before I read a chapter of the book feminist politics I had heard of the word feminism before I heard of definitions of it but never truly understood what it meant as a women. I come from a women and I am a women yet I was never sure what being a feminist meant. then later on I heard someone say that feminism is basically a word made up by women who started to fight to have equal rights as men. that women thought that if we both are humans why should men be leaders what gave them the right to decide that we women are weak , that we should follow the man and never be a leader that women we born to breed and cook and take beatings from their husband because they took the bread home and all they did was sit home all day. what I understood from this quote ” a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” is that being a feminist is a movement to end being judge because of our sex, being exploited because we are women and being oppressed and told what to do with our own bodies because we were born with a female genital at least that’s what I’m getting from this quote. what this quote and the definition of feminism means are kinda different to me now because before my definition of it was different I thought that it meant just being allowed to do the same thing that men do but its not just that, is being able to being free and do as we pleased without the judgement that we can’t do it simply because we women. how we have to dress a certain way to be respected , how we gotta talk a certain way if we want to be listened . everyday we combat sexism and we try out best to end it . how we fight to be equal in a way that doest let men determine our worth. lastly reading sex and gender 101 made no different as I had already an idea of what gender was excluding pansexual and cisgender those two definitions is definitely something new to learn because I had always heard of those words but not the definition of It . I also learned that gender doest necessarily means that’s who we are It just defines our sex but not our personality , how even if we have sex with the same gender doesn’t mean it changes out sexuality its just something some people like to try at least once in their life.

Hello Sheena, I love what you have written about what feminism means to you. It is kind of like you took the words right out of my mouth. I too think being a feminist is more than just ending sexist stereotypes about women because what many don’t understand is that women too can be sexist. I am glad to hear you fully understand the meaning. I definitely agree that if a person has sex with the same sex, doesn’t mean he or she is labeled gay.
Hi Sheena, it’s true many of us didn’t have the same concept of the word feminism but we had an idea of what the word meant. Usually when some thinks about feminism they think that it’s someone who wants to have equal rights to men but it’s more to it. Feminism is more of the belief in full social, economic, and political equality for women.
I too adored Bell Hooks’ definition of feminism. I feel like in recent times the definition has become botched by radical feminists. Feminism has turned into something very ugly (due to mass media). IThe perversion that has been done to a movement that about “end(ing) sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” is disgusting. Hopefully, we can soon get back on track and end this Male-Hate narrative going around.
Hi Sheena!
I thought I was the only one that didn’t know exactly what feminism is! Feminism has been remixed in sooo many ways! Im glad to read I wasn’t the only one that thought it. Especially with the media giving it so many definitions, its so sad because its misleading everyone. I enjoyed Bell Hooks definition and now we all have a better knowledge of feminism.
Hi Sheena!!
I feel the same, I had never had a clear definition of feminism before, I didn’t understand it well either. I had heard the same thing, that it is a movement in which women fight for their rights, so that women and men are treated equally. But thanks to this assignment, after reading the lectures and some other research I did, I have much more knowledge.
