That’s actually insane when you sit and think about it. One percent of people holding almost half of everything means the system is clearly not balanced. It also said that 90 percent of American families basically have little or no net assets once you subtract debt, which makes it even worse. So most people are out here working, paying bills, and barely building anything for themselves, while a tiny group controls almost everything. That hit me the hardest because it shows this isn’t just a small gap — it’s a massive divide. It makes the idea of “everyone has a fair shot” sound kind of fake.

Living in a society with wealth gaps that big affects everything. It means opportunities aren’t really equal, even if people say they are. If most wealth is at the top, then power is too — power over politics, schools, housing, jobs, all of it. You see it in everyday life when some neighborhoods have better schools, safer streets, and more resources, while others don’t. You see it when people work full-time and still can’t afford rent, but corporations keep reporting record profits. It also shows up in who can take risks, start businesses, or go to college without stressing about debt. When wealth is that uneven, social mobility slows down, and people mostly stay in the class they were born into. That creates frustration, division, and honestly just a lot of pressure on regular people trying to survive.

The statistic that really stood out to me was that the top 1 percent own between 40 and 50 percent of the nation’s total wealth, which is more than the bottom 90 percent combined.
