{"id":6410,"date":"2025-06-15T23:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/pol-100-a050-american-government-summer-2025\/?p=6410"},"modified":"2025-06-15T22:53:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T22:53:52","slug":"dakota-dickey-module-7-the-different-powers-through-the-us-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/pol-100-a050-american-government-summer-2025\/2025\/06\/15\/dakota-dickey-module-7-the-different-powers-through-the-us-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Dakota Dickey &#8211; Module 7.1 The Different Powers through the US Government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Describe the primary differences in the role of citizens in government, among the federal, confederation, and unitary systems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The roles citizens play in these different forms of governance differs largely.\u00a0 The Federal system, which is\u00a0 characterized as a large central government as well as incorporating regional local and state government.\u00a0 Citizens have the right to vote at most of these levels if not all of these levels.\u00a0 Citizens do follow the government rules in all of the different levels.\u00a0 Citizens can influence policy through different means, in our system, one of the means that carries the most weight is the court system. \u00a0 The confederation system is mainly a power block consisting of independent states rather than a strong central government, whereas the states retain much of the power. \u00a0 Citizens are mainly loyal to the local government ie. I am a Texan not an American.\u00a0 Unitary systems would be characterized as all the power held by the central government, which then can tell the local in-state government what to do.\u00a0 The citizens would vote for their national leaders which would control all the laws and policies from that central government at the National level. \u00a0 I am unaware if local governments would exist in this capacity, but given we are speaking about National organization I would assume there would be small local governments, but all of the power would be controlled by the central government. \u00a0 what I read was that the citizens would have not much government to engage with ie.\u00a0 We vote for local and state governments,\u00a0 but the country as a whole would have more uniform policies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Briefly explain how you understand the system of division of power.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The systems of division of power were enacted by the framers to control the different levels of government power and influence. \u00a0 Given the framers were making a system that was supposed to be different and or adverse to the monarchical system of Europe that they broke away from,\u00a0 they wanted to make sure not one seat of government could take over the others and become a kingdom.\u00a0 A system was designed to play different roles,\u00a0 the federal government would have certain control over federal policies that do have a trickle down effect to the state level, but the governance is different in the two powers.\u00a0 The federal government itself is broken down into multiple parts between enforcement creation, and compliance with laws of the land.\u00a0 I understand the division of power to be a benefit to the country as a whole.\u00a0 There are a lot of people with different views that are a part of the government therefore a policy or law has to be approved by those with different viewpoints, in the hopes that it will benefit all those it applies to, not only the ones who put the lawmakers of a certain party in power.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How does the federal government shape the actions of state and local governments? Write your answer based on doing a bit of research on how the federal government has influenced the actions of NY state and local governments, during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are several ways the federal government shapes the actions of the local and state governments, a few being funding, grants, mandates and regulations, emergency powers and national policy, as well as the highest court in the land is under the federal government&#8217;s purview.\u00a0 Funding and grants have to do with money interests, in one of the readings in this module the US federal government used to give out land grants to states for specific things, now in the modern age &#8211; with all the land already distributed &#8211; the federal powers give out money to sway things in certain ways.\u00a0 Mandates and regulations are a way for the federal government to make \u201crules\u201d or laws that the rest of the country has to follow, normally held with an amount of money to be withheld or fined if the rules are not followed.\u00a0 Some of these rules would have to do with how the federal government wants to see things such as the environment cared for.\u00a0 The emergency powers and national policy would have to do with times of crisis like during the pandemic of 2020, the federal government was able to pass a bill called \u201cThe American Rescue Plan\u201d in which NYC received about $5.3B.\u00a0 This money was to support the healthcare industry, the public transport which had been hurt due to the shelter in place orders, rental assistance, and support schools as well as much more.\u00a0 Some of this money went to testing on a mass amount to collect data to know how the virus was spreading as well as get relief to specific places that needed it. \u00a0 One of the last things in the Supreme Court which is the highest court in the land, which presides over cases that are not able to be fought in lower courts.\u00a0 This is the last line of defence in the legal system.\u00a0 As the supreme court has made decisions that have affected us all from the Civil rights act to Roe V.
