The majority of people understand diversity as a means to increase representation based on race, nationality, gender, class, age, etc., their practices are confined to hiring staff from “traditionally underrepresented ‘identity groups.’” Based on this interpretation, many organizations, including the Library Information Science profession, may hire particular individuals for diversity or employ people from certain backgrounds who will interact with others of the same or similar backgrounds. In such situations, employers assume that the knowledge about their own identity group is the main asset of these new hires. Without an effective diversity plan that is operational, such a myopic stance can be restrictive, often impeding the benefits generated by workplace diversity.
