That’s like the divide between the wealthy elite and the poor majority.

Madison says wealth and property come from the “diversity in the faculties of men.” Faculties here mean people’s talents, abilities, or skills. Some people, in his view, naturally have stronger abilities to obtain property, while others don’t. Because of this inequality in abilities, society ends up divided into different classes—those with property and those without.

I don’t agree with that because wealth isn’t just about talent—things like inheritance, opportunity, and discrimination matter too.

The “first object” of government, according to Madison, is to protect property and the unequal abilities to acquire it. That shows how much the framers focused on wealth, which sounds different from how we describe government today.

I’m not surprised Federalist #10 supports a republic instead of democracy. The framers didn’t trust the poor majority to govern directly since that could threaten the property of the rich.

[20

post-11576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-discussion-board-6-2
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/11576
GET
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/posts
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/types/post
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/users/10728
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/comments?post=11576
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/11576/revisions
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/11576/revisions/11577
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/media?parent=11576
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/categories?post=11576
post_tag
https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/pol-100-0508-fall-2025-introduction-to-american-government/wp-json/wp/v2/tags?post=11576
