For this writing assignment, you will summarize a chapter titled, “Generalized Punishment,” by Michel Foucault (pp. 73-103, found on our class website, here).
In addition to the assigned pages, I have shared a reading guide that helps distill some of the concepts highlighted in the text. This reading is a classic work in the field of criminal justice and at times can be challenging to read and understand. Take your time and do your best!
Instructions:
In your own words, explain the basic concepts and/or argument presented in the chapter, “Generalized Punishment.” Generally, Foucault, a French philosopher and activist, explores why we punished in the past, why we continue to punish today, who has the right to punish, and what “effective” punishment should look like.
Your summary should –
- Identify the main theme and premise of the assigned reading.
- State the major supporting explanations.
- Why does punishment take place?
- Who benefits the most from our structure of punishment?
- Express the underlying meaning of the article, beyond the superficial details.
- Consist of 300 – 500 words; include the word count in your submission.
With this assignment, I want you to first – read and review the assigned material; then, draft a summary in your own words that explains your understanding of this reading and how it relates to a discussion on modern day corrections’ practices.
