He believes a fair law matches up with moral values or God’s law, meaning it helps people feel good about themselves, respects their dignity, and treats everyone the same. He says that any law that helps people is a good law because it values human life and helps communities grow. On the other hand, an unfair law makes people feel less important or goes against moral values. This can happen if a law is used differently for different groups or if it was made without asking the people it affects. For instance, segregation laws were unfair because they divided people by race, implying that some races were better than others, which goes against the idea of equality and respect for everyone. MLK also points out that a law can be unfair if a majority group forces it on a minority group while giving themselves special treatment. So, to really judge if a law is fair, we need to think about whether it treats everyone with respect, fairness, and kindness, not just if it’s legal.

It’s really important to know the difference between fair and unfair laws for both people and society. If we don’t see this difference, we might just follow bad laws because they are written down, which can keep unfair systems going. But when people realize that laws should be judged by how they affect morality, not just by being legal, they can become more aware and brave citizens. For example, people like Rosa Parks and whistleblowers like Edward Snowden didn’t break the law just for fun; they did it because they thought some laws were wrong and hurt people’s rights. On a bigger scale, knowing this difference can really change how communities fight for what’s right—many protests happen because people believe the laws are unfair. Politically, understanding this can help lawmakers focus on doing the right thing instead of just holding onto power or tradition. This idea is super important in discussions about things like criminal justice, healthcare, education, and immigration. The Civil Rights Movement, for instance, was based on the belief that many laws in America were unfair and needed to be challenged not just in court, but also in a moral way. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideas give people a way to make sure their government does the right thing and creates laws that respect everyone.

One example of an unfair law in the U.S. today is voter suppression laws, which make it harder for certain groups of people to vote. These laws include things like needing specific types of ID to vote, cutting down on early voting days, and making it harder to vote by mail. While some say these laws are meant to stop cheating, research shows they mostly hurt poor people, people of color, older folks, and students—who often don’t have the right ID or the time to vote. According to Martin Luther King Jr., these laws are unfair because they don’t treat everyone the same, they make it harder for people to take part in democracy, and they take away dignity by silencing some voices. They are also created by those in power, usually from the majority party, to limit the rights of others without facing the same rules themselves.

In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. talks about what makes laws fair or unfair.
