who were courageous enough to fight for them. We may appear to have made little progress, but we have. Any accomplishment, no matter how great or tiny, is a triumph.

Hi Sheena, I was not aware until recently that Americans were considering white women to vote in order to push black people out. This shows Americans didn’t care about women or black people. They used women in times of need, for instance when America went into the world war in 1916, women had to hold down the homefront and work jobs. Without women America in WW1 would have never recovered in the homefront Which is why I think they gave women the right to vote.

    Hi Ayleen ,

The housewife ideal shouldn’t be ashamed because it is a choice some women decide to make however it’s sad that it’s something that is weaponized by men against women. Yes! I realize that I have a privilege that many women back then didn’t have voting , going to school being activist and can participate in male dominated fields. The Women’s Suffrage is such an informative and eye opening part of history because we can read detailed accounts of women who went through those experiences at that time. It’s sad however how some countries women still cant go to school freely or can be killed for any little thing.

    Hi Ayleen,

I agree with you about how we have to thank the women before us for all their hard work. We wouldn’t be here talking about them if it wasn’t for them fighting for our right for education. I think this is why it’s important for us to keep fighting for equal rights, so that women after us can enjoy the things we didn’t, have the privileges we didn’t.

    Hello Ayleen,
I resonated with your post because I actually grew up in a household where my mother was a housewife and literally knew nothing else in life. My mother married young, at 15 years of age, and had her first child at 18. She has, since then, lived a life of raising her children and taking care of her husband while he provides for the family. Although some may see this as an ideal form of living, where your husband comes home with all of the expenses taken care of, I saw how this also oppressed her. It actually taught me to be very distinct. I started working at a young age and decided to provide for myself to the extent that I would not need a man for any finances or my luxuries. I grew fearful of that kind of household, where you would have to ask for each and every single dollar you obtained and would always stay home and not go out to work. I saw how she literally had no say when it came to money and how she became bored and lonely staying inside simply cooking and cleaning on repeat every day of her life as if she were on robot-mode.
