The Summary of “The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie told her experience of facing culture difference from the book, the stereotype, and her life. She talked about her personal story in her childhood in Nigeria and interesting interaction with roommate in US. Ms. Adichie clarifies the real situation of Africa and the people in Africa. The Danger of a single story is the bias that misconceives one’s culture and truth. It damages the dignity of those people and brainwashes innocent minds. Thus, Ms. Adichie decided to create her own book, with her dream of providing stories to empower people with repaired dignity.
Ms. Adichie mentioned the story could affect cognition. “Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story of that person.” I agree with her agreement which is the main theme of her story. The winner always has the chance to change history. The colonizer can describe the story differently, far from the truth. The story soon could become the “truth” in everyone’s mind. In our daily life, there’s too many fake news and content farm try to manipulate our thoughts. They pretend themself as press and spread panic to careless people. Misleading information can twist the condition of partial things and create bias on them. The story they created won’t just be the danger of dignity, but also the tool of manipulation.
I believe Professor Barnes would want us to realize the importance of the story. The TED TALK speech of Ms. Adichies gave us a reflection of the advantage and damage of a story. The story is not just a sharing of experience or chat, it is a method to express our thoughts, and showing the facts of our culture. I think this reading is a informative experience to have a new concept on Africa and the meaning of story.

Hi, Jason. After I read your summary, I got a very good inspiration, The danger of a single story not only can misleading information but also manipulate people’s thoughts. History always be written by the winner and the winner always covers the damage they caused, they just wish people remember what they did in a positive sight. We need to dialectically think about every piece of history and avoid the danger of a single story.
