Some critics have gone so far as to read this story as the recounting of an actual rape.<\/p>\n<p>A gentler vision of the story views the protagonist as a young\u00a0woman who rejects &#8220;heterosexual institutions in favor of the natural realm of the mother&#8221; (Held).
