In a statistics course, you may analyze a set of data to find the standard deviation from the mean. In a psychology course, you may analyze case studies. In this course, you will first summarize, then analyze a non-fiction text. In critical analysis essays, we closely examine texts to understand their messages, interpret their meanings, and make connections to the world around us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Your final essay should be 3 pages in length and include the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">-a summary of the text, in your own words<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">-a thesis statement followed by <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">-your interpretation of the text, with supporting evidence from the text <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Your essay should also follow <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/owl\/research_and_citation\/mla_style\/mla_formatting_and_style_guide\/mla_general_format.html\">MLA<\/a> guidelines: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>essays should be written in 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>essays should be double-spaced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>include a descriptive title<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>include name and page numbers on every page <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>include a works cited page (this is in addition to the 3 pages)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We will have a <strong>peer review<\/strong> session in class on 2\/16. Please bring two copies of your draft to class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we discussed in class on 2\/14, you could format your essay accordingly: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>introduction (introduce the author, the text\/ TEDTalk, the context + include your thesis statement) &#8211; about half a page <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a summary of the text, including the main ideas and examples &#8211; about a page <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your analysis of the text (your thesis statement\/ argument about the text supported by your interpretation of the text) &#8211; about a page and a half<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a conclusion &#8211; could be one or two lines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Submit the final draft on Blackboard by February 23rd. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On &#8220;The Danger of a Single Story&#8221; by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Assignments in many disciplines ask you to analyze texts.
