Case Studies in Chemistry

Name
Brahmadeo Dewprashad, Professor

Department
Science

Type of Leave
Fellowship Award for Improvement of teaching
Half year starting Fall 2022

Project Description
Sabbatical leave was spent studying healthcare and nutrition literature and crafting ten case studies that relate core concepts in chemistry to applications in healthcare and nutrition. In addition, for each case study, teaching notes and solutions to the case study questions were developed as such is required for submission for publication and eventual use by the larger academic community.

Students using the cases will be engaged in the learning process as the cases have scenarios and characters our diverse urban student population can identify with. In addition, the topics of the case study are ones that students will be interested in as they are of topical health and consumer concerns ranging from application of chemistry to diabetes diagnosis and treatment, cardiovascular disease diagnosis, acid stomach treatment, design of medication to treat schizophrenia more effectively, and design of artificial flavors used in baking, among others. The literature and my experience using case studies indicate that using case studies facilitates learning and develops students critical thinking skills.
